Time continues to march forward as the leaves have changed and temperatures drop. I hope that each of you have the opportunity to enjoy family and friends during the week of November 24 - 28 as our district is closed to allow students and staff the chance to spend the Thanksgiving week with those important. Let me share with you some things that are coming move forward into the rest of November and into December.
Upon returning from the Thanksgiving Break, we begin three very activity filled weeks before concluding the second semester on December 22nd.
·         PTSO Holiday Shoppe is open from December 9th to December 12th. Please come and see some of the possible shopping options available to our students as they look for gift options for those special to them.  Even better, contact our volunteer coordinator, Kasha Cox, to see if there is any need for volunteers during the Holiday Shoppe's hours;
·         Some annual events, such as the annual visit from the High School Madrigals group and the Middle School band concert are things that add to the enjoyment of the upcoming month;
·         Mid-year assessments in areas of literacy and math for students;
·         We continue to hold brief orientations for those interested in volunteering at Summit Elementary School. The December date for this orientation is Monday, December 15th at 2:00 p.m. in our school cafeteria.
·         Finally, we end the time before the break with a school-wide sing along and parties on Friday, December 18th.
All of these things take place as we conclude the second quarter of the school year and add to make this time of year for our students and staff a busy and active time of the year. As always there are a number of opportunities to work with the wonderful students and staff at Summit Elementary School. We appreciate the effort that everyone provides to make Summit a SUPER place for kids.

From Halloween to Thanksgiving

By Jaydi Starling

We all know that Halloween is over, and I hope all of the Summit Students got A LOT of candy!  But since Halloween is over Thanksgiving is up next.  During Thanksgiving there is no school.  So here are some things to do over the break:

*  You could rake up all the leaves and JUMP in them!
*  It would be nice to help Mom with the turkey!
*  Make a pie.
*  Play baseball outside.
*  Invite a friend over (with Mom and Dad's permission of course.)
*  Write a story with an illustration.
*  Watch a movie.
*  Just go outside and play in the trees.
*  Just sit down and talk to your family!
Thanksgiving can be really fun!  You just have to make it even better!

Principal's Reading Challenge Results

By Lauren Mitchell

The principal's challenge has come to an end and, unfortunately, the students did not read enough minutes for Captain Summit to come and rescue Mr. Owen.  However, the challenge provided plenty of activities for additional reading.  We had "Read the Day Away", and the whole school was "tucked in" with books.  PJ's, pillows, blankets, and all of our furry little friends were there and made the day a success!  On October 24th the Community Readers made it an enjoyable morning for all, as they read to the students in each classroom.  Halloween became "Super Hero Day" as students were allowed to dress up as their favorite super hero (Batman, Batwoman, Iron Man,etc.).  Even though we did not reach our reading goal of 250,000 minutes, we did spend a lot of extra time reading.

Community Readers

Why is reading so important?  Students at Summit Elementary found out the answer to that question, when several community readers volunteered their time to read to all of the Summit Classrooms.  On Friday, October 24, several readers came in to share the ways in which reading has helped them in their lives.  Students were able to ask questions, share stories, and sit back and relax with a great book!

Battle of the Books
By Lauren Mitchell

"Battle of the Books" has started again!  I have had the great opportunity to be in this wonderful program. Mrs. Frick, our enrichment teacher, heads up this exciting program. Throughout the year, the participants get to choose a great book to read from a list of thirty classics.  For example, one of the books I read this year is , The Cricket in Times Square.  A fun assignment is making quilt squares that represent the various books.  The squares are put together in a large quilt and displayed by our meeting area, next to the kindergarten rooms.  My first quilt piece has characteristics that define the main character.  I discovered that Chester the cricket was a shy, talented singer from Connecticut.  Through the music of his wings, he actually saved a newsstand from going out of business.

At the end of the year, fourth and fifth graders participate in a district "Battle of the Books" competition.  We sit with our team and when our team is called, we go up to a table where there are buzzers.  We have to choose between topics and have to try and answer questions before the other teams; then you have to answer the book that goes with the questions.  The first group to buzz in will get to say their answer and be able to earn points for the school.  This is a wonderful way to enjoy reading!

