Nominating Committee
By: Bruce Hannah, Chair
Jim Allen
Petra Fischer
As we draw closer to the election of new board members, we would like to remind you that you are highly encouraged to run for one of the 3 positions that will be voted on later this month. Many of us have opinions as to how our club is and should be managed and now is the time for you to put those opinions on the table by running for a board position this Fall.
Jim would really like to talk to you about the role of Vice Commodore Marine:
The Vice Commodore Marine, is responsible for: the Harbour Master, the Yard Master, Launch and Haul-out and both the harbour and the docks. Jim can be reached at: (416) 227-3385 or allenassociates@sympatico.ca
Petra would like to discuss with you the role of Rear Commodore:
The Rear Commodore shall be responsible for all sailing activities in the Club; Cruising, Racing, Race Management, as well as ABYC's fleet of boats. Petra can be reached at: (416)-427-5599 or petra.fischer@cbggroup.com
Bruce would like to talk to you about the Vice Commodore Finance. In this role, there is the opportunity to have a partner supporting you. We believe that the task, which may sound daunting, would benefit from a team approach whereby the tasks and processes can be delegated to a team member. Bruce can be reached at (416) 253-0015 or at bruce.w.hannah@gmail.com
You may talk to any of us about these roles and you are highly encouraged to do so.

 Work Party Breakfast
- from Bob Hedley, VC-Marine
________________________________________________________
This is the last call for anyone who worked on the Dock Project and other yard and harbour projects this year to join me for breakfast at the club this Saturday morning from 08:00-09:30. We want to celebrate our club's great working tradition. Please RSVP Bob Hedley ( roberthedley@rogers.com ) so that we will be sure to have enough food and coffee on hand.
Preparing for Haulout
Also, we are a month away from Haulout and the recommencement of Saturday work parties. However as many of you know, the work required to maintain our club property and harbour actually goes on all year. During the summer our Bosuns pick up the daily chores and even do some 'fixin' of their own. I have received some very positive feedback from guests and members about their efforts to accommodate visiting sailors. I also know that many of the team leaders, coordinators and committee chairs just keep on finding work to do. For example; Anthony Mirvish and Bruce Morrison have been holding meetings and planning the fall Haulout, Gerald Rubenovitch is getting the club's first Environment audit together.
You can do your part to keep our club a safe and tidy place. Please read and follow our fall Haulout Preparations guide which will be published very soon. In particular we can do better following our Mast Crane rules for safe operation and storage. If this procedure is new for you then call on your member buddy to join your team or spend sometime coaching you through the process. I've asked our staff to clearly mark the mast sheds/racks so we keep the large masts with radar and such in their designated racks and the placement of large masts on the lower rungs as marked on the ends of the sheds. The work space near the crane and along the sheds is very limited so, above all do not leave masts on horses for more than 24 hours. Please clean up all trash, tools, etc. when you are finished. If you have a problem operating the crane then please report it to the Club Manager as soon as possible so it can be inspected and repaired if needed.
Lets have a safe and smooth haulout!

Work opportunities for Fall
and beyond
- from Rear Commodore Paul Brennan
____________________________________________________________
If you are looking for a task to make your own at the club, I have two opportunities. Both are hands on, and you can schedule the work to some extent yourself to occur during work parties, or when it's most convenient for you.
Please contact the appropriate people directly.
Tricanna Maintenance Coordinator
This person organizes the dismasting and haulout in Fall, then the bottom painting, launch, and rigging in Spring, with some contribution to any required mid-season maintenance.
This is a new position; you can do a chunk of the work yourself, share it with others, or use the work-party coordinator to find you help on Saturday mornings. Imagine, having exclusive use of the mast crane during a work party!
Inquiries and applications to Peter Woodall & Diane Schulman, Coordinators, Adult Keelboat Learn-to-Sail at: peterwoodall@rogers.com Awards Coordinator This person handles the ordering and helps organize the presentations of the racing, cruising, and contribution awards at ABYC . Ordering flags, plaques, keepers, and engraving, leading the annual polishing bee, affixing engraved plaques to trophies, maintaining the master trophy list, and organizing all the goodies for presentation at our awards events. Occasional attendance at Sailing Committee meetings is encouraged.
Most of the work for this position occurs in Fall, in a one-month sprint between haulout and mid-November, with the occasional flag order or assist in Winter or Spring. Basic computer skills are required, as well as an attention to detail (there's no UNDO on an engraving machine!).
The incumbent, Alison Liddell, is willing to work with you this year to ensure lots of opportunities for questions to be answered and a seamless transition in this important role.
Inquiries and applications to Paul McDonald, Chair, Sailing Committee at:

