Dr. Peter Bright, Director of Programs, is currently "ICAN's Employee of the Quarter" for the first quarter of 2008!
After 17 years, Peter is the most veteran of ICAN's employees. In addition to establishing the agency's case management program in 1991, Peter works tirelessly throughout the community to educate individuals about HIV/AIDS and encourages behavior modification to prevent new HIV infections. Under Peter's direction, ICAN's Probation Education Program has increased 250%, and in 2007, nearly 51,000 community outreach contacts were made. Peter's expertise and hard work makes Southwest Florida a better place for all of us.
Rick Allen

Earlier this year, Rick Allen, Operations Manager, was elected as "ICAN's Employee of the Quarter" for the last quarter of 2007.
Rick is a dedicated employee, always working behind the scenes to ensure that all ICAN staff and volunteers have clean, comfortable and safe work environment. Rick is consistently caring and politic to all guests, vendors and clients who seek his assistance. He knows he doesn't always get the credit he truly deserves, but it doesn't deter him from doing a fine job nonetheless and being cheerful and loyally fastidious in his work.

| At-Risk Population Reached by ICAN's Probation Program and HIV Testing |
|
Last year, ICAN's Education Committee, a subcommittee of the Board of Directors, set high-priority goals for ICAN to increase HIV Testing and Counseling and expand the agency's Probation Program. To achieve these goals, Dr. Peter Bright trained several ICAN staff members and volunteers to lead probation classes while he and other staff/volunteers tested participants. Under the Probation Program, individuals sentenced to community service earn 15 hours of community service for attending ICAN's 3-hour HIV/AIDS education seminar (for a nominal fee of $20).
Since January 1, probation classes, taught in both English and Spanish, have increased from twice a month to four times a month. Already this year, 282 probationers have participated in the class; a 65% increase from this time last year. HIV Testing and Counseling was introduced during the probation class in March, and 140 of the 177 individuals tested were students in the Probation Program. In addition, Spanish speaking and black probationers are also referred to ICAN's VOICES/VOCES program which targets minorities at-risk of becoming HIV infected. The success of this program is particularly important since persons coming out of the criminal justice system have a history of behavior that puts them at high risk for HIV infection.
ICAN estimates that by the end of 2008 they will have educated 765 probationers and conducted 500 HIV tests. "It would be impossible for us to achieve these greatly increased numbers without the help of many dedicated staff members and volunteers," said Dr. Peter Bright, Director of Programs. HIV Testing and Counseling staff and volunteers include Pauline Angervil, Earl Givens, Maria Puig and Melissa Shannon. Volunteer educators for the Probation Program include Jessica Collins, Bethany Flanagan, Edwin Martinez, Bob Petersmith and Marisol Rodriguez. |
| Red Ribbon Ball...Old Hollywood Style |
The 7th Annual Red Ribbon Ball, "An Affair to Remember...in the Spirit of Old Hollywood," on March 8, 2008 raised $45,000 for ICAN's client programs. The glamorous evening held at the Hilton Naples featured all the grandeur of a time when Hollywood was royalty...red carpet, celebrities (real and impersonators), paparazzi, cocktails, dinner, dancing and entertainment.
Television personality and Miss America 1993, Leanza Cornett served as Honorary Chairperson of the event, and Patrick Nolan, FOX 4 News, was the local celebrity Master of Ceremonies. Proving to be quite the spitfire, Randy Roberts, female celebrity impersonator extraordinaire, wowed guests as Joan Rivers and Cher.
After three years of dedicated and creative hard work, Co-Chairs Joseph Swenarton and Tony Fernandez (True Joy Interiors) have graciously passed on the leadership of the Red Ribbon Ball to Joseph Hickey (Coach) and Marcia Albert (Burruano Group). ICAN lavishly applauds Joseph S. and Tony for their commitment to making the Red Ribbon Ball a much talked about signature event and looks forward to the event's continued growth under the direction of Joseph H. and Marcia.
Generous sponsors of the 7th Annual Ribbon Ball included:
50Fifty Creative Services
Tim Kling Graphic Design
Hilton Naples
Mr. Joseph Hickey
Mr. Joseph Swenarton and Mr. Tony Fernandez
Bill Smith Appliances and Electronics
Printers Ink
Oswald Trippe and Company, Inc.
Burruano Group
The Bay House
Arturo's Restaurant of NYC
Jaguar Data Systems
A special thank you also goes out to DJ Frankie Z for providing musical entertainment and Kathleen Pica of Auctions Neapolitan for being our auctioneer.
The Red Ribbon Ball would not be possible without the support of sponsors, auction item donors and attendees. We at ICAN so appreciate your valuable friendship that helps us to carryout our mission.
Please mark your calendars and plan to support the 8th Annual Red Ribbon Ball on March 7, 2009!

