OK, so this week we were all prepared and ready for Strawberries with the pint
Sweet Pea and her brother Buddy had a great time wrestling in the sunshine on Wednesday. We're back up to 67 for a high temp again this week, yay, yippee and yahoo!
clamshells but the problem was the Berries were not good. The recent weather in Florida have taken their toll on them (the plants suck up all the rain and the berries that are ready to pick just turn to mush). We were hoping right up to the last minute that we would get the next scheduled delivery of the next flush of Strawberries. Looks like we just missed the boat for this week, such a disappointment!! If you had them in your $30 Farmer's Pick Order we substituted with Grape Tomatoes (see our killer recipe below: an easy way to enjoy these Roasted!). For Custom Choice Orders we will note your account and replace them or credit your next order automatically. If you had a Brunch Package we added a Grapefruit and will also replace/credit the pint of Strawberries in your next order. So sorry to everyone eagerly awaiting these delicious Spring treats, we were thrilled with them last week and just hated that we didn't have them after all for this week. By the way, thank you so much to all of the Members who reported back to us about our impromptu Strawberry packaging last week: we were so glad to know that they arrived happy and intact, we really appreciate your feedback!
We don't put out a lot of stuff to our Members about petitions but this one is REALLY IMPORTANT. The current issue is Genetically Engineered Salmon and our request for the USDA to label these products so we as food eaters can make a choice about whether we want to put it into our family's bodies (if we are what we eat what does Genetically Engineered Salmon do to us??? We simply do not know. -Laurie). Here is the basic blurb and we urge all of our Members who are so inclined to please take a moment out of your busy day to register your opinion about this VERY VERY IMPORTANT issue!
Alyssa and Garver tackling our Greenhouse Spring Cleaning getting ready to sow seed trays!
Our new Farm Manager Garver Akers arrived a couple of weeks ago and we have finally snapped a pic to introduce him to everyone. He and his wife Bonnie and their two kids Vidalia and Lumen will live and work here at Moore Farms this year and hopefully for many years to come. He will take the reins of the day-to-day farm operation, something Will and I have finally conceded that we simply can't do anymore (the Online Market program is at least a 3/4 time job for each of us!). Garver has terrific credentials having graduated from The Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems program in Santa Cruz, California. He has put in a few year's of hands-on experience with different farms and community garden projects. . . we consider ourselves extremely lucky that he came on board with us! More on his family soon. . .
Alyssa Stearns is our newest WWOOF (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) Intern, she just arrived this weekend from Connecticut and will be with us through the middle of May. She is a bright, energetic young lady and we love her already! She has been working at a farm in Tennessee and another in Vermont and hopes to have her own operation one day.
