February 2010 Meeting
The Benefits of Real-Time SPC by Joe DeSimone Location: Maddox, 1900 S Hwy 89, Perry Date: February 11, 2010 Time: Dinner: 6pm, Presentation: 7pm - 8:30pm
Every company wants to increase profitability. Most companies realize that improving product quality will increase customer satisfaction and reduce costs. Which leads to higher customer retention rates, decreased manufacturing costs and higher profitability. For decades Quality Gurus have instructed companies to implement SPC, Lean Manufacturing and now Six Sigma.
Now companies are looking at their quality investments and asking, "Where are the benefits? We are using SPC and Lean Manufacturing Tools, but sales are down, profits are down and we may need to lay off employees." There's a fundamental question we ask every company. "How many bad parts do you make, before you know you are making bad parts"? There is a quantum difference between Real-Time SPC and "after-the-fact" SPC. Real-time SPC allows operators and managers to make real-time decisions, to prevent production of bad parts. Using real-time SPC they can take preventive actions, to insure the process stays in control. When the process remains in control and the process parameters are well within the customer's specifications, then you can reap the full benefits of SPC.

Hello : |
Congratulations to all of the members who participated in the CQA and CQE exam prep classes this past Fall. Although not all passed the exam, the effort and time people put in to advance their skills and knowledge is to be commended. See the list for those that were able to pass the exam and congratulate them when you see them. For those that didn't pass, I say "Don't give up". You'll have another opportunity to take the exam in June and since the class included a year's worth of online access to the classes, you'll be ready. If you took the CQE, get with John to see if he can provide access to more reliability training, since the exam ended up being more heavy on that than anticipated. A call for nominations for next year's elected positions went out last month. In essence, we didn't get any volunteers. I ask that each of you at least consider how you might be able to help the section. Some positions on the Section Leadership Committee (SLC) do take a bit of time. Others, however, take very little time, but are crucial to the ongoing success of the section. Get involved if you can. We never ask for more than you can do (okay, maybe I did twist a few arms and use my begging skills once or twice). The section needs more volunteers. The more we do for the membership, the more time it takes. If you've been fortunate enough to be able to take advantage of some of the membership offerings, try to give back a little by volunteering in some small way. We need you and would appreciate any help you can offer. And, don't forget the benefits. Extra recertification units, free dinners at SLC meetings, the chance to attend the World Conference at no cost, etc. Please get a hold of Paul Harbath, next year's Chair, if you would like to volunteer.
