Do You Play Chess?
DMCC has been contacted by a 15 year-old male whose grandparents live out of the country.  He has a great fondness for elders and misses his grandparents terribly.  To fill that void, he would like to volunteer to play chess with any senior who might wish to challenge him.  Finding a chess partner for this young man has been a challenge!  If you are a chess player and would like to take advantage of this offer, please contact the DMCC office at 858-792-7565 so we may put you in contact with one another.

Food Donations Needed
The current economic situation is creating growing demand for emergency housing and shelter for many people.  Along with shelter is the need for non-perishable food items such as canned fruits and vegetables, pasta meals with meat, jams and jellies.  Please drop off your food donations at the DMCC office and we will ensure they get to the needy families served by Interfaith Community Services.  Deadline for drop-offs is Tuesday, August 12th.
AARP Safe Driver Course
AARP is offering their Safe Driver Class at St. Peter's Parrish Hall on August 18 and 25 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Fee is $10. Attendance is required on both dates.  Register with St. Peter's at (858) 755-1616.
Tips to Stay Cool

Schedule outside activities in the early mornings or in the evening.
Use wet washcloths to pat the wrists, face and back of neck or wrap ice cubes in a washcloth for a quick cool-down.
Light colors reflect the heat. Wear lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing.
Eat lightly and drink plenty of fluids. Avoid caffeine and alcoholic beverages to help prevent dehydration.
Keep shades down and blinds closed, but windows slightly open, if safe.
A shady spot outdoors may be cooler than the house; especially if there is a breeze.
Visit a Cool Zone location. See "Beat the Heat" for details.
Use small battery operated, hand-held fans and misters for a cooling break.
DMCC has FREE hand held fans to give away; stop by the DMCC office to pick up yours!

Dear Friends, Neighbors and Supporters,

Coming this fall will be a series of Tai Chi classes. Tai Chi is described as "meditation in motion" known to improve balance, coordination and flexibility. These classes will be offered in Powerhouse Park, one of our precious green spaces. Watch for the notice in the September Sandpiper.

Our bus will be going to the La Jolla Village movie theaters (Landmark and AMC) the second Saturday afternoon of each month. The group departure time will be determined by your movie choices. Generally we will target the first show of the day at Landmark and the second show of the day at AMC. Call the office at 792-7565 to sign up.

Our Flu and Pneumonia Vaccination Clinic is scheduled for Wednesday, October 8th from 9 am to 3 pm at the City Hall Annex. Shots are free for Medicare B recipients and Medicare A recipients with Aetna. Flu shots for all other Medicare A recipients are $30; pneumonia shots are $40. Health Net and Blue Cross will reimburse their recipients. We will have the paperwork for your reimbursement. Send an e-mail request for your appointment to dmcc@dmcc.cc. Specify a first and second choice. We will respond within 24 hours. You can also call 792-7565 to reserve your appointment.

Our annual fundraiser is Thursday, September 18th, 5:30 pm when we will be honoring Nancy Weare, our Founder and past President. In addition to a buffet Italian supper, silent and live auctions at the Powerhouse, a Circle of Honor will present a heart-warming tribute to Nancy and to our first Jerry Finnell Volunteer of the Year. Please join us for this occasion to celebrate the gifts of our community.

Until next month,
Shirley King
President
Is a Stimulus Check Waiting for You?
The federal government is still waiting for many eligible seniors to file their 2007 income taxes so they can receive their stimulus rebate check.  Many seniors with limited means don't usually file a federal tax return, but they must do that for 2007 in order to receive their payment under the economic stimulus package.  This includes seniors who rely primarily on Social Security; they are eligible to receive $300 per individual or $600 per couple.  Individuals need only have a yearly income of $3,000 to qualify.

The IRS is sending letters to those believed to be eligible.
The process to file is not complicated; the form has just a couple of lines to fill out.  There is help through AARP's Tax-Aide program (619) 641-7020 (call Tuesdays though Fridays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.).

Seniors have until October 15 to file if they want to get the stimulus check this calendar year.  They can claim it later than October 15, but they will not receive the check until 2009.

Cool Zones Help You Beat the Heat
Many seniors don't realize they are more susceptible to the effects of heat than younger people.cool zone They can be in crisis and not even know it because seniors often don't start sweating until their temperture has already soared. This is especially true if they have any diseases that cause poor circulation. Different medications can also affect the body's ability to cool down.

SDGE and San Diego County are collaborating for their 8th year offering the Cool Zone program. The goal of the program is to educate older adults on how to avoid succumbing to the summer heat. One of the ways is to spend the hottest part of the day in a cool place. The Del Mar Library at 1309 Camino Del Mar is a designated Cool Zone. Cool Zones help seniors avoid heat stroke and other heat-related problems, and also help them to save money by not using their own air conditioners or fans. The community benefits, as well, by decreasing the risk of power blackouts caused by high-usage levels at the same time.

So help save energy and enjoy a cool place with fun activities by visiting a Cool Zone. Click on the "Cool Zones" icon to find other Cool Zone locations.
