Moore Farms
Orders This Week

2011 looks like a great year for Pecans! We moved our Poultry Yard at Moore Farms this year into the range of the root zone for one of our Native Pecans and the result of the good natural fertilizer from the Chickens, Ducks and Pigs have produced some of the best nuts we have seen in years. Newell Farms has lots of Native Pecans and Pecan Point Farm has a beautiful grove of several varieties. **We have noted allergy alerts on any accounts if you have notified us of Nut Allergies in your family: we will have Pecans in the Farmers Pick boxes at times this Fall so when you order if you have not already alerted us about an allergy please be sure to include a note in the Comments. Laurie's nephew has multiple severe food allergies so we are very aware of the issues and we pay attention to the Allergy notes on our Member's accounts!

Late Summer Harvests are winding down, we are hoping for another late frost this year but we'll have Tomatoes, Peppers, Squash, etc. as long as they are coming in. Load up in the next couple of weeks if you want to freeze some for Winter meals.

Be sure to check out our Fall Investment Membership Offer below, this is a terrific way to support our program, make ordering easier for you and enjoy a discount on our Online Market! This offer will be good through the end of October so check it out and consider investing in our local food system!

Helloooo, Birmingham Alabama Are You There?

We have been running our Friday route to Birmingham, Trussville, Pell City, Oxford and Alexandria for more than four months now and orders have been slow to sluggish at best. Are ya'll out there? Do you not want us to deliver to you? We have had almost no response to coupons, discounts and special offers. If you want us we need to know it. If not, we'll put our energies and resources toward the folks in Atlanta who are asking for new Pickup Locations. Call us, email us, place an order: let us know if you want us or not (we're listening!!).**Many thanks to quite a few folks who let us know how much you want us to keep delivering to these locations: we had a few more orders this week but we still need to see a big increase if we are going to be able to continue. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help you spread the word in your area!

Thank you so much to Members Donna Price and Stacy Holloway we'll add an extra goodie in your next order. Thank you to all of our Members who flatten and return their boxes so we can reuse them each week, we really appreciate your effort. Some Members suggest bringing a tote bag with you when you pick up and after removing the order items flattening and leaving the box at your Pickup Location. Please remember to flatten the boxes as a courtesy for our host sites!

Baked Acorn Squash with Pears

Indian Style Acorn Squash with Pears

This is a very satisfying vegetarian dish on the cooling Fall evenings. Add some Chicken or Pork if you are a meat eater or enjoy it as a Vegetarian meal for the week. In the picture above we prepared this for lunch on the farm and added some Sweet Peppers and threw the Squash Seeds in there, too. They got kind of roasty and really complimented the rest of the flavors!

Wash, trim and chop Acorn Squash into quarters then bit-sized chunks. Scoop out seeds. Season with Modern Day Masala Vegetable Gold or other seasonings of your choice. Note: The peels of all Winter Squash can be eaten when grown organically! They lend an additional nutty flavor, a nice texture and good fiber. Try it, you'll like it!

Wash, trim and chop two Keiffer Pears into chunks. Season as the Acorn Squash.

Drizzle Squash and Pears with Olive Oil, spread out onto a baking sheet and roast in a hot oven for 30-40 minutes or until tender and starting to brown. Allow to rest for 5-10 minutes.

Serve with rice (as above) or puree with a stick blender into a soup and serve with bread for a warm and filling Fall meal.
