Christopher HRUSHOWY
_____________________________________________ HRUSHOWY, Christopher - Of Toronto, Ontario, passed away on the 18th of September, 2012. Husband of Suzie Gibbs, father of Jeanne Rodeck, Laurie Bickle, and Neil Hrushowy, and grandfather of Kelly, Gregory, Tracey, Ian, Aidan and Anders. Chris died peacefully after a long struggle with ALS. Born in Brandon, MB, Chris travelled the world with family and on business, and savoured the opportunity to learn from wherever he went. A renowned storyteller, Chris lived life most fully through the spoken word, and he always appreciated the value of a tall tale. But no story was complete until he brought it back to the importance of family, the theme around which he built his life. He will be missed for his warmth, humour and steadfast resolve. There will be a private memorial for family and close friends, according to Chris's wishes. No flowers, please. Donations may be made to No Strings Theatre for Youth. Now the real fun begins!
- from Sue Hamilton, Work Party Co-ordinator
____________________________________________________
What a fantastic summer of long hot sunny days! Recently though, the days have cooled off and there is a chill in the air. I keep thinking that this should be reminding me of something...but what? Ah yes, I have it. Work parties!! Yes summer fun is over (sorry), but now the real fun begins. We'll start by easing back it into it with a few requests.
This Saturday Bruce Morrison (lead for the railyard) is requesting help with the ways in preparation for haulout (see his item elsewhere is S2S), and Joe Simpson is in need of welding service for the work raft to get the chain replacement project ready for post-launch. Please come out and lend a hand if you are able.
A week from Saturday (Oct 6), Ann Kay has some planting to do around the gardens. We need to get those plants in the ground before we have a frost. Hole diggers and planters are requested to come out around 9:00 am or so.
Now, for something we can all look forward to..(imagine a drum roll here).... the all day work party (9-4) is scheduled to take place Saturday Nov 3. I will be putting together a list of jobs and asking for people to send an email to abycworkparty@hotmail.com to sign up for the dream job of their choice.
Cheers.

The last Wednesday
to max out your 3Q Minimum!
This Wednesday, September 26th, is the last of the Wednesday Night Social Evenings for you to use up those unspent dollars in your third quarter Minimum Billing Account.
Come on down to the Club to use up the remainder and to recount and recollect one of the best summers these ancient eyes have ever experienced and to toast to the weather gods for more of the same to come.
If you feel challenged to absorb all that remains in your Minimum Billing Account, there will be members available to assist you in depleting the amount outstanding.

 Rail Yard notice for 2012
- from Bruce Morrison, Rail Yard Chair
____________________________________________________
First I'd like to say that the rail yard is an important feature of ABYC. One reason is the cost per boat for a boat that is stored in the rail yard is significantly less than the cost per boat for a boat that is stored in the crane yard. Because about a third of the club fleet is stored in the rail yard, it provides a cost avoidance to the overall club expenses. Secondly, those members that participate in pulling on the ropes have an opportunity to meet other members that they otherwise may not have met throughout the past season, and they can share stories and experiences and make new friends.
Now on to the tasks at hand: Starting this weekend Sept 29, I need a team of 10 people to move and rebuild way 7 in the east yard so that it can accommodate larger boats and add a storage location for the emergency cradle. The weekend of Oct 13, I need a team of 10 people to setup ways 2, 4, 12 and 14 in the west yard. Please bring your own hammer and cordless drill.
Finally, I have completed the inspections of the wooden cradles. A number need repairs before they are fit for use. In general everyone should inspect their own cradle to ensure the bolts are tight and it is in top condition for the coming storage season. Also, please look at your cradle and make sure it is properly marked with your member number and boat name. If there are inaccurate markings on the cradle please paint over them.

A perfect ending to a busy cruising season.
Liz Heron (Bugle Boy), and Michelle Gryguc Wolfson and Julius Gryguc (Madness) - AKA the Sultan and his ladies - served up a fabulous feast of Lamb Kebabs, Spanakopita, Couscous and a variety of desserts.
The assembled cruisers were entertained by some magnificent Belly Dancing by the very talented Fatina (Liz) and Amira (Joanne Graziano). Fatina and Amira also had the crowd up warding off the chill of the evening by shaking some mighty fine booty of their own.
Thanks to all who attended and a special thanks to our hosts for putting together such a fun and original evening.

Birthday Wishes to Members
The birthdays of Club Members and Spouses seem to go by so quickly and we often don't hear of them until they are long past. To compensate, a Monthly Birthday Club will be held on the last Wednesday of each month for the next three months. Chef Paul will offer a birthday dessert to anyone with proof of a birthday occurring at anytime within the month. There is, of course, always the possibility that fellow members at the bar will add to the rewards if only in voice.

