Cruise to Oakville Yacht Squadron
(OYS) - August 4 - 6
- from Lyn DeSouza and David Cloutier
_____________________________________________________________

On August 4 - 6 we will cruise to OYS located on the west side of Sixteen Mile Creek.  OYS is doing a reciprocal cruise to ABYC.

To help our dock staff with slip assignments for visiting OYS members, please advise us via email if you are planning to return early (i.e. August 5) from the cruise to your slip at ABYC.

David Cloutier and Lyn DeSouza will host the cruise with plans to feed you with steak, salad and potatoes.  We are following an English Olympic theme this year.  Please ensure you sign up in advance, so that we can ensure there is enough food for all.  We look forward to sampling your appetizer or dessert contributions.

If you are vegetarian, please let us know and we will accommodate your wishes with some other tasty treats.

We will send the dock assignments to signed up participants later this week once they are received from OYS.  Upon our arrival at OYS we will monitor VHF 68.

During our travel to OYS, we will monitor 16 and will respond to calls to Surprise.

I want to thank our Friday evening restaurant staff for their excellent assistance when our friend Manfred collapsed and was unconscious for a few minutes last Friday evening.

My wife, Annemarie and I had invited our friends to enjoy the Blue Moon Party.  After a small meal in the dining room, we were on our way over to the party, except our friend Manfred who forgot his jacket upstairs.  All of a sudden a staff member called out my name, Helmut,....I ran back and upstairs, and found Manfred on the floor with ABYC member, Haig DeRusha by his side looking after him.  A staff member had already called 911 and within minutes the Emergency Teams showed up and Haig filled them in on what had happened.  The ambulance then took him to the hospital were he still is undergoing various tests.

A great THANK YOU to all who were so responsive.

Thank You

Helmut & Annemarie Ott

As a follow-up to the article about Amarone II's run-in with the RCMP joint task-force, I sent an email to Transport Canada to ask for the exact rules regarding what rights a boater has (or as it would seem, doesn't have) when it comes to being boarded/searched on the water.  This isn't a commentary on whether the rules are fair or not, or how anyone should conduct themselves, just the reply as provided by Transport Canada.

-------

You, as the operator of the pleasure craft, must offer reasonable assistance during the interaction with the law enforcement on the water.

The enforcement officers have the right to board your pleasure craft under Canada Shipping Act, 2001 and its regulations

Canada Shipping Act, 2001 - Part 10 - Pleasure Craft

Powers

(4) Enforcement officers acting under subsection (2) and inspectors acting under subsection (3) may

(a) stop or board the craft at any reasonable time;

(b) direct any person to put into operation or cease operating any machinery or equipment on the craft;

(c) direct that the craft not be moved until the inspection is completed;

(d) direct any person to move the craft to a safe place if the officer or inspector has reasonable grounds to believe that it does not meet the requirements of this Part or the regulations made under this Part or exposes any person to serious danger, and direct that it not be operated until it meets those requirements or no longer exposes any person to serious danger; and

(e) direct any person to move the craft to a safe place if the officer or inspector has reasonable grounds to believe that the operator does not meet the requirements of the regulations made under this Part, and direct that the operator not operate it until the operator meets those requirements.

Duty to assist

(5) The owner or person in charge of a pleasure craft and every person on board shall

(a) give an officer or inspector all reasonable assistance to enable them to carry out an inspection and exercise any power conferred by this section; and

(b) produce to an officer or inspector any document, or provide them with any information, that the officer or inspector may reasonably require, for the administration of this Part or Part 5 (Navigation Services) or the regulations made under either of those Parts

Vessel Operation Restriction Regulations:

17. An enforcement officer may

(a) direct or prohibit the movement of any vessel; and

(b) stop and board any vessel at any reasonable time, and

(i) direct any person to put into operation or cease operating any equipment on board the vessel,

(ii) ask any pertinent questions of, and demand all reasonable assistance from, any person on board the vessel, and

(iii) require that any person on board the vessel provide to the enforcement officer, for examination, any document or information that is in the person's possession.

