Dear Fellow Alumni,

As some of you are aware the Kansas City School Board, because of financial deficits, is predicting the closing of 30+ of the sixty or so schools in the Kansas City area. One of the schools under consideration to be closed is Northeast High School, with the students "possibly" moving to East High School, but the Junior High School building would remain open, housing both the elementary and junior high students.
The School Board has held open meetings this week to discuss potential closings with the first meeting being held this past Tuesday at Northeast Elementary. Because many schools were discussed on Tuesday there was a huge contention of students, parents, grandparents, neighbors, teachers and alumni present to voice their opinions. Some of our students were given a chance to speak to Dr. Covington (School Board Superintendent) and the board members and they expressed their love for their school, teachers and the alumni. I was very proud to see our students stand up for their school.
It was mentioned that Northeast "may" be considered for a "High Tech School", but the possibility of the school closing still seems high. The closing of Northeast brings up so many concerns. It is a worry that a beautiful and substantial building would be boarded up and deteriorate and become a place for vandalism and gang related activities and add blight to the Northeast area. Dr. Covington did mention that "some" of the closed schools could possibly be leveled and the property converted to parks. The closing of our school would be such a great loss to the entire northeast community.
Dr. Ron Fornelli, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Shores, Mrs. Fana Cona Vogelbaugh and Mr. Jim Carridi accompanied me at the meeting and possibly other alumni. There was too much to be said in the 2-hour time allotted by the School Board. After the meeting adjourned Mr. Carridi and I were able to spend a few moments with Dr. Covington. We were able to give him our feelings on the importance of keeping Northeast High School open and a short synopsis of the wonderful history and amazing Notables that have attended Northeast in the past. We explained that we comprise the largest active alumni association in the country and contribute so much to the schools needs. The alumni provide somewhere between $12,000.00 and $15,000.00 in scholarships each year to graduating students and have repeatedly given monetary assistance to the Robotics Club, the Music Department and the Athletics Department. Dr. Covington inquired if we felt the school was large enough to accommodate the Junior High School students and Mr. Carridi explained there would be plenty of space as the building has a capacity for 2400 students.
It seems this is NOT a dead issue and a final decision has yet to be made. The Kansas City School Board has stated that the final decision should be made by the end of February so now we can only wait and pray for a positive outcome. No matter what the final decision is the Northeast Alumni Association will live on and continue to be active.
We have a very strong and cohesive Alumni and we are all very proud to be Northeast High School graduates.
Please watch for further e-mails as I will continue to keep you updated on the progression of this situation.

Sincerely,
Mike Frederico
