   Academic Achievement is the focus of this month's

Ends discussion

This month's Ends discussion was on E-2 (Board End's Policy #2) Academic Achievement.  Assistant Superintendent Linda Murray presented the district's CSAP, ACT, AYP, and Technology Assessment results for 2008.  Mrs. Murray shared how we can improve student achievement and the things to keep in mind when looking at the results.  Mrs. Murray demonstrated the new state model on longitudinal growth.

POTENTIAL REORGANIZATION OF BUS STOPS

Over the past three years district fuel costs have increased 39% ($45,414) and transportation costs for district routes have increased 16.5% ($147,072).

Due to these rising costs the School Board of Education, District Administration, and Durham School Services are reviewing current bus stops and the possibility of changing the current bus pick-up and drop-off locations.

Informational meetings have been scheduled to gather your input and work towards possible solutions to continued rising transportation costs.

Catamount Mountain School (School in the Woods) is on schedule to begin in the Fall of 2009...

Superintendent Arseneau updated the board that we are continuing to move forward with the Catamount Mountain School.  The plan is to have a teacher selected by the end of this semester so preparations for opening the school can be completed for Fall of 2009.

Woodland Park School District and the Catamount Institute will open a school that focuses on science and the environment with hands-on experiences in the outdoors.  The Catamount Institute, which owns the 177 acres, is a nonprofit organization that promotes "ecological stewardship."  22 fourth grade students will be chosen each year to attend the Catamount Mountain school.

We are anticipating a large interest in this program and registration and application information will be shared as soon as it becomes available.

Declining Enrollment Continues to Negatively
Impact School Budget

Woodland Park School District enrollment numbers are down again this year.  This is a nine year pattern that is negatively impacting our general fund budget.    General fund budget is funded by our October 1 student enrollment count.  Our per pupil funding for 2008-2009 is approximately $6500 per student.  This year's student count is anticipated to be 110 students below last year's count.

     Only GED Testing Site in Teller County comes to Woodland Park

Woodland Park School District Re-2 was approved on August 27th as an official GED testing site.  We are the only GED testing site in Teller County.  The testing will occur on the fourth Tuesday and Thursday of the month and the test will be administered in our Alternative Education facility.

If you or someone you know wants to get their GED, please contact Community Partnership at 686-0705.

SCHOOL BOARD REVIEWS AMENDMENT 59 (SAFE) FOR RESOLUTION CONSIDERATION IN OCTOBER

What is Amendment 59?
Amendment 59 - SAFE (Savings Account For Education) - is a ballot initiative to create a savings account for public education. SAFE dedicates a permanent source of funding to public education, preserves the right of citizens to vote on taxes, and untangles the fiscal knot in Colorado's constitution.

What does SAFE do?
  • Invests future surpluses in the State Education Fund.
  • Creates a long-term savings account for education.
  • Sunsets the constitutional requirement to increase P-12 spending.

What does SAFE mean for kids?
  • Dedicates a permanent source of funding to preschool-12th grade education.
  • Enables the state to protect public schools from cuts during economic downturns.

What does SAFE mean for taxpayers?
  • Does not increase tax rates.
  • Preserves the constitutional right to vote on taxes.
  • Preserves the constitutional requirement to balance the budget.
  • Prevents the state government from growing beyond its means; triples state reserves.

How can the State Education Fund be used?
The State Education Fund can be used only for public education, from preschool through the 12th grade. Specific purposes include:
  • class-size reduction;
  • gifted and talented programs;
  • performance incentives for teachers;
  • preschool and kindergarten;
  • school-building construction;
  • special education;
  • student safety;
  • technology education;
  • and vocational education.