And under the Competency of Operator of Pleasure Craft Regulations:

8.1 An enforcement officer may, in order to verify and ensure compliance with these Regulations,

(a) ask any pertinent questions of, and demand all reasonable assistance from, the owner or master, or any person who is in charge or appears to be in charge, of a pleasure craft;

(b) require that the owner or master or other person who is in charge or appears to be in charge of the pleasure craft produce forthwith

(i) personal identification, and

(ii) any other document required by these Regulations; and

(c) go on board any pleasure craft.

Wendy Loat's Race Report
_________________________________________________________

We're in the heat of summer and the racing season.  Canada doesn't have too many medal hopes in the Olympic Games, but closer to home we have some of our very own champions to celebrate.

PCYC runs a string of regattas in July, starting with their Open Regatta (reported on a couple of weeks ago).  The following Thursday, they welcomed Junior Sailors from all over southern Ontario for the Steerer's Regatta which ran for two days followed by the Four Sisters Regatta.  Inserted in there somewhere is the Lake Ontario 300.

First off, ABYC lent a hand in running these events, by running a full course at the Open Regatta, and a course at both the Steerers and Four Sisters events.  The Steerers' provided BIG WAVES both days and high winds on Friday, making it very difficult for RC and jury members alike (not to mention for the competitors).  ABYC also provided Jury members for these regattas.  Many thanks to all who volunteered for this event as ABYC's efforts were very much appreciated by PCYC.

In the Steerers' Regatta, Shawn Gershman finished third overall in the Opti fleet, and second in the Red fleet.  Ian Doell was fourth overall and second in the Blue fleet.  Sarah Christensen was third in the Red fleet.  In the Four Sisters Regatta, Shawn Gershman placed FIRST in the Opti Red fleet, and Quinten Beelik was 9th in the Blue Fleet.  Martin Staadecker was 15th in the Red fleet.

In the Laser class, Matthew Sherar placed fourth in the Four Sisters event.

The Lake Ontario 300 began in light winds on Saturday morning.   Congratulations to Dennis Dice and Roger Van Vlack who finished FIRST overall in the PHRF fully crewed division aboard Umi TakaCrime Scene with Stephen Trevitt and crew finished second in their IRC division and 8th overall in the IRC fully crewed division.  Murray Gainer and his Lively crew were fourth in their IRC division.   Also competing were Larry Harrison (Merlin) and Calum Semple (Sona).  Full results can be found at http://www.yachtscoring.com/event_results_detail.cfm?Race_Number=1&eID=572.

The Etchells 22's held their Canadian Championships at RCYC and ABYC was represented by Mike Hren who raced with Alan Leibel who finished 3rd overall.   Barbara Jones and her crew finished 10th racing under the ABYC burgee.

The Youngstown Level Regatta was held this past weekend.  Congratulations to Steve Trevitt and the Crime Scene crew for finishing first in their division, Murray Gainer and the crew of Lively (4th), Frank Hudson aboard Plum Danish III (4th), Chris Robbins in Trimpus (2nd).

Finally, the Ontario Laser Masters' Championships were held at Sturgeon Lakes Sailing Club last weekend in very difficult conditions.  ABYC had one representative - Nick Bailey, who won a silver medal (picture left) in the Grand Masters division and finished 10th overall.

LYRA began on Monday at Oswego Yacht Club.  If there are any ABYC participants a write-up will appear next week.

That's all for this week (I hope).

Ontario Summer Games at ABYC
- volunteers still needed

- from Dave Steenbergen

__________________________________________________________________

As I previously reported, ABYC will host the sailing component of the Ontario Summer Games Friday August 17 to Sunday August 19.  The regatta will bring together top junior sailors to compete for the Provincial under-18 championships in Laser Radial (male and female) and 420 (open).

We are still looking for a few people to fill out our race committee and onshore teams.  On the water we need a mark boat crew for Saturday and two mark boat crew for Sunday.  On shore, we need a couple of launch ramp assistants for each of Saturday and Sunday.  It's not necessary to volunteer for both days, and for the launch ramp jobs half a day would help.

