Dutton Award for the student who exemplifies the ideals of the college and who has contributed significantly to improving the quality of science education. In announcing the award LBC Dean Elizabeth Simmons said: "Now 40 years since receiving the Dutton Award your receipt of this Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes that as a scholar, physician and psychiatrist you have achieved the highest level of professional accomplishment, while making a positive impact on science and society."
Elliott serves as Chief Psychiatrist and Medical Director for Children's Health Council (CHC) (Palo Alto, CA), a non-profit community-based institution that provides care for youth with mental health conditions and advances scientific understanding of how best to provide such care. Ken Earhart ('83) Named Director of CDC Global Disease Detection Center in India
Kenneth C. Earhart. M.D. has been named Director of the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) Global Disease Detection Center in New Delhi, India. The state-of-the-art laboratory is only the seventh set up by CDC globally. It is charged with monitoring deadly pathogens and viruses, outbreak information, coordinating responses, and supporting the World Health Organization's Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network.
The center is one of the direct results of President Obama's recent visit to India. A major focus for the laboratory will be zoonotic diseases. Approximately 75 percent of recently identified emerging infectious diseases affecting humans are diseases of animal origin. Additionally, 80 percent of pathogens with high potential for bioterrorism are zoonotic.

Philip Hillary ('01) Living His Dream at Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL
Each year millions of visitors come to Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL, so that they can have up-close encounters with exotic animals and take a safari through a 65-acre "Serengeti Plain." For most people this adventure lasts a day, but for Philip Hillary, who serves as a Manager of Zoological Operations for the park, every day is an adventure that has made his childhood dreams come true.
A native of Fremont, MI, and 2001 graduate of Michigan State University's Lyman Briggs College, Hillary manages the collections and care of the park's animals including: reptiles, fish, birds, insects (ectotherms) and macropods like kangaroos and wallabies. An average day might include tube feeding a flamingo chick, transporting kangaroos, or taking several of the animal "ambassadors" out as a part of Busch Garden's commitment to educating the public about the importance of protecting and preserving the natural environment.
