There are several things that you can do to ensure that your child is able to do their best on the upcoming CSAP Test:
- Make sure they are here at school (Make-up times will be available, but students usually do better when taking the tests with their class)
- Make sure your child has plenty of sleep the night before each test
- Provide a good breakfast
- Make sure your child is on time (Students arriving late will not be allowed in the classroom while test is in progress)
- Be positive and encouraging

January 2009
Happy New Year! I am typing this on our first day back from break. It's been fun to see the children again and engaged in their learning. Thank you again for sharing your children with us and I look forward to seeing you at some of our upcoming events. Make plans to attend our popular Retro Night on Friday January 23, 2009! Dig out your leg warmers, polyester, and peace signs. "Retro" in our world means flashing back to the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's. It's a fun family night starting with a meal from Olive Garden. Meal tickets will be available for purchase in a couple of weeks. Then it's on to fun and games! Elvis is scheduled to make another grand appearance to get our feet movin'. With the magnitude of this event, we are in need of volunteers. Please contact the school if you are interested in helping. Another tradition at Gateway is our annual Chinese New Year parade on January 30 at 3:15 p.m. It's a special parade to celebrate the New Year. We will be wearing red and black to school that day. You should have received the School Accountability Report from the Colorado Department of Education. If you did not receive this report and you would like a copy, please contact the office. We are proud of our "High" ranking and I want to take this time to acknowledge our dedicated staff. All of the adults in the building have such a high level of commitment to each child. Thank you, Gateway Staff, for your hard work to ensure success for ALL students! Wishing you all the best in 2009!
With kids in mind and heart, Kay Lynn Waddell Principal

ArK-KIDS HAPPENINGS Wow! What a great job the k-kids did with the Angel Tree. They brought in and wrapped so many neat presents that their chosen angel will love. It was very special to see so many Gateway kids take the time to make Christmas special for someone less fortunate. A big thank you to all the k-kids who helped with this project. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, January 13th at 8:00 a.m. in Mrs. Ellington's room. Our next event will be "Kans for Kauses" on January 17th at the Catholic Church. Come to the meeting and get the details and start saving those cans! Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!

| Music Notes - Mrs Levin |
The Kindergarten classes will be practicing rhythm reading, and learning more about melodies. They will be singing winter songs, including Frosty the Snowman, and learn a song about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The first and second grades will be working hard on the songs for their February program, which will be about people and things they love. The third, fourth and fifth grades will be reviewing note names, rhythm reading and begin their unit on recorders. They will also be singing songs of peace and harmony. They will learn more about the history and culture of African-Americans, including the civil rights movement. The third grade will also study orchestral and folk string instruments, and the fourth will begin a unit on the different types of harmony. Our composer of the month will be Aaron Copland, and we will be learning about "Rodeo" and "Billy the Kid".