If you can help please contact me at dave.steenbergen@rogers.com

_____________________________________________________

Last week we reported that ABYC's Umi Taka, owned and skippered by Dennis Dice/Roger Van Vlack had won her division in the Lake Ontario 300 race.  At that time we did not know that Umi Taka was also also the winner of 2012 Ackroo Lake Ontario 300 Challenge Sperry Trophy Top PHRF Boat.

Congratulations to Dennis & Roger as well as the crew - Paul-Angus Bark, Tyler Dice, Geoff Eaton.

Shortly after the race, Dennis was interviewed by Greg Nicoll of Sail-World.com.  Click on the following link to read the interview:

The ABYC Junior Race Team had two consecutive regattas, from July 19-22, at PCYC.

Steerers Regatta presented some challenging weather conditions.  As a result, there were many DNC's.  However, a couple of our sailors competed in all races.  For those sailors that competed in some or all of the races, the results were:  Shawn Gershman, 2nd in Red fleet, 3rd overall, Ian Doell, 2nd in Blue fleet, 4th. overall, Sarah Christensen, 3rd in Red fleet, 12th overall and Quinten Beelik, 11th. in Blue fleet and 17th overall.

Four Sisters regatta had much better wind conditions but some tough competition.

  The results were:

Blue fleet: Quinten Beelik, 9th, Ian Doell, 13th, Martin Staadecker, 15th and Jack Peabody, 20th.

Red fleet: Shawn Gershman, 1st, Sarah Christensen, 8th.

  Green fleet: Paul Staadecker, 6th.

ABYC Speakers' Bureau

You are a smart, sensible moderate, right?  Not foolish with your money, certainly - correct?  Yet perhaps you feel that an unusual risk is in the air.  You're no conspiracy theorist, at least not yet.  And yet...

Find out what other smart, sensible moderates like you and I are doing in the shifting sands of this economy.  There is only one asset class that can claim 3000 years as a universally recognized store of value, which has zero counterparty risk, and which has preserved real life purchasing power regardless of what is going on in the world.  We present a special opportunity to learn from an expert whether owning humanity's oldest asset class, gold, is right for you, today.  Could gold once again be the difference?

Attend our next Speakers' Bureau presentation to learn and discuss...

1000 Island Musings
- from Commodore Rick Humphrey
______________________________________________________

I am hoping that you are having a great, sailing-filled summer so far.  If you haven't been away from the dock yet this year, take the time and come on down to the Club and go out.  The part of sailing that I am somewhat lazy about is the "go down to the boat, go out for an hour and enjoy a short sail".  When I have made that even short commitment, I have always had a great time.  Sometimes, it is that simple.

As I write this, I am sitting on Carellen in the Gananoque Municipal Marina, stocking up on groceries and anticipating a few days of Island hopping in the 1000 Islands with Paula and my son, Graham who has been able to get a couple of days off from the Ceremonial Guard in Ottawa.  We are looking at anchoring at Camelot today, a beautiful island that has a particularly lovely cove.  We have spent time at anchor in Mulcaster anchorage.

Next Monday, I return to Toronto for the Board Meeting as our Club's business does not take a holiday.  I thank the Board Members and all those who give of their time to make our Club a better place to be.  I also thank those who go the extra mile to "talk up" our Club.  As members, we are all emissaries for our Club, and our actions and words while we travel the lake speak volumes.  I hear good things around the lake about our Club consistently, this trip included.

It is also getting close to the time when we anticipate the election of Directors and there are a few positions that are open for competition.  At the September General Meeting, the positions of Rear Commodore, Vice-Commodore of Financial Services, and the Vice-Commodore of Marine Services are open.  If you feel that you can contribute to the Club in such a position, feel free to apply, but please feel free to contact me about what the current Board is doing and the issues that we face.

Keep up the good work ABYC.  As Commodore, I can't thank you enough!

Respectfully submitted,

Rick Humphrey, Commodore

Life on a Mark Boat
- from Rear Commodore Paul Brennan
____________________________________________

I spent the weekend on a mark boat, as ABYC ran a course for RCYC, returning the favour they did for us.  We have a few more events this summer where we return favours, or help out with youth events.

We have a number of qualified mark boat operators, who know how to drive the boats and what's required to set marks. (thanks to Dave Steenbergen and Don McIntyre for running training sessions the last two years).