Colorado History Comes Alive in Fourth Grade!
By Jonathan Schmidt

The sound of drums greeted us when we entered Mrs. Miller's Classroom.  As we followed the chants of Native American rhythms, it led to a roomful of authentic activities that represent the Plains Indian Culture.  We were greeted by "Mother Wolf,"  Kodi Lowell's mother, who was dressed in a traditional leather outfit.  We got to go to three different stations.  The first station I got to go to was the culture group.  "Mother Wolf" told us about the Plains Indian Culture.  She is from the Lakota Tribe.  They have a ring that is four different colors.  1.red 2. blue 3. green 4. yellow.  The second group was the cooking group.  We got to make corn cakes out of cornmeal and water.  Mrs. Lowell also made us fry bread with a special Native American pudding.  At station three, we made necklaces with different colored beads.  We followed a pattern and connected the bead on a string called sinew.  We also used a fake bear claw.  After we made the necklace, we each took our necklaces home.  After visiting all the stations, we gathered together for the Sun Dance.  It was exciting because the leader led us into a spiral coil of people as we danced to the rhythm of Indian drums.  At the end of the day, I realized that each of us are special in different ways.  The Native American Culture has given a lot to our country.  They were also important in the history of our state, Colorado.

Fifth Graders Scale Pikes Peak!
By Kelsey Moore and Caitlan Thorne

.Pikes Peak!  Pikes Peak!  We are going to talk about the fifth grade trip up to the summit of Pikes Peak.  Before we got on the train, we got onto a bus headed for the Pikes Peak Railway.  When we go to the Pikes Peak Railway, we used the restroom (very important) and waited for the cog train to arrive.  Then we got onto the train, and did some work in a study packet, based on Pikes Peak.  We took the train up to the summit of Pikes Peak, the engineer, or conductor, told us many different facts about people who went to Pikes Peak, and some facts and history about the actual Pikes Peak Railway trip.  We discovered that there is a "windy point", which is the halfway point.  In a house along the railway route, a woman had two babies. The only people that lived there was her, her husband, and her two children.  We also discovered that man built a log cabin, a bowling alley and a diner.  Did you know that Pikes Peak was made out of pink granite?  Did you know that a rock form is a called a rock formation and that some were shaped like diamonds, syrup bottles, and Santa's Sleigh?  We finished off our trip up Pikes Peak with some delicious hot chocolate, and some "not so delicious" donuts.  Now, didn't you learn a lot about Pikes Peak today?  Yeah!!.

Julie of the Wolves:

A Book Review By Rebecca Mijares

I recently finished the book, Julie of the Wolves, by Jean Craighead George.  It is about a girl who ran away.  She is starving and hoping for something to help her.  Soon she sees some wolves and recalls her father telling her that the wolves helped him and brought him food.  Julie attempts this technique.  Will it work or will Julie have to hunt on her own?  If you want to find out what happens, I'll tell you a secret...read the book!

Maniac Magee: By Halen Padilla

Maniac Magee, the book, won the Newberry Award, and hey I don't blame them, it is a great book!  Mania Magee's real name is Jeffery Lone Magee.  Jeffrey's parents died in a trolley crash.  So he has to go and live with his aunt and uncle.  He put up with that for 8 long years.  After those long years, he ran away.  He meets lots of new people on the way.  Jeffrey did the impossible, like punted an impossible punt, and the rest...well, read the book and you'll find out!

What is Mr. Lang Up to Now?!
 By Joseph Busby

Okay, here's the scoop...you have heard how Mr. Lang is a little weird, right?!  How he races kids at recess and shaves his head to motivate kids to do well on CSAP?!  Good, because here is more information about Mr. Lang.  He is teaching some of his students to play guitar in his classroom.  The students love to learn more about the guitar, and as for Mr. Lang...well you just never know what is next!

The Weather in Divide
By Chris Helland and Trent Foky

The weather has been a little cold lately, in Divide.  Here are some of the averages for November weather:
--Average high is around 46 F
--Average low is around 12 F
--Average precipitation is around .61 inches

Here are some signals for weather:
*  Weather Watch means bad weather is possible.
* Weather Warning means that bad weather is occurring.

Here are some weather tips for driving in the snow:
*  Bridges and overpasses usually freeze first, so always slow down and avoid doing sharp turns, this can cause crashes.
*  If windows get covered--clear them.
*  Keep your speed steady and slow, but do not go too slow or else your car could get stuck in deep snow.
*  Use your brakes cautiously.
*  If you get stuck in the snow keep a steady pace.  If the wheels are just turning, stop them and use sand or cinders for traction.