Club cruise to Whitby Yacht Club
enjoyed by all
___________________________________________________________
The Weather Gods promised fair weather and light winds...and that's exactly what we had for the cruise over to Whitby...those who left AB's a bit later got better winds. Water levels were low...a few boats had to be re-assigned slips as they touched mud going into their slips. Not a worry...a total of 7 boats and 3 cars totalling 23 people made the trek to WYC for the Wild Whitby Olympic Games. The chall enge included the Gum Shakers, Bolt Stackers, Beer Cup Toss and the Beer Case Puzzle (too bad the Penny Nylon Hunt didn't run due to equipment failure :-) ). In the end, Team #1 consisting of Mary, Roger, Elizabeth and Arlene proved victorious taking gold and a bottle of wine. Photos provided by Tina Heimann
Happy hour with appetizers were followed by homemade Danno Burgers (sans mushrooms) and Potato Salad. Dinner ended with a scrumptious dessert selection, including Liz's famous Brownies. The evening was capped off with the gang assembling in the club house huddled around the gas fireplace reminiscing about the great cruising season we've all had. It was great spending time with you all ! Your Cruise Hosts, Danno, Tina & WatsonSolitude |
Trophy return time
- from Rear Commodore Paul Brennan
_____________________________________________________
With the end of the season approaching, we are reminding all of you with a trophy proudly perched on your mantle to return it to the club. Take advantage of the next sailing day, or the General Meeting to return your trophy before the deadline -- all trophies must be back in the building before October 1st! You can gently place trophies on the floor in the communications room, under the bulletin boards.
After last year's frantic phone calls trying to chase down missing trophies, ABYC is considering being featured on the reality show Repo Men. Imagine the amusement of your neighbours as two very large, very tattooed individuals pound on your door at 7 a.m. on a Sunday morning with you cowering in your bathrobe, or, even better, sneak in through the window, wrap a chain around your hearth, and tow fireplace, mantle, and racing hardware through your bay window and down the street.
As much fun as it would be to star on TV, please get your trophies in before we have to waste volunteer hours phoning and emailing you with reminders. Please ensure trophies are in good condition, and it would be appreciated if you returned them reasonably clean. If you notice any damage, however caused, please put a big note on the trophy so that repairs can be arranged.

How's your docK?
- from Mike Leroux
______________________________________
Are you tripping on uneven boards?
Are some of the boards loose?
Do the fender boards need repairing?
If the answer to any of these questions is YES, then you need the Dock Doctors.
Please report any issues to the Dock Doctors' Admin Assistant, Mike Leroux at mikeleroux@sympatico.ca by the end of September.
This information is needed for budget planning as well as setting up the clinic hours that begin after haul out.
We look forward to hearing from you.

