busWe're Going to UTC!
Many of our seniors have requested a bus trip shopping to UTC, and we're listening!  Join us Friday, September 5 from 9 am to 12:30 pm.  We will take you home and carry your packages to the door.  If you would like to join us, call Heather to reserve your seat at 792-7565.
Back by Popular Demand!
mvoie reelMovie Saturday is Back!
Back by popular demand is "Movie Saturday," our monthly bus trip to the movies the second Saturday of each month, starting September 13. Departure time will be determined by your movie choices, but we generally try to target the first show of the day at the La Jolla Landmark and the second show of the day at AMC La Jolla Village. Call the office to sign up at 792-7565.
Digital Television Conversion
Are you ready for digital TV? After February 17, 2009, all full-power television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting in analog and switch to 100% digital broadcasting. Digital broadcasting promises to provide a clearer picture and more programming options and will free up airwaves for use by emergency responders.
Congress created the TV Converter Box Coupon Program for households wishing to keep using their analog TV sets after the transition date. The program allows households to obtain up to two coupons, each worth $40, which can be applied toward the cost of eligible converter boxes.
A TV connected to cable, satellite, or other pay-TV service does not require a TV converter box. Consumers have a variety of options.  Options to explore include:
Keep your existing analog TV and purchase a TV converter box. A converter box plugs into your TV and will keep it working after Feb. 17, 2009, or
Connect to cable, satellite or other pay service, or
Purchase a television with a digital tuner.

Dear Friends, Neighbors and Supporters,

September is here, and we have much to look forward to this autumn. For starters a special "shop-til-you-drop" shopping trip to Westfield Field Mall (UTC) is planned on our DMCC shuttle bus Friday, September 5 from 9 am to 12:30 pm. Reserve your seat now by calling 792-7565.

Please join us at "Bella Luna", our annual fundraiser, Thursday, September 18 from 5:30 - 9:30 pm at the Powerhouse Community Center honoring our founder and past President, Nancy Weare. Partygoers will be treated to an Italian buffet dinner, dancing and silent and live auctions. This is your opportunity to come out and celebrate our wonderful community!

We are pleased to start a free 8-week, once-a-week, health education discussion group later this month, with topics such as alternative therapies, medicines and supplements, pain management, prevention and reversal of heart disease, end of life care, and many others. The discussions will be led by local Del Mar physician, Mark Kalina, who specializes in internal medicine with an emphasis on geriatrics. We will notify everyone as soon as all the details are worked out.

We have also begun a series of small neighborhood discussion groups, Senior Living Options, a program focused on the concerns of Del Mar seniors and their adult children regarding options for living comfortably as we continue to age. This program is designed to continue the creation of networks and also provide DMCC with ideas about how we may best serve you. If you would like to participate in one of these discussions, please call the office at 792-7565 and let us know who you are and where you live!

The flu shot schedule is filling quickly so if you have not already done so, remember to call and make your appointment for a flu and pneumonia shot at our annual Clinic Wednesday, October 8th from 9 am to 3 pm at the City Hall Annex. Send an email request with a first and second appointment choice to dmcc@dmcc.cc and we will respond in 24 hours. You can also call 792-7565 to reserve your appointment.

Warmest regards,
Shirley King, President

California offers a property tax postponement for seniors program.  Here is how it works:
The Property Tax Postponement Program allows eligible homeowners to postpone payment of part or all of the property taxes on their residence. To participate in this program, the homeowner must complete a claim form and submit it to the State Controller's Office. The claim form must be filed each year the individual desires to have the property taxes postponed. Upon approval of the claim, the State Controller's Office will mail Certificates of Eligibility to the homeowner. The homeowner must mail or take the Certificates of Eligibility to the county tax collector's office to postpone the property taxes due.