| Client Story: "ICAN Saved My Life" |
|
When I say that ICAN saved my life, I'm not being patronizing or nice. There is no doubt in my mind that if it weren't for the caring and dedication of the people at ICAN, I wouldn't be alive today!
In 2001, I was diagnosed with cryptococcial pneumonia, my CD4 was nine and my viral load was astronomical. I was too ill to work, I had no money, no doctor, no meds, and I had no idea where to go for help. I had applied for Social Security Disability, and the stress of that battle (I call it "the Great War") had taken such a toll on me emotionally that I was placed in the Crisis Unit at Ruth Cooper Behavioral Care Center for over a week. If it weren't for my family I would have been on the streets, if not for my friends, I might have ended my life.
When I was diagnosed in 1989, I was skeptical that ICAN would be able to help me. "Great" I thought, "just what I needed, more paperwork, appointments, and bureaucratic bull, from and underfunded agency that doesn't care whether or not I lived or died. I was mentally and physically at the end of my rope and now I was going to have to "jump" through yet another set of "hoops", or use the last of the rope to hang myself.
I was wrong. Oh, there was paperwork, and appointments, and bureaucracy, but these are a constant to Persons with AIDS, like meds, taxes and death. What there was NOT were unsympathetic government drones. Imagine my immense relief when instead I found people who were wholeheartedly invested in providing the best quality service to me and others like me. ICAN's staff truly cares and does their utmost to give their clients the help and information we need.
Our case managers work with our doctors and other health care professionals, government agencies and a host of others to improve our health and the quality of our lives. While they're helping us, they are managing all the names, dates, agencies, programs, phone numbers, fax numbers, addresses, times, closing dates, medications and lab results, that are part of the daily life of the HIV/AIDS infected individual. Until you have tried to do all of this yourself, you have no idea how demoralizing and stressful it is! I tried doing do everything alone, and it almost killed me!
Beside case management, there are other terrific programs at ICAN that have enriched my life. I attend the weekly support group and they are really like my family. I outreach to the community to prevent further infections, and I volunteer with ICAN all the time. Due to the tireless efforts, heartfelt dedication, and unwavering commitment of my case manager, Jeff McQuiklin the support group facilitators, and the other ICAN case managers, staff and volunteers, I and others like me are alive today! When I say ICAN saved my life, I'm sincere!
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to everyone at Island Coast AIDS Network, Inc. |
| A Nifty, Thrifty Partnership |
|
Abuse Counseling and Treatment (ACT) and Island Coast AIDS Network (ICAN) have teamed up to offer our donors/supporters the opportunity to participate in the ICAN-ACT Thrift Certificate Program.
The ICAN-ACT Thrift Certificate Program is a new collaborative effort designed to help local businesses and individuals who want to give back to their community. Here's how it works: Businesses and individuals purchase gift certificates to Second ACT Thrift Store and ICAN Junction and donate the certificates to a local charity of their choice. The certificates are distributed to the charity's clients who redeem them for goods and materials. It's that easy!
Purchases from Second ACT Thrift Store and ICAN Junction help support client programs benefiting domestic and sexual assault victims and HIV/AIDS infected and affected individuals, respectively. Second ACT offers gently used clothing, furniture, house wares and more. ICAN Junction specializes in home improvement and building materials including large appliances, plumbing fixtures, light fixtures, flooring, cabinets, doors, windows and much more.
This program offers a winning solution for the entire community. It's an economical and effective way for businesses and individuals to support the charity of their choice during these challenging economic times. Charities help their clients access goods and materials they need in an efficient and time-saving manner and clients get more for their money by acquiring merchandise at a fraction of the retail price.