Final Crane Haulout Information
- from Anthony Mirvish, Crane Committee Chair
__________________________________________________________________
CRADLE LAYOUT & YARD MARKING
The yard will be marked with cradle and other haulout locations on Saturday October 6 starting at approximately 8:30 AM. The marking of the cradle locations will be complete by approximately noon. Vehicles are not permitted in the main parking lot or the lower parking area behind Blue dock, and the yard will be closed to prevent access while the markings are being placed. Club members are requested to remove their vehicles Friday night. For those unfamiliar with the process, the marks for the cradle locations in the main yard consist of either spray-painted bulls eye targets and letters, or spikes with steel washers and pink ribbons. The steel washers have letters on them that correspond to particular boats. The spikes are driven flush with the ground to prevent damage to car tires; please do not remove them. Markings along Blue Wall, in the Drysail Area and the Coatsworth Cut consist of spray-painted letters and hash marks that correspond to the cradle center lines. Additionally, the rail area will be marked with spray-painted lines and short wood stakes to denote the limits of the crane boat storage area. These marks are very important as we must not place the boats too close to the ways used by the railways. The cradles for boats being hauled by crane will be laid out on Thursday, October 11. The cradles will be laid out starting at 9:00 a.m.. Based on previous years' experience, the layout will be finished before 5:00 p.m.. While the cradles are being laid out, no vehicles will be admitted to the club. All vehicles must be removed from the parking lots by 8:30 AM on the 11th. Vehicles remaining on the grounds may be towed. CRANE YARD HAULOUT DIAGRAM
The crane haul plan is now complete. I will post a copy of the yard haulout diagram in the window of the Club Office by this weekend. Boats that will be hauled on Friday will be circled. Do not assume that your boat is in the same location as it was last year: We have many new boats in the fleet and the yard layout and haul order have been revised to accommodate them, with many other boats moving as a consequence. Yard location is a function of displacement, draft, beam, crane capacity and overall logistics. BOATS HAULED BY CRANE AND MOVED BY HYDRAULIC TRAILER
There are 20 boats being hauled with the hydraulic trailer this year. All will be hauled on Friday, October 19 and all but one will be stored in the rail area. Boats being hauled using the hydraulic trailer require blocking under their cradles to allow the trailer to slide under it and pick the cradle and boat up together. Blocks should be 6 x 6 timber and a minimum of 6 (six) per cradle are recommended. In addition, those boats whose yard position is close to the railway will be on sloping ground, so 1x2, 1x4 and 2x4 leveling wood and shims are strongly recommended. The club has a supply of 6x6 blocks from last year and we will be cutting up Way 10 to make more. However, owners are strongly encouraged to provide a supply for their own use. Some cradles currently have steel "feet" made from I or square HSS shapes welded to them. These serve the same purpose as blocks so if your cradle has 6 feet, you won't need wood blocks. The boats that will be hauled by crane and moved by hydraulic trailer are as follows: Mermaid II
Mr. Turtle
Jabiru
Gentle Dreams
Time Bandit
Fantasy
Isogon
Mischief
Zephyr
Tasty Waves
Annie's Fantasea
Fat Cat
Blue Buccaneer
Wild Rice
Day Dream II
Laime II
Play D'Eau
Snowstorm
Penny Cress II
Feisty Lady
Moomba III
Leveling wood is strongly recommended for Time Bandit, Fantasy, Isogon, Mischief, Zephyr, Tasty Waves, Annie's Fantasea, Fat Cat, Blue Buccaneer, Wild Rice and Day Dream II. If you have any questions about the requirements for this area, please contact me. HAULOUT SCHEDULE
Haulout will start at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, October 19 for both the large and small cranes. This will allow us to integrate the 20 boats being hauled by the hydraulic trailer into the overall plan and coordinate them with the crane moves. It should mean a shorter Saturday. The start time for the large crane is thus earlier than last year. In addition, the small crane will start on Blue Wall rather than in the Drysail area, unlike past years. VOLUNTEERS FOR CRADLE LAYOUT
Volunteers are requested for the cradle layout on October 11. The club will provide lunch and all time counts towards club work hours. Although the layout will take most of the day, please feel free to come out even if you can only participate for half the day: it is a fairly physical activity and the more help, the better. SLING MARKS
Please mark the lifting points for your boat either on the toe-rail or on the side of the hull immediately below it. This is where the crews will position the slings prior to lifting your boat. Small ABYC stickers are available for this purpose from the club office. If you are unsure as to where the marks should go, please feel free to contact me and I will help you. Proper identification of the lifting points for your boat will prevent damage to through-hull fittings, shafts, and propellers. Although the dock crews are very experienced and knowledgeable, and the owners will be asked to okay the lifting points at haulout, the ultimate responsibility lies with you, the owner. Your cooperation is appreciated. QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS If you have any questions about the crane haulout, please feel free to contact me directly.
