Briggs students among those nominated for Goldwater and Udall Scholarships

Amy Pochodylo, a sophomore chemistry major and member of the Honors College has been nominated for a Goldwater Scholarship. The Goldwater Foundation seeks scholars committed to a career in science, mathematics, or engineering who display intellectual intensity and who have the potential for significant future contributions in their chosen field. The Scholarship provides a grant towards the last year or two of undergraduate tuition and living expenses for students who are planning careers in research.

Jenna Parker, a junior zoology major and member of the Honors College, has been nominated for a Udall Scholarship. This scholarship honors Arizona U.S. Congressman Morris K. Udall's legacy of public service by supporting students planning careers focused on the environment and Native American students planning careers in tribal health or public policy. The Udall Foundation annually awards $5,000 scholarships to 80 students throughout the U.S.

Giving Opportunity: Work Progressing on the Renovation of the West Lower Lounge

Lyman Briggs College has come a long way since being established as MSU's second residential college in 1967. Growth in enrollment has created a critical need for space to support the living/learning atmosphere that characterizes Briggs. Dean Elizabeth Simmons has announced plans to renovate the West Lower Lounge into:

  • 6 faculty offices to accommodate faculty presently located outside of Holmes Hall
  • Senior seminar/conference room
  • Student study and engagement area

Consider a gift in honor of a faculty member who you would like to see recognized on one of the new offices.

Gifts of any size are welcome. Special donor recognition opportunities are available for gifts of just $500 or more. For more information contact: mckean@msu.edu.

Bob Bayn ('72): Receives the gift of life from an unexpected place

Bob Bayn at Grandparents University 2009Recently, when Utah resident Bob Bayn posted on his Facebook page that he needed an O-positive kidney, an answer came from the most unexpected of places. Bayn, like all of his siblings and several of his maternal cousins, suffered from polysystic kidney disease, which eventually causes kidney failure.  It turns out that one of his former co-workers just happened to read the post and was O-positive.  She simply wrote back: How can I help? The decision to donate her kidney was not easy for Stacey Gomm to make, but after prayer and the support of her husband and children, she made the decision to go through with the surgery. Gomm and Bayn went through the surgery on December 17 at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah. Both are doing well and have been the subject of several local news stories on how they came to share this experience. LaDuca Group published in Crystal Growth and Design

LaDuca Group Crystal

This isn't the first recognition that the LaDuca Group has received for their research discoveries, but they are particularly excited to be published in the highest-ranked crystallography journal in the world. The Group is also proud to have as first author an African-American female LBC student.

The article is entitled: Zinc Pyromellitate Coordination Polymers with Bis(pyridylmethyl)-piperazine Tethers: A Rare Binodal Network and a New Simple Self-Penetrated Topology

The LaDuca group is a research collaboration between LBC Professor Robert LaDuca, Ph.D. and undergraduates in Lyman Briggs College and chemistry major undergraduates.  Their work involves investigation of synthesis and structural characterization of new inorganic/organic hybrid materials that may possess interesting optical, magnetic and gas-absorptive properties.  Over the past there years they have prepared nearly 100 new coordination polymers, many with never-before-seen and beautiful structures.

Passings: Dennis Fitzgerald ('72)

Nancy and Dennis Fitzgerald

LBC is sad to report that Dennis K. Fitzgerald died on February 27, 2011 after a short battle with cancer. Dennis and his wife Nancy had just visited MSU/LBC in October when Dennis served as Grand Marshall for the MSU Homecoming Parade. His visit included a lecture for Computer Science Engineering students. Dennis would later tell us just how much enjoyed this visit to MSU.

Dennis and Nancy both attended Lyman Briggs College as out-of-state students and met when Dennis offered to help Nancy with her calculus homework. Dennis graduated from Lyman Briggs and the Honors College in 1972 with a degree in Computer Science. He received his MS from the University of Maryland in 1980. As a computer scientist Dennis was able to have a long career working in the aerospace industry. In recognition of his distinguished professional service Dennis received a Silver Snoopy Award in 1986 and was chosen to be Grand Marshall for the MSU Homecoming Parade in 2010.

Last fall Dennis had some medical problems that eventually led to the diagnosis of cancer which proved to be quite aggressive. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers they will be asking for contributions to the Dennis Kirk Fitzgerald and Nancy Beadles Fitzgerald Spartan Scholarship Challenge (AFF0105). Dennis and Nancy were proud to establish this scholarship shortly before Dennis' death.

The panelists discussed the contribution of women to society in different fields and talked about the challenges that they encountered.

Michael Nelson, Ph.D. was recently interviewed by Lansing's CityPulse for a story title: The Green and the Black. The article discusses MSU's T.B. Simon Power Plant, the largest on-campus coal-burning power plant in the nation and one of the 500 largest coal plants in the nation. MSU is working to come up with a plan to replace the plant as environmental activists are pushing for a more immediate solution.

ConAgra Foods, Inc. supports student research

ConAgra/LBC popcorn researchScience of the foods you love - Through a partnership with ConAgra Foods, Inc. students in LB494 are learning about scientists in industry and writing research proposals just like academic scientists do. As in academia, the purpose of the research project is to convince the reader (here, your boss) that you have a research question worth answering and an experimental plan to answer that question. ConAgra Foods, Inc. has supplied the students with the materials and guidance they need to develop proposals on topics related to popcorn - with the goal being a better understanding of the dynamics of the popping process. In April, the students will visit ConAgra Foods in Omaha, NE to present the results of their research. Professor Jim Smith, Ph.D., who is teaching the class, has worked with ConAgra Foods scientists to refine the topics and help students learn and understand how scientific methods apply to real-world industry topics.
