Middle School:
Mr. Alger's Geography Happenings We ended our S.E. Asian studies with an exotic fruit called Durian, smelly but interesting to taste. Sort of like a sweet custard onions and an after taste of petroleum. Yummy!
The kids are getting excited about the 9th Annual Chopstick Competition against Mr. Downing's classes. This will be held in early December. The top 10 in each core will compete against the other cores.

From the Computer of Happy Hands Children's Museum November 19, 2008 We want to thank the community for their support of the recent fund raising efforts conducted for Happy Hands Children's Museum. We had a lot of fun tasting some delicious Tastefully Simple products and checking out all of the many personalized books available from Brighter Learning and the Earth Friendly toys from ImagiPLAY. We are planning on being in the Lighter Side of Christmas Parade in Woodland Park on Sat. Dec. 6. We need to have as many children and their parents take part in this event as we can get. If you would like to take part, please contact us so that we can be sure to include you in this fun event. We are also accepting sponsorships from local business and families. Call or e-mail us for more information. Just a reminder that the National Wildlife Federation will donate 25% of the subscription price of $19.95 to our museum. Go to www.nwf.org/museums and order one or more of their wonderful publications like Ranger Rick, Your Big Backyard or Wild Animal Baby. Enter Special Order Number: PACM5361. They'll handle the rest. It's just that easy. Do your holiday shopping on-line! If you would like to help us in other ways, or make a tax-deductible donation, please feel free to contact us. There are many ways for you to help. We need volunteers and funds, so the opportunities are endless. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call us. Thank you for your support. "Kids for Critters" The upcoming holiday season will provide an excellent opportunity for the Summit Elementary fourth grade students to participate in a service learning project. Through this project the students learn economics, as they become entrepreneurs, in running their own business. The children are immersed in critical thinking activities throughout the entire project with both the economic lessons, the manufacturing of the products, the sale, and the analysis afterwards. "Kids for Critters" was designed and cultivated by Mrs. Miller, fourth grade teacher at Summit. This is the fourth year for this innovative project. The students are designing and creating unique pet-themed products to sell during the Holiday Season. Items include Puppy Pizzas, Bird Wreaths, Doggie French Fries, Kitty Fishing Pole, and Puppy Pillows. As a new feature, this year students will also support a local wildlife rescue shelter. Other profits will be donated to a local "no kill" animal shelter.

Middle School Drama Club Presents....
In November, Drama Club at the Middle School presented two shows, Rumpelstiltskin Private Eye and The Fairy Godmother's Assistant. The shows presented a humorous retelling of two classic fairy tales under the direction of Sara Lee and Ryan Shultz. Acting, stage management, crew, lighting, sound, costumes, props, and publicity were all run by middle school students. The polished performances were a testament to the amazing and varied talents of our students. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the show! For more information, click here for an article and photo slide show from the Courier View.

ACTIVITIES & ATHLETICS Brian Gustafson Greetings, Panther fans! Well, Winter Sports and Activities are in competition mode and the holidays surround us. There is certainly no shortage of entertainment and involvement opportunities within the district at this time of the year. From the elementary schools to the high school, December evenings will fill with the voices and sounds of our extremely talented students as they perform a variety of holiday-related events. Concerts, dances, and Madrigals...oh my! By break we will all be overflowing with holiday cheer. The holiday season also coincides with fierce competition. At WPHS, the Forensics team recently held a home Congress event that was extremely successful. Additionally, Boys' Basketball, Girls' Basketball and Wrestling are all just in the infancy of their competitive schedules but many contests are scheduled before break. The Girls' next home game is December 16th and the Boys' squad will wrap up the pre-break action on December 18th. Before then, however, catch some exciting wrestling action at the 3rd Annual Panther Invite on December 6th or at home matches December 10th and 15th.
Obviously, this is definitely a busy time of the year and I am thankful for the commitment and enthusiasm of our coaches, sponsors and most importantly, participants while they balance commitments to family, friends and academics. Good luck to all of our participants in December. Enjoy a relaxing and safe Winter Break.
If schedule information is ever needed, be sure to go to
www.highschoolsports.net. Happy Holidays from the Panthers!
