MATTER OF BALANCE
mob logoJuly 2 - August 20
During this 8 week, 2-hour program, participants will learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance.  Classes are held Wednesdays, 1 to 3 pm at St. Peter's Parish Hall, 334 14th Street, Del Mar.  Call 858-792-6575 for more information or to reserve your spot!
SPECIAL REQUEST
Food Donations
DMCC is a Project CARE partner with Aging and Independent Services, a partner in North County providing short and longer term housing for senior men and women with mental illnesses and veterans, needs donations of canned goods such as fruits and vegetables, pasta meals, jams and jellies.  Our drop-off deadline is July 9th.  Please bring your donations to our office.

PLEASE VOLUNTEER!
Bus Hosts and Volunteer Drivers Always Needed
Each Wednesday and Thursday, we staff the DMCC bus with a Bus Host, not only to help our senior shoppers load and unload their purchases, but also to assist the driver in making pick ups more expedient and to make announcements to the riders about upcoming DMCC events.  New hosts are always needed.

We also have need for volunteer drivers who are willing to use their own cars to drive other city residents who can no longer drive to their medical appointments.

If either of these sounds like a volunteer opportunity that would interest you, please call us at 858-792-7565 or email heather@dmcc.cc.
DIAL-A-RIDE
Taxi Vouchers
are now available through DMCC for purchase for seniors over age 62 and residents with special needs who live within the Del Mar city limits.  Call 858-792-7565 for details.

THANK YOU!

luncheon

A hearty "Thank You!" to all who made our Annual Potluck Salad Luncheon a success this year!  It was especially fun with the addition of our adorable adoptable four-legged friends brought to us compliments of the North County Humane Society.  We're happy to announce that since the luncheon, both dogs have found new homes.  Thanks, too, to all our lovely models and to our generous sponsors - the North County Humane Society, Chico's Fashions, Dexter's Deli, Pacifica Del Mar Restaurant, O'Brien's Boulangerie, St. Peters, and our wonderful family of volunteers....it wouldn't have been possible without you!  Let's see how we top this next year!

Dear Friends, Neighbors and Supporters,

I am very honored to announce that our new Program Manager is Heather Glenn.  She comes to us with a breadth of experiences with public and government agencies.  She is a master of operational technologies, and she has a very prolific green thumb.  She replaces Leah Lubinski who has become an assistant volunteer coordinator for the local American Red Cross. Please stop by the office to meet Heather and enjoy a chat with her.

I encourage you to join our Matter of Balance program series this summer - the orientation session is Wed. June 25th, 1 pm at St. Peter's Parish Hall.  This free program of eight two-hour sessions developed at the Roybal Center at Boston University is presented by Aging and Independence Services.  During the eight sessions participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable; set realistic goals to increase activity; change their environment to reduce fall risk factors; and exercise to increase strength and balance.  After having fallen in my backyard this weekend while pulling a trash can of biomass, I am reminded that falls have very involved consequences.

A new online caregiving resource tool that I have discovered is the Family Care Navigator (http://caregiver.org/caregiver) developed by the Family Caregiver Alliance's National Center on Caregiving. This state-by-state resource is intended to help you locate government, nonprofit, and private programs in your area. It includes services for family caregivers, as well as resources for older or disabled adults living at home or in a residential facility. It also includes information on government health and disability programs, legal resources, disease-specific organizations and much more.

Another important local caregiving resource is the Legacy Corps, which has just expanded to North San Diego County. Legacy Corps San Diego is a nationally recognized and award winning program that unites generations in providing free respite care to caregivers. Please call John Scholte of Aging and Independence Services at 619-253-5155 if you want more information about receiving respite services or joining the volunteer training program.

Until next month!

Warmly,
Shirley King

SHARED HOUSING PROGRAM
Calling All Homeowners!
Did you know that DMCC administers a Shared Housing Program which matches quality housemates with Del Mar homeowners who are willing to share their homes?

The Shared Housing Program can provide an excellent opportunity for Home Providers who wish to receive a bit of income from rent or some help with daily needs such as grocery shopping, housework, cooking and the like, in exchange for providing a place to live.  We arrange safe and convenient interviews between Home Providers and pre-screened home seekers.  Every effort is made to find a compatible match for you.  No one is placed until you have met and fully approved the individual.

If you are a Del Mar homeowner with an extra room or separate unit to exchange for rent and/or services, we would love to hear from you!  You can complete a Home Provider Application at http://www.dmcc.cc/shared-homeprovider.shtml or call DMCC at 858-792-7565 to learn more about the program.