Award Nominations
- from Rear Commodore Paul Brennan
_______________________________________________________
Overall Racing Awards
If you have raced outside of LORC and the club, and wish these results to be considered for the Ashbridge or Stapleton Trophies, you must submit them no later than September 30th.
Contribution Awards
We have a lot of very dedicated members at ABYC who go above and beyond the call of duty. It is crucial that we take the time to recognize this kind of leadership behaviour, as we all try to maintain and continually improve our club.
Please take time to consider if one of your fellow members (of any category!) should be nominated for one of these very important awards:
Commodore's Award - for best representation of ABYC in any branch of yachting, inside or outside the Club.
Al Clinker Memorial - for the unsung hero, always cheerfully helping out for the benefit of ABYC and fellow members.
Alice Patterson memorial - for services to boat racing.
Cradle Crew Award - for meritorious service by a member of the cradle crew.
Hartley Trophy - to the family that contributes the most to club activities.
Leo Cotey Trophy - for the woman who has contributed most to ABYC during the year.
Keen Crew Award - to the person who has demonstrated outstanding dedication or performance as crew.
Michael Stuart Trophy - for the most outstanding act of sportsmanship.
Don Davis Trophy - for the Dinghy sailor who contributes most to ABYC, in cruising, racing, or club improvement.
Otto Van Dam Shorewall Trophy - for volunteer services rendered to the club.
Roly McKillop Award - for volunteer services rendered to the club.
Stacy Trophy - to the member who makes the greatest contribution to developing a lifelong love of sailing in young sailors.
A short statement of the contributions and why you feel the award is deserved is all that is required.
Nominations for all awards close on Haulout Weekend, but please think about it now, and send in your suggestions early, before worries about cradles, masts and mooring lines lead us to forgetting about the work our fellow members do for our club.
You can send nominations or racing results to rearcomm@abyc.on.ca, or drop them in to the office, and I'll ensure that they are forwarded to the appropriate parties for consideration.

 Final Crane Haulout Information
- from Anthony Mirvish, Crane Committee Chair
__________________________________________________________________
CRADLE LAYOUT & YARD MARKING
The yard will be marked with cradle and other haulout locations on Saturday October 6 starting at approximately 8:30 AM. The marking of the cradle locations will be complete by approximately noon. Vehicles are not permitted in the main parking lot or the lower parking area behind Blue dock, and the yard will be closed to prevent access while the markings are being placed. Club members are requested to remove their vehicles Friday night. For those unfamiliar with the process, the marks for the cradle locations in the main yard consist of either spray-painted bulls eye targets and letters, or spikes with steel washers and pink ribbons. The steel washers have letters on them that correspond to particular boats. The spikes are driven flush with the ground to prevent damage to car tires; please do not remove them. Markings along Blue Wall, in the Drysail Area and the Coatsworth Cut consist of spray-painted letters and hash marks that correspond to the cradle center lines. Additionally, the rail area will be marked with spray-painted lines and short wood stakes to denote the limits of the crane boat storage area. These marks are very important as we must not place the boats too close to the ways used by the railways. The cradles for boats being hauled by crane will be laid out on Thursday, October 11. The cradles will be laid out starting at 9:00 a.m.. Based on previous years' experience, the layout will be finished before 5:00 p.m.. While the cradles are being laid out, no vehicles will be admitted to the club. All vehicles must be removed from the parking lots by 8:30 AM on the 11th. Vehicles remaining on the grounds may be towed. CRANE YARD HAULOUT DIAGRAM
The crane haul plan is now complete. I will post a copy of the yard haulout diagram in the window of the Club Office within the next week. Boats that will be hauled on Friday will be circled. Do not assume that your boat is in the same location as it was last year: We have many new boats in the fleet and the yard layout and haul order have been revised to accommodate them, with many other boats moving as a consequence. Yard location is a function of displacement, draft, beam, crane capacity and overall logistics. BOATS HAULED BY CRANE AND MOVED BY HYDRAULIC TRAILER
There are 20 boats being hauled with the hydraulic trailer this year. All will be hauled on Friday, October 19 and all but one will be stored in the rail area. Boats being hauled using the hydraulic trailer require blocking under their cradles to allow the trailer to slide under it and pick the cradle and boat up together. Blocks should be 6 x 6 timber and a minimum of 6 (six) per cradle are recommended. In addition, those boats whose yard position is close to the railway will be on sloping ground, so 1x2, 1x4 and 2x4 leveling wood and shims are strongly recommended. The club has a supply of 6x6 blocks from last year and we will be cutting up Way 10 to make more. However, owners are strongly encouraged to provide a supply for their own use. Some cradles currently have steel "feet" made from I or square HSS shapes welded to them. These serve the same purpose as blocks so if your cradle has 6 feet, you won't need wood blocks. The boats that will be hauled by crane and moved by hydraulic trailer are as follows: Mermaid II
Mr. Turtle
Jabiru
Gentle Dreams
Time Bandit
Fantasy
Isogon
Mischief
Zephyr
Tasty Waves
Annie's Fantasea
Fat Cat
Blue Buccaneer
Wild Rice
Day Dream II
Laime II
Play D'Eau
Snowstorm
Penny Cress II
Feisty Lady
Moomba III
Leveling wood is strongly recommended for Time Bandit, Fantasy, Isogon, Mischief, Zephyr, Tasty Waves, Annie's Fantasea, Fat Cat, Blue Buccaneer, Wild Rice and Day Dream II. If you have any questions about the requirements for this area, please contact me. HAULOUT SCHEDULE
Haulout will start at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, October 19 for both the large and small cranes. This will allow us to integrate the 20 boats being hauled by the hydraulic trailer into the overall plan and coordinate them with the crane moves. It should mean a shorter Saturday. The start time for the large crane is thus earlier than last year. In addition, the small crane will start on Blue Wall rather than in the Drysail area, unlike past years. VOLUNTEERS FOR CRADLE LAYOUT
Volunteers are requested for the cradle layout on October 11. The club will provide lunch and all time counts towards club work hours. Although the layout will take most of the day, please feel free to come out even if you can only participate for half the day: it is a fairly physical activity and the more help, the better. SLING MARKS
Please mark the lifting points for your boat either on the toe-rail or on the side of the hull immediately below it. This is where the crews will position the slings prior to lifting your boat. Small ABYC stickers are available for this purpose from the club office. If you are unsure as to where the marks should go, please feel free to contact me and I will help you. Proper identification of the lifting points for your boat will prevent damage to through-hull fittings, shafts, and propellers. Although the dock crews are very experienced and knowledgeable, and the owners will be asked to okay the lifting points at haulout, the ultimate responsibility lies with you, the owner. Your cooperation is appreciated. QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS If you have any questions about the crane haulout, please feel free to contact me directly. |
Move boats out of Dinghy area ____________________________________________________________ Owners of boats stored in the Dinghy area are reminded that all boats must be moved from that area by October 1, 2012. If you don't take your boat home, there is space available in Bay Belle Park.

