Greetings,

On behalf of the PHAB Board of Directors, I would like to share exciting developments in PHAB's leadership and program development. We would like to announce the PHAB Board's appointment of a new President and Chief Executive Officer by extending a warm welcome to Dr. Kaye Bender, who will continue her ongoing work with PHAB. We also thank Dr. William Riley for his service and commitment to PHAB during the search.
 
This newsletter also provides detailed information about opportunities to provide feedback on the forthcoming accreditation standards and measures. Beginning in February, PHAB will provide a variety of ways to learn about and comment on this foundational work of the accreditation program. Stay tuned!

Bender picPHAB Announces New Leadership!
The PHAB Board of Directors recently appointed Kaye Bender, PhD, RN, FAAN, as the new President and Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Bender brings a wealth of public health and leadership experience to PHAB, making her highly qualified to lead this young organization in establishing a voluntary, national accreditation program for public health departments. 
 
Dr. Bender's experience includes serving as dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and spending more than twenty years with the Mississippi State Department of Health, including five years as the Deputy State Health Officer.  Dr. Bender also served as Chair of the Exploring Accreditation Steering Committee, and as a member of the PHAB Board of Directors. Dr. Bender assumed leadership of PHAB on January 1, 2009, and will begin working full-time in the PHAB office on June 1, 2009.  The full press release is available.
 

Draft Standards: Less Than Two Weeks Away! 

The draft accreditation standards and measures for state, local and territorial health departments will be released for public comment and vetting soon! The drafts will be available for public review and comment from February through April 2009, and the standards will be revised based on the feedback PHAB receives. (PHAB is working closely with tribal partners to develop standards for tribal health departments that are consistent with the draft state and local standards.)
 
Once released, PHAB encourages all members of the public health community to review the standards and provide feedback through any of the following ways:
  • Complete and submit an online or hard copy vetting forms
  • Participate in one of three PHAB standards vetting webcasts, with the first one scheduled for February 17th at 1:00pm EST
  • Invite PHAB to lead a standards vetting discussion at your group meeting (see question corner below)
  • Join weekly Wednesday standards vetting and Q&A calls, led by PHAB Board and Workgroup Members, beginning February 11th at 1:00pm EST

PHAB is committed to communicating updates and information about the development of the accreditation program. The latest question is:
Is PHAB available to lead a standards vetting with my group?
To assist with information dissemination and engagement, and to encourage broad vetting of the draft standards and measures, PHAB is now 'on the road!' PHAB Workgroup Members, Board of Directors Members and staff are available and prepared to lead discussions about the draft standards with groups of potential applicants or interested parties.
