Welcome |
Eric Phelps, Director, Grinspoon Institute for Jewish Philanthropy
It has been a very exciting month at the Grinspoon Institute for Jewish Philanthropy. Among the many milestones, we are delighted to report that camps participating in the current match programs have collectively raised more than $2.5 million since the beginning of 2010. This money has been matched with $520,000 from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, bringing the total to more than $3 million for Create Your Match 3 and Meet Your Match 4 - kol kavod to all of the participating camps!
We recently held our third Create a Jewish Legacy training in Longmeadow, MA for the 12 camps in enrolled Cohort 3. The training, led by Gail Littman and David Sharken, was attended by 40 lay leaders and staff professionals from throughout North America. Many thanks to all who participated for their enthusiastic participation in this program. For more information about Legacy, read the article below about connecting the Legacy Program with Jewish Values.
We welcome Dan Kirsch as a new mentor/consultant to the GIJP Team. Dan has devoted his career to improving the leadership, fundraising, and operating capacity of mission-driven organizations. Dan and his wife Suzanne (a proud former counselor at a Jewish overnight camp) live with their two young sons Benjamin and Elijah (future campers!) in Florence, MA. Read more about Dan's background on our website.
Finally, please save the date of November 21-22, 2010 for the Grinspoon Institute's 9th Camp Conference. We will be gathering at the Sheraton in Springfield, MA - a move that enables us to host an additional 150 lay leaders, camp professionals and philanthropists this year.
Best wishes for a wonderful winter season and Chag Purim Sameach!

Connecting Legacy with Jewish Values |
|
By GIJP Mentor David Sharken The Grinspoon Institute is now working with 31 camps to create and sustain a legacy program as an integral component of an overall fundraising strategy. What we often miss in the daily challenges of management, governance and fundraising is the connection of these activities to Jewish values. Carol Karsch, the long time executive director of the Jewish Community Foundation of Southern Arizona, has written an essay which provides a spiritual container for our planned giving work. She reminds us that Jewish values are at the core of these efforts and our Judaic traditions are reflected in the way we build trusted donor relations, our appreciation and consideration for family as well as the strength of the partnership between professionals and lay leaders. Enjoy Carol's essay and share it with your other leaders - a wonderful window on how we can incorporate Jewish teachings to carry our organizations to future financial health. |
Leveraging Your Donor Database for Legacy Gifts...and More. |
|
By Kevin Martone, GIJP Technology Program Manager
The GIJP Technology Program Team has worked with David Sharken to develop recommended changes to an organization's donor management system to effectively track and report on Legacy Program prospects, pledges, and gifts. The resulting document includes general recommendations that can be used for ANY donor management system, as well as specific changes for those camps using DonorPerfect Online (DPO). (Remember that the Tech Team is available to help you implement these changes in DPO.)

Resource of the Month - Making Your Planned Giving Newsletter Memorable |
| Are the Newsletters you send out to your Legacy Program prospects and donors boring? Morbid? Too technical? Is your audience tuning your Newsletters out?
Take a look at this presentation about Planned Giving Newsletters by nonprofit marketing consultant Kivi Leroux Miller to learn how to make your Newsletters memorable. (Hint: everyone remembers snack-size stories that resonate personally.) This presentation offers great concepts for storytelling...even if you are not currently preparing a Newsletter. |
