- from Commodore Rick Humphrey
______________________________________________________

I am hoping that you are having a great, sailing-filled summer so far.  If you haven't been away from the dock yet this year, take the time and come on down to the Club and go out.  The part of sailing that I am somewhat lazy about is the "go down to the boat, go out for an hour and enjoy a short sail".  When I have made that even short commitment, I have always had a great time.  Sometimes, it is that simple.

As I write this, I am sitting on Carellen in the Gananoque Municipal Marina, stocking up on groceries and anticipating a few days of Island hopping in the 1000 Islands with Paula and my son, Graham who has been able to get a couple of days off from the Ceremonial Guard in Ottawa.  We are looking at anchoring at Camelot today, a beautiful island that has a particularly lovely cove.  We have spent time at anchor in Mulcaster anchorage.

Next Monday, I return to Toronto for the Board Meeting as our Club's business does not take a holiday.  I thank the Board Members and all those who give of their time to make our Club a better place to be.  I also thank those who go the extra mile to "talk up" our Club.  As members, we are all emissaries for our Club, and our actions and words while we travel the lake speak volumes.  I hear good things around the lake about our Club consistently, this trip included.

It is also getting close to the time when we anticipate the election of Directors and there are a few positions that are open for competition.  At the September General Meeting, the positions of Rear Commodore, Vice-Commodore of Financial Services, and the Vice-Commodore of Marine Services are open.  If you feel that you can contribute to the Club in such a position, feel free to apply, but please feel free to contact me about what the current Board is doing and the issues that we face.

Keep up the good work ABYC.  As Commodore, I can't thank you enough!

Respectfully submitted,

Rick Humphrey, Commodore

Get your safety inspection sticker from CPS
- from S2S Editors
______________________________________________

In response to the article last week regarding the boarding of an ABYC boat by the RCMP, we looked into the possibility of avoiding one of these boardings by having a sticker that shows that our safety equipment has been checked and is in compliance with Transport Canada's Small Vessel Regulations for the current year.

While a boarding can always occur for any number of reasons, generally, if you have one of the inspection stickers, the chances are greater that you will not be boarded.  We contacted Great Lakes Marine Security (RCMP & Coast Guard) and the Toronto Harbour Police and we were told that they have the right to board boats and having this sticker may help avoid a boarding in some situations.

How do you get one of these stickers?  Easy!  Contact the Canadian Power & Sail Squadron (CPS) and arrange for a free courtesy inspection by one of their trained representatives.  CPS is working in partnership with Transport Canada's Office of Boating Safety to help ensure that you and your family have an enjoyable and safe summer on the water.  In the case of ABYC members, simply contact Craig Stewart of the Ashbridge's Bay Squadron at craignstewart@hotmail.com or 416-200-1419 and he will arrange a convenient date and time to do the inspection.

We decided to have Gillygaloo's safety equipment inspected so that we would have the blue sticker that confirms that our boat meets the Boating Safety standard for 2012.  We contacted Craig Stewart by email on Wednesday of last week and the inspection was done at 1:00pm the next day.  The process takes about thirty minutes, your equipment is reviewed, lots of good suggestions are provided during the inspection and if you are in compliance with the regulations, you get your sticker the same day.  You can help by being prepared - make sure you have your boat registration as well as your Pleasure Craft Operator Card available.  Also, have all your safety equipment laid out on a berth or in the cockpit and make sure nothing is beyond the expiry date etc..  Craig is a friendly person and will help you understand the requirements and make suggestions for improvement where needed.

If you are not sure about the safety equipment requirement for your particular vessel, check with your Safe Boating Guide.  If you do not have  a Safe Boating Guide or have an older version, you can view the 2012 online version at:   Safe Boating Guide

Have a safe summer.
Crewbank Update & Invitation
- from Murray Gainer, Crewbank Coordinator
________________________________________________________________

ABYC's Series "A" and "B" (Tuesday and Thursday) evening racing concluded last week.  Crewbank placed a total of 37 people on racing boats during this 8-week period.  Some of these were "one-off" placements, and a large number have resulted in permanent crewing positions.  This figure is in addition to some 27 individuals who turned up for the crewbank evening in May and used Crewbank to find a crew or find a skipper.

Most importantly, every single person who wanted to sail and who turned up on time got a crewing position:  not a single person who came out to Crewbank prepared to sail was left on the dock.  This, in part, is thanks to a new system introduced this year under which skippers specifically volunteer, during the race sign up process, to take out at least one new crew during the season.

While Crewbank was initially placing 4 to 5 persons each evening, more recently the numbers have dwindled considerably and for the first time this season we consistently have more skippers looking for crew than we do crew to place.

So, here is a renewed invitation.  If you're interested in racing and want to try it out, there is still plenty of time to participate.  Racing season is only half over:  Club racing continues uninterrupted with Series "C" and "D" commencing this Tuesday July 10 and Thursday July 12, and continues through August.

Turn up ready to sail in Duffy's Lounge (second floor near the bar) ready to sail at about 5:30 any Tuesday or Thursday and we'll get you on a boat.

Party On The Point
- Summerfest 2012
_________________________________________________

About 100 club members, friends, and family enjoyed the first annual ABYC Summerfest party last Saturday out on Bay Belle Point.