Be careful and drive safe!

Jokes and Fun!
  By Kelsey Moore

*  Hey, what did the phone say to the banana?..."Yellow!"
*  What do you get when you put chocolate and milk together?..."Chocolate milk!"

Here is a funny song about chocolate milk:

Give me a long M....MMMMMMMMM... Give me a short M...M...Don't give me no pop, don't give me not tea, just give me my moo, moo, moocow chocolate milk!  MOOOOO!
(Repeat with each of the letters in the word milk.)

The Bucs
By Matt Cox

With the Bucs winning five games in a row, and their win over Kansas City, they now go to 6-3.  Their next opponents are the Minnesota Vikings.  If they win this game, they will be 7-3, an all time record.  If they win their next four games they will definitely be going to the playoffs.  If they can survive the playoffs they will be in the Superbowl!  LET'S GO BUCCANEERS, LET'S GO!

BIG D IS NOT BIG ANYMORE!
By Joey Ereon

Dallas is falling to the bottom of the NFC East, one game ahead of the Eagles and two games behind the Redskins.  After they had two devastating losses to the Rams and the Cardinals, not to mention the New York Giants.  But this week is their by and Romo is in practice and is going to play against the Redskins.  He gave his emotional speech to the press, crying, "That is my team."  The question is... will the Cowboys win?

Harry Caray
By Zak Hess

Harry Caray is the Cubs' announcer.  Fans love him for his comedic and always happy attitude.  Sadly, Harry Caray is now gone, but fortunately a large golden statue was placed outside of Wrigley Field, in honor of this great man.  Now fans will remember Harry Caray forever!

Rockies
By Trent Foky and Sage Overmyer

The Rockies needed to win the September 18th game, which they were able to do, when Helton hit a two-run homer.  The final score was 9-8! The game was played against the Diamondbacks.  The Diamondbacks have been having a great year so far, but we are glad that the Rockies won.  Last year, the Rockies never lost a game until The World Series!  They had a terrible defeat against the Red Sox.  The Rockies lost all 4 games during the series.  Find out more in our next issue.

Hyabusa
Motorcycles

By Tyler Keefer

Motorcycles are very fast and they are also used in a lot of sports, like motocross and ice racing.  Motorcycle racing is a pretty scary sport because you are racing around  a racecar track, but with motorcycles speeding at 182 mph.  They have to be very careful because they are taking corners at 100 mph.  The riders have to wear metal pads, so when they are driving, and come upon a corner they can put their leg on the track and slide across.  You have to control your motorcycle because you can lose control.  It is a very dangerous sport and you have to be very brave to do this sport because there are A LOT of crashes!  My dad owns a very cool motorcycle too, it is a 2008 Suzuki Hyabusa, named after the Peregrine Falcon, one of the fastest birds.  It can fly 180 mph, like the motorcycle.  I think it is very cool to have one because they are awesome!  It can actually go over 200 mph without the governor.  Now that's soaring!

Empty Bowls Night

Empty Bowls Night for 2008 will be held at the Ute Pass Cultural Center, 210 E. Midland Ave., in Woodland Park, on Thursday, November 20.  It will begin at 5:00 and finish at 8:00 P.M.
Many Summit students have participated in this year's event.  Fourth graders have made "bowls", which resemble candy dishes, to donate.  They learned to use clay stamps and some clay tools in making these pieces.  They will be making an additional bowl to take home.  They will be able to use an original stamp, which they designed and created, for decorating their own bowl.  Fifth graders made the posters advertising the event.  They used the portable, wireless computer lab in Art class to type and arrange the words.  They used papers which they painted to punch out shapes to make borders to decorate the posters.  These posters will be up all around the Woodland Park and Divide area to provide information about the event.  Other students in the WP School District have also made bowls to donate.
Empty Bowls Night was begun in 1990 in Detroit, Michigan.  It has grown into an international event, raising money for food banks and other charitable organizations throughout the world.  To learn more about it, go online to emptybowls.net.
Our local event benefits the Community Cupboard.  Local restaurants provide the soup, free of charge, to help this worthwhile organization provide food to area residents in need.  Make time to go to Empty Bowls Night and choose a handmade bowl.  A bowl of soup with bread is available for a donation of $3, soup and bread with a handmade bowl for a $10 donation.

