Wine of the Month
Once again, I have to make this the winery of the month. Otherwise I'd have to mention too many wines. They all belong to Luna Rossa and their wine maker Paolo D'Andrea. I've been enjoying these wines for a couple of years at festivals, but never had the chance to go south and visit the winery. Oh boy, if you like Italian-styled wines that are big, earthy and loaded with fruit, have I got the winery for you!
If I had to single out one of these, it would be the 2004 Barbera. A good Barbera is always a very drinkable and food-friendly wine. This one delivers. It was so good I forgot to spit. Well, if you sample eight reds here as I did, a spit bucket is a good idea. My tour of the Shenandoah Valley did not turn up any Barbera that topped this one, and if you know the wines of that region, you know it's a high complement.
I also recommend the 2005 Merlot, 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005 Tempranillo, the 2006 Refosco, the 2005 Petit Sirah, and of course, the Nini Italian Blend. Oops, I mentioned them anyway. Like I said, wine maker of the month. If your favorite wine store doesn't carry some of these wines, check out their website | |

Not Really Goodbye
After two years of writing about the wines of New Mexico and the world, my monthly column did not appear in the Food Section of the Albuquerque Journal this week. Because of a snafu during the transitioning of the section from Carolyn Flynn's editorship to Gayle Geiss-O'Dowd's editorship, my good-bye column has not yet run. While I am hoping to remedy this in the next month or so, I wanted to let you know what has been happening. Gayle has decided to rework the Food Section, and a part of that rework is replacing my local column with a genaric wine column deom out of state. Not my idea of the best way to keep New Mexicans informed on wine, but then, I'm not the food editor. Although I won't be writing a wine column for the Journal, I have had my contract extended, and I am looking forward to writing some specials over the next year. In addition, I regularly contribute to my Southwestern Wine Guy blog (Southwesternwineguy.blogspot.com) and my monthly newsletter. On other fronts, I am actively marketing my book, Wines of Enchantment; I am planning a radio show that should debut in the next few months, partnering with a nationally-known chef; I'm in discussion with several local and regional publications for providing regular commentary on wines and the wine business; and I have a growing schedule of wine talks and wine dinners through my Wine Maestro endeavors. I'll stay in touch and continue with my passion of seeking out what's new, interesting and tasty in the world of wine. And, if you are a reader of the Albuquerque Journal andhave thoughts on the new format you can reach the new food editor, Gayle Geiss-O'Dowd at (ggeiss@abqjournal.com) .
