Moore Farms
Weekly Newsletter

Everything went pretty well for orders this week, we had more of the Sweet Peppers from Signal Mountain Farm so we added one or two into the Farmer's Pick boxes. The cold weather front coming in this week will likely knock out the last of the late Summer crops so we wanted to get the last of those good

Peppers out to everyone!

The change of seasons is such an exciting time of year for us: finishing one crop and preparing for the next is such a natural cycle for us and we feel such a synchronicity with Mother Nature. The mid-30's temps in the weather predictions are the final call for some of the late Summer vegetables that have been hanging in there and herald new harvests such as Jerusalem Artichokes, Pecans and Wild Persimmons. All of the Brassica family members just love the cooler weather so Kale, Chard, Turnips and other greens put on a lot of growth. Those of us who have Hoophouse or Greenhouse production have been preparing and planning for some time and the tender things like Spinach are coming along beautifully. Our wish is for us all to enjoy a long and gentle Fall Season this year.

Pre-order your Thanksgiving Turkeys now! Reservations for fresh Turkeys are made online and they must be picked up at Moore Farms only (NO DELIVERIES) see details on the Online Market and below. (You can place your Turkey Reservation Order even when the rest of the Online Market is closed: you will need to add the Custom Choice Fee but we will remove that when we process the Reservation order.)

Pickup Location Changes

Every quarter we analyze our delivery route to determine if we need to make any changes. Pickup Locations that have consistently had fewer than 10 orders for the previous few months are considered. Next week we will re-work our delivery route to maximize our time and delivery costs for our Atlanta sites. If your preferred site does not make the cut we apologize ahead of time! (We do state on our Questions and Answers page that Pickup Locations are subject to change.) It's a simple fact that we have to concentrate our resources in the areas where we have the most demand and Member support. Look for new Locations to be added as we confirm them, too!

At this time we are scrutinizing our Birmingham route week to week: we still have not seen a big increase so if you want us to keep delivering please order and help us spread the word!

Fresh Popped Corn

The Popcorn in this week's orders was grown for us by Brian Heatherington at Beech Creek Farms. We recommend the old-fashioned method using oil in a cooking pot with a lid.

1. Shell the Popcorn off of the cob in to a bowl. This is easily done, just use your thumbs and once you get them started they will all come off.

2. Heat 2 Tablespoons Vegetable or Peanut Oil in a soup pot (you need room for the kernels to pop!) on medium-high heat. When oil is hot add corn kernels and stir to coat with the oil.

3. Cover with a lid and agitate the pot regularly but not constantly so that the kernels don't burn.

4. When the corn starts to pop keep moving the pot around until pops slow to one every 4-5 seconds. Turn off heat and carefully lift the lid (steam will be released).

5. Seasonings: As food purists we like Sea Salt but almost anything goes! Try fresh cracked Black Pepper, Cayenne Pepper, Cinnamon Sugar, Curry, Butter or try using Bacon Fat instead of Oil. For best results season immediately and enjoy.