Crane Haulout 2012
- from Anthony Mirvish, Crane Committee Chair
_______________________________________________
The planning for this year's haulout is underway and unlike last year, the entire crane haulout will take place over a single weekend on the dates in the events book (October 19-21). Space is tight, so any boat brought into the fleet after September 7 will not be hauled by crane this year. The only exception to this policy will be for existing members who bring in a new boat of similar dimensions (length, beam, draft and displacement) to their current boat.
Any member who is not planning to haul and store with us this year should notify the club office and the crane committee chairman of this as soon as possible. Anyone who plans to change their haulout and winter storage status from last year (e.g. did not haul/store at ABYC last year but planning to haul/store at ABYC this year - or vice versa) is requested to inform the Crane Committee Chairman and the Club office as soon as possible. Apart from assisting the planning for haulout, this will allow appropriate updates to the club's database.

Wendy Loat's Race Report _________________________________________________________Last weekend saw the last races of the LOSHRS series. Only two boats from ABYC competed. Congratulations to both Umi Taka (Dennis Dice and Roger Van Vlack) and Lively (Murray Gainer) who both finished third in the race to Port Dalhousie and Lively was second in the race back in the white sail division while Umi Taka was fourth. Full results can be found at http://pcyc.net/on-water-activities/lake-ontario-short-handed-racing-series. This Saturday is the Donald Summerville Memorial Race, which is now part of our "Offshore Series" and counts both towards the season championship and also towards the John Payne Trophy and the Elizabeth Kimball Trophy. Register NOW at www.lorc.org. You will need to enter your credit card information but all fees will be refunded back to your card on Friday. Afterwards, the club is hosting a party featuring the Primitive Mudmen of New Guinea (same group as last year and also at Presentation Night last year). Flags and trophies (of which there are many) will be handed out at the party following the race, so plan to stay around after the race and tell tall tales. As well, the LORC Regatta Series trophies will be handed out and there are several recipients from ABYC. Come on out and cheer them on! Finally, if you are interested in the J24 Worlds taking place this week at Rochester YC, you can follow the action via Kattack at http://2012j24worlds.com/. Follow all the action from the comfort of your desk. |