The day started off with the first of the season's Family Races which ran in light winds after the threat of thunderstorms had passed.   After the race, festivities on the point got under way with numerous games and activities for kids and adults.  A terrific BBQ picnic dinner presented by Chef Paul followed the games.  The fun continued into the evening with another excellent show by ABYC's own Weathered Legs who outdid themselves yet again and played well past sunset and into the night.

All in all it was a great first year's party and we are looking forward to next year's.  Thanks to everyone who attended and brought their kids along to add a little more fun and laughter to the Point.  We would also like to thank all of the people who helped make this event happen including Molly Asseltine, Murray Gainer, Shaun Carey, Paul Angus Bark, Rob Gow, Paul Brennan, Donna Miller, Alan Velenosi, Tom Warrilow, Brian Somerville, the Weathered Legs, Chef Paul (and the ever hardworking kitchen staff), Albert and Rennie.

We would also like to thank Mike and his crew for going above and beyond in getting Bay Belle Point ready to welcome all those guests.

Thanks!

Don, Debbie, and Camielle.

Set Sail for Hope 2012

- from Paul Angus Bark

_________________________________________________________

Every year on a Friday in late June, a charity event is held to benefit Camp Trillium - Set Sail for Hope.

Corporate clients (and some non-corporate) bid on an afternoon on the Toronto Islands enjoying fine cuisine followed by a sail around the islands on a large sailboat.  The boats come from various yacht clubs in the area while the food and service is provided by a collection of restaurants from the Toronto area.  What makes the event really special is that everything is donated so all money raised goes directly to Camp Trillium.

This year on June 22 was the first time for ABYC's chef, Paul Arruda, as well as Albert Philpott, our Food and Beverage manager, and they did a fantastic job.  The first course was stuffed crab cakes in a half shell with quinoa salad, the very same crab cakes now on our menu.  Next, the table was treated to the contrast of salt and sweet when we served prosciutto and mango on a bed of spring mix with chèvre, cherry tomato and pomegranate.  The main course was pecan crusted fillet of beef medallions with apple and cranberry wild rice and grilled yellow zucchini; keep an eye out for this dish should it ever appear on a fine dining menu.  The courses were complemented with two wines provided by Peller Estates, a Chardonnay and a Meritage, and was completed with a selection of mousses.

Of course, anything involving ABYC will always involve dedicated volunteers. The team, who arrived at the club at 7am to start the day, included Ian Gow, Anne Gray, Brian Sommerville, Adrienne Philpott, Holly Lajoie and myself, Paul Bark.  Last but not least, Briar and Mike Robertson get a special mention as they put in long hours planning the event with the organizing committee; Mike has been involved since the inaugural event 26 years ago.

Special thanks to Muskoka Brewery, Gordon Food Service and Peller Estates for providing food and drink.

Four Sisters/Steerers Junior Regattas
- from Calum Semple, Race Committee Coordinator
______________________________________________________________________

ABYC will be providing a race committee and a mark boat to support the Four Sisters/Steerer Regattas at PCYC in two weeks.  The Regattas run Thursday 19th July to Sunday 22nd July and is one of the main local regattas for junior sailors.

We are very short of help for this event, so parents, please think about coming out to watch your kids on the water close up, and for others, please come out and support our junior race team.

Thank you!

Calum.

P.S.  In addition to being a great opportunity to help young sailors build their love of the sport, race committee is a great way to contribute volunteer hours to the club.  When ABYC sends a team to manage a race, volunteer hours are all applicable to our annual quotas.  If you don't want to operate a shovel, contact Calum and earn hours for operating a horn or a clipboard!

This past weekend the ABYC Senior Race Team competed at the Sarnia Yacht Club.  Three lasers and three 29ers competed on two race courses in large swells and winds of 15 knots gusting to 25 knots against a competitive field of sailors with some outstanding results including Matt Sherar, who finished fourth in the full rig lasers despite a broken toe.

The team arrived back at ABYC late Sunday night tired, sunburned and happy!

Another Summer Racing Season has started
- from Kim Antonius
__________________________________________________________________________

Another season of summer racing has begun!  This season we have 20 racers on the junior and senior race teams and an experienced and dedicated crew of coaches.  We will be posting photos and bios of our coaching staff and group pictures of our race teams outside the sailing school club house.

We have a full summer of regattas lined up with two already under our belt.  The Junior Race team competed at the Fogh Boorman Regatta at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club and the Senior Race Team competed at the Sailfest Sarnia 2012 Regatta this past weekend.

On Wednesday July 11th, we have a visit from a special guest at the club.  Ira Carson, a former ABYC race coach, is on a team that is traveling 8000 km across Canada to raise money for Easter Seals.  Their goal is to raise $8000.00 towards accessible sailing.  Thus far he and his team have traveled from "mile 0" on Vancouver Island to Toronto.  We are thrilled that Ira will be stopping by the club on his way to the East Coast! You can learn more about Ira's cause or donate by following this link. http://8000km.ca/

There are some projects going on to update our equipment and spruce up the junior clubhouse.  A new trailer has been purchased for the Senior Race team and the Junior Rce team is looking to either purchase a new trailer or make modifications to the existing trailer.  Last year our very handy director Sophie McEwan built a bench for outside the clubhouse, we will be building an additional long bench for comfy outside seating.  One of our sponsors, Raymond James Yorkville, has offered to supply the materials and build this bench for us. We will be adding an announcement board to the front of the clubhouse - come check out race results, photos from training and racing and announcements about our team.   Storage and organization of equipment is always on our mind...we are looking to build some new racks for sails and storage for foil bags.