Music Notes-By Miss Baker

NOVEMBER
   I don't know about you, but I'm ready to "gobble 'til I wobble." I've worked up an appetite after all the fun things happening in music class this month.
     Kindergarten and first graders are learning about opposites in music: fast and slow, loud and soft and high and low.   They learned about their first composer, JS Bach (loved the wig, too).  Also, we have been focusing on the beat.
    Second graders are singing patriotic songs and learning about the symbols of America.  I have challenged them to learn "The Star-Spangled Banner" by heart.
     I hope you can join us this month as third grade presents "Education Rocks!" It will be a fun evening of music.
    Fourth graders have had guest musicians in the music room to teach them about the instruments of the orchestra. Special thanks to the Mijares family and Mr. Ken White for coming and sharing their talents
  Fifth graders have begun working on their upcoming holiday concert entitled, "A Song of Peace."
   I hope that your family enjoys a wonderful time of Thanksgiving together this month.  I am grateful for such great students.
----Miss Baker

"Education ROCKS"

                 Ever wish you had spidey sense or could leap tall buildings in a single bound? With the help of the Mighty Minds, third graders will convince audience members that we all have the power to change the world....through education!
      Third graders will proudly present a musical concert at 7:00 p.m. on November 20, 2008.    Please join us for a wonderful evening.
       Parents, we're going to "rock out" in our costumes for the show.  The six mighty minds costumes will be provided.  If you have any questions, concerns or costume needs, please let me know.
     This is the same night as the "Empty Bowls" event at the Ute Pass Cultural Center in Woodland Park from 5-8 p.m.  Fourth graders have made some of the bowls that will be for sale that night, and fifth graders have designed flyers to promote the event.  I would encourage you to enjoy a bowl of soup and then head out to the Summit gym for a concert.

See you there!
We'll see you at the show!

2008 Sounds of the Season Holiday Home Tour Performers Needed

Musicians Wanted!
On Saturday December 6 and
Sunday, December 7 there
will be live music in each
venue during the holiday home
 tour.  It's a small, friendly
audience, and Miss Baker has applications in the music room.  Please consider being part of this event in our community.

A Song of Peace
     The fifth graders are hard at work preparing their music concert entitled, "A Song of Peace" about our winter wishes and holiday hopes for a better world.   The show will be Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.
     The concert will feature songs for peace like "A Candle for Peace," "Let There Be Peace on Earth," "Winter Fantasy" and "No School Tomorrow if it Snows."
   With the help of their classroom teachers, the students will be sharing peace poems, winter wishes and holiday hopes for a better world.
   Parents, we are going to wear blue and white and silver for the beauty of the winter.  If you have any questions, or would like to help out with the show, please let me know.

*  Were you thinking about donating your child's outgrown Halloween costume to Goodwill? Why not drop it off for the music department and the many shows we do throughout the year?  Your generosity is appreciated!

*  On December 6, 2008 the Summit Singers will be singing in the "Lighter side of Christmas" holiday parade and helping the mayor light the Christmas tree at the Ute Pass Cultural Center where they will also sing immediately following the parade.  Come and join us for some music and fun in our community.  The parade starts at 6:30 p.m.
   Holiday Ringers and Summit Singers will provide the prelude to the 5th graders concert on December 11, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.  They have been rehearsing very hard and are excited to share the music they have learned.
   The fifth graders from Summit Singers will provide the lunchtime entertainment for the Senior Citizen Christmas Dinner on December 19th and we will also play at the beginning of the All-school holiday sing-along that day at 2:00 p.m.

I need an accompanist for Wednesday morning rehearsal, (8:00-8:40 a.m.) and all Summit Singers performances. If you'd like to apply, or know of someone who would be great for the job, please contact me. There is a small salary for this accompanist position.

*     Is your child interested in taking private piano, guitar, voice, or woodwinds lessons?
      I have a list of names and phone numbers for several private music teachers in the area and I would be glad to send a copy home with your child.

Concert!

   Fourth graders had a wonderful time at the Colorado Springs Philharmonic Young People's Concert on November 6, 2008, at 11:00 a.m., thanks to the generosity of Mr. Arseneau who paid for our bus and Mr. Owen, who sponsored the children's tickets through funds from Summit Elementary.  After our trip to the orchestra, we went to the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum.
