Activities Director Brian Gustafson highlights Activities & Athletics
Winter Activities & Athletics are in competition mode and the holidays surround us. There is certainly no shortage of entertainment and involvement opportunities within the district at this time of the year. From the elementary schools to the high school, December evenings will fill with the voices and sounds of our extremely talented students as they perform a variety of holiday-related events. Concerts, dances, and Madrigals! By break we will all be overflowing with holiday cheer.
The holiday season also coincides with fierce competition. At WPHS, the Forensics team recently held a home Congress event that was extremely successful. Additionally, Boy's Basketball, Girls' Basketball, and Wrestling are all just in the infancy of their competitive schedules but many contests are scheduled before break. The Girls' next home game is December 16th and the boys' squad will wrap up the pre-break action on December 18th. Before then, catch some exciting wrestling action at the next home match on December 15th.
Middle School 7th & 8th Boys' Basketball just ended, the 8th grade team finished 5th out of 6 in the Tri County League with a total of 32 boys participating; 7th & 8th Grade Girls' Basketball tryouts began on December 8th with approximately 40 students trying out; Thespian Society, a new club at WPMS, currently has 45 students enrolled; Drama club started with 75 kids during open auditions, and auditions for the winter play will be held next week for The Emperor's New Clothes; Forensics has over 60 students on the team and have been working very hard for their first meet on Saturday, December 13th at Russell Middle School.
In addition to the athletics/activities highlighted above, the middle school students have the opportunity to participate in over 30 different clubs, activities, or teams ranging from book clubs to "School of Rock". The student activities team is currently creating a needs assessment to distribute to students and parents to determine what other activities can be added. The middle school is also trying to discover why some students do not participate in extra-curricular events and form an action plan to get as many students involved as possible.

Ends & 21st Century Committee Update is the
focus of this month's Ends discussion
This month's Ends discussion was on the Ends policies and the 21st Century Committee update.
Assistant Superintendent Linda Murray distributed the indicators, common language by each ends policy, and the model that has been developed. The 21st Century Committee has picked two topics to work on: Critical Thinking/Reasoning and Work Behaviors. The two sub-committees have been meeting to identify the K-12 proficiencies by grade level, and are in the process of setting goals and creating rubrics for each Board Ends policy.
Superintendent Arseneau shared the goal is to bring together 21st Century skills and the Boards' Ends Policies so the district is moving in the same direction.

BOARD DIRECTOR DISTRICT BOUNDARIES
MAY CHANGE
Superintendent Arseneau informed the Board of Education that every four years the district needs to have the director district boundaries by population reviewed as per C.R.S. 22-31-113. The board needs to make a decision if they want to continue to be a director district or become a combined director district with an at-large plan of representation, or a complete at-large district. Mr. Arseneau shared if they decide to keep as is or become a combined director district, we will need to have the boundaries by population reviewed at a cost of approximately $5,000.00. However; if the board decides to become an at-large district the population review does not need to take place, but a plan must be adopted by the board at least 110 days prior to the November 2009 election to be voted upon by the eligible voters in our district.
The board discussed the pros and cons of all the options and decided they would like to survey the communities they represent to get input before making a decision.
***A survey will be available in January or February 2009***

Conversation on Technology in the 21st Century
Superintendent Guy Arseneau shared the Board of Education, Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent Linda Murray, and representatives from the High School STUCO had their annual luncheon. Every year this group gathers to have discussions and the topic for this year was Technology in the 21st Century.
After watching the video "Shift Happens" the group brainstormed ideas on how to implement and imbed technology into daily instruction for students. Some of the comments the students shared: frustrated of being denied access to certain websites even though there is great educational material; and unable to use personal electronic devices due to current policies.
Discussion took place on looking at our current personal electronic devices policies and how we can better serve our students and staff by providing them with the necessary tools for learning.
Board members shared they felt the day was a great success and it was very evident that the students have a passion for learning.
