Macassa Bay Yacht Club Cruise
1-3 September, 2012

- from Al & Louise (Trinity)

___________________________________________________________________

With the remnants of Hurricane Isaac churning its way up the Mississippi Valley, six boats set sail for Macassa Bay Yacht Club in Hamilton Harbour.  They enjoyed a glorious weekend on the water, and a sojourn to a club never before attended by an ABYC cruise.  In attendance were Harmonium, Day Dream II, Jolly Rog, Starkindler II, Double Time and the host boat Trinity.  Half the fleet slipped ABYC harbour for Port Credit Friday night, and enjoyed a magnificent sunset on approach to PCYC.  The next day, our timely rendezvous at the Burlington Bridge saw the road span rise on the hour as scheduled, and four of our fleet entered Hamilton Harbour with the remaining two entering later in the day.  Our concerns about the bridge openings were unfounded as it is clear the openings are announced well in advance.  The low water conditions were very ably managed by MBYC's harbourmaster who got the fleet together on a single dock without anyone being aground.  Special thanks to Ken who drove Louise to a grocery store to replace a few lost items.  After dinner, the conversation flowed well into the evening.

The next day saw muffins and cappuccinos on Trinity before each crew struck out to explore the neighbourhood.  Al & Louise explored one of the many bicycle trails that eventually took them along an abandoned railway line to the former Sulphur Springs Station on top of the escarpment - the wooded trails are something to come back for.  Dinner that night was at the Royal Hamilton YC with lots more good conversation.  Monday morning saw the lift bridge rise 15 minutes early for a freighter, but it stayed up until the designated 9:00a.m. timeslot.  However, to the dismay of Jolly Rog's 9:05 arrival, the bridge was up only 'till the 9:00a.m. timeslot, and they were forced to wait until the next hourly opening.  Being close counts in horseshoes, darts and hand grenades, but not (it seems) in transit times.  The wind spirits gave us good winds on Friday, but demanded penance on Sunday as the crews faced an up-wind slog coming home.

Those headed to Humber Bay for the CNE air show may have fared slightly better initially, but the late arrivers also had to overcome stronger winds that prevailed in the early evening.  Altogether, the ABYC cruisers who visited Macassa Bay were impressed by the hospitality of the club, while enjoying the scenery along the waterfront walking trails and the camaraderie that comes from gaining a destination that's a bit more of a challenge.  Best of all, the weather held no surprises from Isaac, which showed the good grace to stay well clear for another 12 hours.

Vigilance is important
- from Rennie Stobbs, ABYC Manager
_______________________________________________

Now that the weather is changing and fewer people are around the club, you are asked to be vigilant about any activity that you may find suspicious.  We have recently had an outboard motor taken from one of our Member's boat.  If you see or have seen anything that doesn't appear right, please report it to the ABYC Office.  Also, please don't make it easy for someone to take your valuable property - keep it locked-up or out of sight.
Along the Erie Canal

We have a short YouTube video from ABYC Members Nina Schmidt & John Waller on board Sunkissed, taken as they head south for an extended period of time.  The video was made with a time-lapse camera as they went through 2 locks in the Erie Canal.

Have a look at the interesting short clip.

Haulout Information
Move boats out of Dinghy area
____________________________________________________________

Owners of boats stored in the Dinghy area are reminded that all boats must be moved from that area by October 1, 2012.  If you don't take your boat home, there is space available in Bay Belle Park.
Crane Haulout 2012
- from Anthony Mirvish, Crane Committee Chair
_______________________________________________

The planning for this year's haulout has started.  Unlike last year, the entire crane haulout will take place over a single weekend on the dates in the events book (October 19-21).  I expect that more boats will be moved by hydraulic trailer this year than last, with likely one additonal way being taken in the railyard for this purpose (now that the docks are built, the railway gets some space back).

Space will be tight, so any boat brought into the fleet after September 7 will not be hauled by crane this year. The only exception to this policy will be for existing members who bring in a new boat of similar dimensions (length, beam, draft and displacement) to their current boat.

Any member who is not planning to haul and store with us this year should notify the club office and the crane committee chairman of this as soon as possible.

Anyone who plans to change their haulout and winter storage status from last year (e.g. did not haul/store at ABYC last year but planning to haul/store at ABYC this year - or vice versa) is requested to inform the Crane Committee Chairman and the Club office as soon as possible.  Apart from assisting the planning for haulout, this will allow appropriate updates to the club's database.

The last of the LORC Open Regattas was on Saturday, hosted by QCYC.  From all reports, it was a wild one!

Congratulations to Stephen Trevitt and the crew of Crime Scene, who once again dominated in the wild weather, winning two of the three races in IRC 1.  Murray Gainer and the crew of Lively did well to finish 5th, despite having to retire due to damage caused in a collision (not their fault).

In the IRC 2 division, Calum Semple and the Sona gang finished second, while the Flynns aboard Starwatch managed a fourth place finish.

Don't forget!  Now is the time to register for the Donald Summerville Memorial Race hosted by ABYC on September 22.  Remember, it is the long distance race that counts towards the club championships - season and offshore, so be sure to register and come out.  Registration is free for ABYC members.  You will have to input your credit card info, but you will not be charged.  Join the party afterwards with entertainment provided by the Primitive Mudmen of New Guinea.
