MSU/Lyman Briggs College awarded $25 million for NSF center to study evoution in action

Robert PennockLyman Briggs professor Dr. Robert Pennock is one of five Principal Investigators who was awarded a $25 million grant from the National Science Foundation to establish BEACON, an interdisciplinary science and technology center to study evolution in action in both natural and virtual settings. BEACON is short for  "Bio/computational Evolution in Action CONsortium".  In addition to being on the BEACON Executive Committee, Pennock will co-direct one of the three research thrust groups that will focus on the evolution of behavior and intelligence, and also help direct education and outreach efforts.  BEACON includes thirty-five other senior personnel from across the university, including LBC associate professor Jim Smith who will be involved in evolution education research.  The grant builds in part on some of Dr. Pennock's earlier research that used digital evolution to investigate the evolution of intelligent behavior, and on his Avida-ED project, which developed an educational platform that allows students to do experimental evolution using populations of digital organisms.

Briggs students already participate in this research and BEACON will open up new opportunities for other students and faculty in MSU's College of Engineering, College of Natural Science, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Lyman Briggs College. BEACON is a consortium of universities led by Michigan State University with partner institutions of North Carolina A&T State University, the University of Idaho, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Washington.

Briggs Students: Continuing A Tradition of Excellence
Michael MoranMichael Moran: He recently spent two (simulated) weeks on Mars.  Ever since Michael Moran was a child he would gaze up at the stars dreaming about being an astronaut.  Recently, Moran was chosen to be a Crew Astronomer aboard the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS), a particular honor because he was the only undergraduate member of the crew. Located in the San Rafael Swell of Utah, the MDRS is a project of the Mars Society designed to develop key knowledge needed to prepare for the eventual human exploration of Mars. Crews abandon their earthly home to spend two weeks in a simulated harsh Martian environment complete with space suits, air recycling packs, Platypus water packs, and a radio. More about the Martian experience >>>

Anthony Watkins, Jr.Anthony Watkins, Jr.: Recipient of the new Dr. Ronald C. Hamelink Scholarship.
Receiving a scholarship in honor of Michigan State University's first 4.0 graduate might be intimidating for some, but Anthony Watkins sees it as a tremendous opportunity - one he may not have had if it were not for this financial aid.  Watkins has met the challenge by having a nearly perfect 3.96 grade point average semester. That's no small feat given that Watkins is maintaining an ambitious class load as an Animal Science major in Lyman Briggs College at Michigan State University. Ever since he was a child he has dreamed of become a veterinarian. Maybe it is his cat Scout, or all those episodes of Animal Planet where he watched life-saving animal surgeries, but it has helped to motivate him to excel in his science classes.  "I get squeamish when I see surgeries performed on people, but I never felt that way when I watch animal surgeries," says Watkins. More about Anthony's journey >>>

Anthony CracoliciVincent Cracolici: The first recipient of the Mary Margaret Schroth Scholarship. When you meet Vincent Cracolici it's easy to understand why Mary Schroth decided that she wanted to establish a scholarship at Lyman Briggs College (LBC) at Michigan State University.  They both share a passion for education, service and Michigan State University.  Cracolici, a junior majoring in zoology, is just one of Schroth's many "favorite" BCAMSC students who are now attending LBC, a residential college for the study of science in the context of society.  Schroth is a lifelong Spartan, a 1981 graduate of both LBC and the MSU Honors College, and a mathematics specialist at the Battle Creek Area Mathematics and Science Center (BCAMSC).  Schroth is passionate about teaching and has a deep appreciation for the education she received at MSU. Her affection for her students and desire for them to experience excellence in undergraduate education led her to establish the Mary Margaret Schroth Scholarship. More about Vincent >>>

Giving to Briggs - Investing in Education and the Spartan 'Can Do' Spirit.

Spartan Scholarship Challenge

Michigan State University has issued a unique challenge for alumni, donors and friends designed to make the most of scholarship gifts and dramatically increase the amount of aid available to MSU students in need.

The Spartan Scholarship Challenge, which leverages a $7 million anonymous gift to MSU that recently made national news, seeks to generate $21 million in need and performance-based financial assistance for undergraduate students. The initiative, available only until Dec. 31, 2010, maximizes donors' gifts through a $1 match for every $2 in new endowed scholarships.

Donors who make a commitment of $20,000 or more will have the opportunity to create a permanent scholarship in their name or the name of someone they wish to honor. Commitments to the challenge can be paid over a period of five years or less. Smaller gifts can be directed to a university-wide Spartan Scholarship Challenge Endowment.

Unlike funds that are expendable, endowed funds have a lasting effect because the total amount of the gift is invested. Only a portion of the invested income earned is spent each year, preserving the principal.

Individuals interested in participating in the Spartan Scholarship Challenge can call Dan McKean, Office of Development & Alumni Relations at (517) 353-4869 or email:
mckean@msu.edu.
