Be Sugar Smart!

We are increasingly aware of the negative impact of sugar on the behavior, learning, and overall health of our students. Due to this, the only beverages and snacks sold during school hours will be sugar-smart. In addition, energy drinks will be confiscated from students. Please help us by NOT sending soda or candy to school with your child. When sending food and beverages for classroom parties, please select sugar-smart items.

| Dear Parents,
Thank you for your outstanding participation in Parent/Teacher Conferences this fall. We had an amazing turnout with most teams filling all their available slots. A high percentage of parents arrived with their child's report card or knew what their child's grades were as a result of using Infinite Campus. Please continue to use this system to keep track of your student's grades and assignments.
The level of involvement in your students' lives is encouraging and the support that you are providing as parents is evident. We would ask that you take one more step and become involved in our Caring and Active Parents group (CAP). CAP helps in many areas such as providing food for events, chaperoning dances and field trips, helping with Eighth Grade Recognition, volunteering to assist with academics, and serving on various committees and teams. Success in school is directly tied to the level of parent involvement. When many parents are involved schools run more smoothly, students feel supported, and the overall capacity of the school to educate children is increased. Our CAP group is currently in need of volunteers. They offer a number of opportunities that may fit your schedule and do not require a long term commitment. I believe you will find your involvement very rewarding to you and your child. To obtain more information please call Mrs. Cassens at 686-2200 or email her directly at tcassens@wpsdk12.org.
Thank you, John Jamison Principal Woodland Park Middle School

Student Council Our Student Council has been very busy this year so far. We entered a float that the students and Mrs. Vogt and Mrs. Rucker decorated in the homecoming parade at the end of September. The Dance Committee and Mrs. Gonzales also helped CAP with their first dance of the year and the Halloween dance.
STUCO's recycling committee and Builder's Club have gotten the middle school on the road to "going green". Mr. Kettler and his committee are extremely diligent about making sure that our staff and students are recycling plastics and aluminum, as well as making our classrooms "green" by cutting down the amount of light-power we use and recycling unwanted papers.
The Wellness Committee (WELCO), sponsored by Mrs. Carnahan, has been working on activities to keep our students active and healthy by sponsoring a Wii contest during dances, future taste tests of healthy foods during lunches, and helping promote walk-to-school/walk-at-school activities. The School Community Committee and their sponsor Mrs. Reiter are working on activities for the Red Ribbon Week and also where they might be able to volunteer their time and energy to help improve our community.
The Teacher Appreciation committee has been working with our administration to show our staff that their "day in the sun" is celebrated by students. The Pep Rally Committee and Ms. Lee are keeping secret plans for first of two Panther Roar Rallies. And as always, our Student Store, manned by our STUCO Store Managers, are keeping our students healthy and happy by offering sugar-smart goodies for sale after school.

The 8th grade girls volleyball team ended their fall season on an exciting high note! The girls traveled to Cheyenne Mountain for their league tournament. In the first round, WP played Skyview. Hannah Sauer gave the team a lead with several hard and non-returnable serves. This gave the team the momentum to beat Skyview in 2 matches!
With Skyview under their belt, the girls advanced to the next round in the tournament. Their next opponent was the number one seed Cheyenne Mountain. Again, the girls led off with tough serves and great defense. The girls took the lead early on and gave Cheyenne Mountain a run for their money. They were unable to hold on. They lost the first match 23-25. In the second match, WP was able to shut down Cheyenne Mountains toughest hitter and server. Elin Saxon played awesome defense at the net with several great blocks. The game went back and forth, but WP lost 21-25. Cheyenne Mountain was taken by surprise and earned their first place finish.
This was a great end to a fun season. The girls improved every game and have a bright high school career ahead of them. Thank you to all of our parents and fans for their support. Back to Top |
Cross Country
The boys and girls Cross Country teams did well throughout the season. The girls team remained competitive all season long with most meet finishes in the top four. The boys team continued to improve throughout the season and finished strong with a couple third and fourth place finishes. The team's best meet was at Buena Vista where both boy's and girl's came home with 2nd place team finishes. The team's top runners were Tyler Obernesser, Bobby Slaughter, Kelsey Seibel, Grace Hopkins, Kayla Ibarra, Brianna Austin, Anne Fisher, Brittany Cooper, and Jessica Marshall. Thanks to all the parents and supporters who traveled during the season to cheer us on. Photo taken by Robert Marshall at Buena Vista Meet.

2008 Football News from Coach Alger This year proved to be very exciting. Our teams were tough, played hard and had a lot of heart. With a new coaching staff, this season has been a transition year. However, we have been able to include more players because of the B games on Thursdays at the middle school for the 7th graders. For the 8th graders we started videotaping our games like the high school programs do in order to get better ideas for future improvement . This tool turned out to be an eye opener for the players. The 8th grade team had the smallest turn out in ten years with 21 players. Let's get the word out and recruit more players next year! The recipients for the outstanding 7th grade defensive and offensive player awards were Weston Shutts and Logan Watters respectively. And the outstanding 8th grade defensive and offensive players were Kris Smith and Riley Feland respectively. Congratulations players.

News from the All Stars
The first quarter for the All Star team has been a fantastic learning experience for our students. They rose to the challenge and showed us what they could do. Our bowling trip to Bear Creek Lanes was a fun way to reward the students for their efforts. For the second quarter, students will be covering more information and building on what was learned in the first quarter. In Science, students are working on lesson plans they will be using to teach information on nutrition, the building blocks of the human body. In Language Arts, students are working on learning what makes a good short story, starting with correct paragraph construction. Mrs. Walker is quite pleased with the students' efforts on writing their paragraphs. Perimeter and area are the topics of the current unit in Math. Finally, in Social Studies the students are learning how America became the independent country we are now through the Revolutionary War between Great Britain and the American Colonies.
