We were recently advised that this scam is making the rounds again. The victim receives a call from someone claiming to be a relative:
"Hi, Grandma [or Grandpa]; I'm in jail. Please don't tell my parents as I don't want them to know. Here is my lawyer to tell you how to bail me out." Another voice comes on and asks you to go to your bank and wire money "for bail."
The recommendation is to write down the caller's instructions for wiring money, and then ask for a telephone number you can call to verify receipt of the money. They may or may not provide phone number.
Hang up and call your grandchild's parents to check on the whereabouts of the child. The odds are the child is not in jail. Call the Sheriff (858-565-5200) and provide them with all information, particularly money wiring instructions and the phone number, if they gave one.