| A Cabaret Evening for ICAN's
Star Volunteers |
The Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre has once again extended overwhelming generosity to ICAN by hosting the agency's 2nd Annual Volunteer Appreciation Event. On Wednesday, April 30, over 70 of ICAN's star volunteers and guests enjoyed a complimentary reception including hors d'oeuvres and wine, dinner buffet, and the very lively Cabaret show, all courtesy of the Broadway Palm.
"We are so grateful to our friends at the Broadway Palm for enabling us to show our sincere appreciation to our volunteers, shared Terry Hall, President of ICAN's Board of Directors, "This event is just for them...a fun night to celebrate their kind work and selfless giving."
"Susan Johnson, General Manager, and Andrea and Will Prather, Owners, have always held ICAN in their hearts," added Carolyn Moore, Executive Director of ICAN, "ICAN would not be able to carry-out its mission without our wonderful volunteers, and this is a very special way to express our gratitude."
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2006, the dollar value of volunteer work was placed at $18.77 per hour. During ICAN's latest fiscal year, the agency's volunteers logged 9,048 hours for a remarkable total of $169,831 in-kind labor.

| Vic's Painting
Spreads Cheer Over ICAN |
Vic Hein of Vic's Painting, Inc. has again opened his warm heart to ICAN by donating the materials and labor to makeover the interior of the agency's Centex Center building. The walls, now a cheery yellow, tranquil teal and vibrant orange, provide a lively and soothing atmosphere for ICAN's clients, volunteers, staff and visitors.
"ICAN's Client Support Group meets in the Centex Center, and the previous stark white walls did not set the proper ambiance. Now, because of Vic and his fantastic team, the rooms are inviting and uplifting," said Carolyn Moore, Executive Director of ICAN.
Vic Hein is treasured throughout Southwest Florida for his ongoing generosity to non-profit organizations. "Vic has been a dear friend of mine for years, and his bigheartedness never ceases to amaze me. We are very fortunate to have him in our community," said Moore. |
| A Step in the Right Direction |
On Saturday, April 8 over 150 spirited walkers took "a step in the right direction" at the 3rd Annual Naples AIDS Walk for ICAN. The collective contributions from walkers and pledges raised $15,000 to help fund vital support services for more than 500 HIV/AIDS infected clients served by ICAN in Southwest Florida.

Out in full-force, associates from Starbuck's Coffee Company offered herbal tea and water to walkers as ventriloquist David Sleeper and his sidekick, Gumbo Gator, entertained the crowd with comedic antics. Major sponsor, Truly Nolen also provided bottled water along the two mile stroll through beautiful downtown Naples. Celebration MCC and Regions Bank were also generous sponsors of the AIDS Walk.
Patrick Nolan, FOX 4 News, emceed the Celebration Ceremony after the walk recognizing the top fund raisers: Starbuck's Coffee Company, Team NCH, Celebration MCC, the Gay Social Network of Southwest Florida, and Bambusa Bar and Grill. Bethany Flanagan, 19-year old student at Florida Gulf Coast University, shared her personal story about her mother's lost battle with AIDS and current passion as a dedicated HIV/AIDS education volunteer at ICAN.
The afternoon continued with a delicious Italian buffet provided by Bambusa Bar and Grill live music by Let the Good Times Roll Entertainment Company.
Todd Eichmann and Andy Colwell, Co-Chairs, will continue their leadership of the event's organizing committee.
We fondly hope you will "take a step in the right direction" with us at the 4th Annual Naples AIDS Walk for ICAN on Saturday, April 4, 2009! |
