Donor Management Systems
Core to a nonprofit organization's fundraising and outreach efforts is a Donor Management System (DMS). With appropriate personnel and processes in place to effectively manage the system, a DMS can make processes for communicating effectively with your constituents (with up to date contact information!) much more streamlined and accurate.

Every organization is different, so it's difficult to recommend one particular DMS for everyone. Instead, the Technology Program has reviewed a handful of DMS that may fit your organization's needs (and budget). Click here to read our reviews of these systems on our website...

Eric Phelps
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce our new eNewsletter format, which you will see next month. After 15 "issues," this is our final Technology Program-focused eNewsletter. It has served us well, disseminating important news and tips re: utilizing technology effectively for alumni outreach and fundraising. This issue is no exception, alerting you to our research on Donor Management Systems, registering to solicit funds in various states, and considering the possible death of the website.

However, we realize that GIJP can use the eNewsletter format more effectively to share information in ALL of the key areas GIJP works in: Fundraising, Strategic Planning, and Governance, in addition to Technology. So, next month you'll see less of a focus on technology, but - hopefully - the same quality information you've come to expect from the Institute.

Please contact me if you have any suggestions for improving the eNewsletter and any of our other services.

B'Shalom,
Eric
Tip of the Month - Solicitation Registration for Nonprofits
Did you hear that the IRS has redesigned the Form 990 that all registered 501c(3) organizations are required to submit each year? The changes are meant to ensure more transparency and help reduce the filing burden on (most) nonprofits.

One of the big changes in the new 990 is the inclusion of two questions explicitly asking you about your organization's compliance with laws that require nonprofits to register with each state where they solicit funds. The definition of "soliciting," the steps required to register, and the cost of registration differs by each state, so the process can be very confusing.

Have you registered your organization to solicit funds both online and off? Tell us about it! We are sure that others can learn from your experiences.
This Month's Q&A - Do we need a website anymore?
Question: We have a thriving Facebook Page with hundreds of Fans who upload photos and have discussions with the organization and each other online. Meanwhile, our website is very difficult to update and is getting fewer and fewer hits. Do we even need our traditional website anymore?

Answer: First of all, it's great that you've managed to engage your constituents on Facebook (or any social media site). It sounds like you are using those tools effectively to reconnect and communicate with your alumni, prospects, donors, and other constituents.

Secondly, this is a valid question that has been raised by many in the nonprofit world, especially those focusing on social media.

Our short answer? The traditional website is far from dead. It is still the best way to communicate basic information in an easy-to-navigate format. And there are still some users who are not (and may never be) members of Facebook. So keep that website updated, but continue to cultivate your users on Facebook as well.

For a more detailed response to this question, check out the blog post on our website...
