Moore Farms
Weekly Newsletter

We were so happy to see our good friends Wes and Charlotte Swancey won this year's Best CSA in Atlanta from Creative Loafing's reader vote! We were surprised and honored to win in 2010 and 2011 and we're thrilled that Riverview Farms has received the recognition. We work closely with them along with so many farmers in our region and we all do such good work. Congratulations, Wes and Charlotte, bravo, yay and cheers!

We had a disappointment this week when the Green Beans we were expecting were a no-show. It is pretty rare that the featured vegetable in our Newsletter Recipe doesn't arrive! Apologies to everyone who was looking forward to them, if you ordered Beans as an add-on or a Custom Choice item we'll note your account to replace in or credit to your next order. We were able to get Sweet Potatoes in for Farmer's Pick Orders as a replacement item and check out the great Member Recipe below that happened to come our way just in time!

The Turkeys are Coming!

TURKEY RESERVATIONS are now open! We just got word from the fine folks at Goose Pond Farm so we're opening up reservations on our Online Market (you can reserve even when the rest of the Online Market is closed). These happy Turkeys are white broad-breasted pasture-raised with absolutely no chemicals/hormones/yucky stuff. You will need to place a $50 deposit and the balance is due when you pickup your bird at Moore Farms on Saturday November 17th (sorry, Turkeys cannot be delivered to Atlanta!). Weights average 16 pounds but we will have some smaller and some larger. This is the very best tasting Turkey we have ever put in our mouth, the centerpiece of our Holiday Feast. Be sure to get yours reserved!

NEW PICKUP LOCATION in Birmingham

For several months now we have been partnered with Freshfully.com to offer a basic $25 Produce Box in the Birmingham area. We have now added St Vincent's One Nineteen Wellness Center to our Online Market for deliveries as well as linking directly to Freshfully.com as on option for Birmingham folks to order our Good Food boxes through them. Check out the details on our Pickup Locations page. Also Wright Dairy pickups in Alexandria, AL re-start again next week! They have renovated their dairy equipment and are ramping up milk production now that all of their girls are back home.

*PICKUP LOCATION ALERTS*

We have two Atlanta area sites that have been pretty low on orders for a bit now:

Harry's Farmers Market in Marietta this is your second heads-up! We really need to get it going up there if you all want us to keep delivering. Spread the word with your friends and let us know you want us to stay by placing your order!

Stone Mountain Village has slowed up quite a bit: we really need a minimum of 10 orders per week just to cover delivery costs (we don't add delivery fees when gas prices go up!). Stone Mountain Village let us hear from you and we are planning to come on out for The Village Corner's Octoberfest on 10/13/2012 to meet and greet everyone over there!

Moore Farms Work Day: Saturday October 27th 2012

We have another date on the calendar now for folks who want to come out and have a fun day working with us on the farm! You can arrive on Friday afternoon/evening or Saturday morning and we'll work from 9am (Eastern time) to 5pm with a fabulous farm lunch. We have jobs for all levels of ability so no worries there, we have a good time and get some big jobs done working together on our beautiful farm. We do need to know how many to expect so please be sure to RSVP if you're planning to come out (don't just show up!), if you're going to camp Friday/Saturday night and if you have any food allergies or preferences.

RSVP by phone 256-449-9417 or email farm@moorefarmsandfriends.com

We have just added a bunch of Upcoming Events

to our website, check it out!

Fall Investment Membership Incentive It's that time of year again, each season we offer an extra reason to become an Online Market Investment Member. Depending on your level of Investment ($500-$5,000) you will enjoy a healthy and delicious return (3% - 7%), a Thank You Goodie Bag and Investment Members get two-for-one price for on-farm events. By essentially pre-paying for your orders (our average Member spends $1250 per year on our Online Market) you won't have to enter your credit card every time (yay!) and your support helps us to get some big jobs done. Plans for this Fall include the last phase of expansion on our Packing Shed, adding a bathroom to the intern Corncrib Cabin and the start of our Barn Conversion to make a big new event space. Other Members have noted that they can get miles/points on their credit card as another reason to invest. (If you would like to use PayPal or mail a check we can set that up for you, too.) For our Fall Incentive we'll give our new and renewing Investment Members a $50 Online Market Gift Certificate which you can use yourself or give as a gift or donate for a fundraising event (offer ends October 30th). Cool, huh? Check out the details here and consider becoming an Investor today!

Sweet Potato Pound Cake

Since the Green Beans were a no-show we are sharing this recipe from www.allrecipes.com sent in from Sasha Johns of our new Mt Laurel Pickup Location. Thanks, Sasha!

1 cup butter, softened

2 cups white sugar

2 cups cooked and mashed sweet potatoes

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

4 eggs

3 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup sifted confectioners' sugar

5 teaspoons orange juice

2 tablespoons grated orange zest

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 10 inch tube pan. Sift together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, nutmeg and salt. Set aside.

2. In large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add mashed sweet potatoes and vanilla. Beat until well blended. Add eggs, one at a time (the batter will look curdled). Add flour mixture to potato mixture. Beat on low until combined.

3. Pour batter into 10 inch tube pan. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for about 1 hour and 20 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick inserted into cake comes out clean. Cool cake for 20 minutes in the pan, then invert onto serving plate.

4. To make the glaze: in a small bowl, combine confectioners sugar with 3 to 5 teaspoons orange juice to achieve drizzling consistency. Spoon over warm cake and sprinkle with orange zest if desired.

FIELD OF GREENS 2012

This is normally a not-to-be-missed date for us but this year we have a family event so we won't be able to go. However, we really want to encourage our Members to enjoy this truly wonderful day on the farm so we have two adult tickets as a giveaway: Congratulations to Member Julie Powell, she won our drawing!
We had a great number of folks who entered the drawing, we really hope you all go out for this great day and have a bunch of fun for us!
(Click on the image above for event information.)

Call, Ya'll!
Just a reminder to everyone: if you ever have a problem with your order on pickup day such as you can't find your Box, can't find your Cooler Items, can't find your Pickup Location, etc., you need to CALL us so we can help you!

We will not get any email or text until a couple of days later (after the orders are out the door we are back to farm work!) so you need to call us on our cell number: 256-282-7889

We work very hard to be sure everything is right with your order and we want you to get it and enjoy our good food. Our triple-check system means that we rarely miss an order. Common problems are: Members choose the wrong Pickup Location on the order (be sure to check your Order Confirmation!); order does not complete so it doesn't ever get to us (be sure to look for your Order Confirmation!); or sometimes someone picks up the wrong order (we can usually solve the mystery very quickly similar names, etc.). Also please remember, folks at the Pickup Locations are very kindly hosting for us, they do not have information about our orders so please be polite and respectful of their businesses and call us directly if there is ever a problem so we can help. Cheers!!

Our Newsletters only go out to Active Members who have an account with Moore Farms and Friends. They contain important program information as well as recipes and coming events.
