Commencement Return To Lyman Briggs College

Congratulations to the LBC Class of 2009!
Lyman Briggs College celebrated its first commencement ceremony since the return of college status. 184 graduates and their families attended the ceremony which was held on Saturday, May 9th in MSU's Auditorium. Also in attendance was one time Briggsie and now MSU Provost Kim Wilcox, who was proclaimed an honorary Briggsie by Dean Elizabeth Simmons. The Honorable Dianne Byrum, representing the MSU Board of Trustees, congratulated Briggs on the return of college status and expressed best wishes to all of the graduates. Several students were recognized for achieving special awards including 3 Briggsies who were among just 15 MSU students honored with the MSU Board of Trustees Scholarship Award and Stephanie Dawes, who was presented with a MSU Featherstone Award. We were also honored to have all three of the 2009 LBC Distinguished Alumni Award winners, and many other distinguished platform guests.
Although the official pictures had not been received at the date of this newsletter, you can view the latest photos and news as they are made available at the LBC Alumni Online Community. |
Capt. Ken Earhart (1983, Microbiology) Reminds Graduates of the Universal Language of Science. |
|
"While the politicians and diplomats sort out how our countries are going to get along, we find that we speak a common language with our colleagues. Armed with science and cultural awareness, we are able to work together. We have the same concerns, improving and protecting the lives and livelihood of our citizens. Through science we foster relationships that would otherwise be difficult or even impossible."
"I enjoy working in the field of global health. Lyman Briggs prepared me so that I could not only do what I enjoy, but do it as a part of the new global system and give back to society. Whatever you like to do, whatever you choose to do, you have the tools to make a difference. It's a global community, and you can and should be a part of it. I challenge you to look beyond your science, to use your science, to make this world a better place for your children and the children of the world."
"To quote from the Biography of Lyman Briggs, 'Briggs should always be remembered as one of the great figures in Washington during the first half of the century, when the federal government was slowly [and stumblingly] groping towards a realization of the important role that science must play in the full future development of human society.'"

Imari Patel Speaks on Behalf of the Graduating Class of 2009 |
|
"There are many different things that each of us will take away from our experiences at Lyman Briggs and there are many different fields that we are waiting to conquer when we move on to the next step. The important thing is that we each take pride in the work we do, take the time to enlighten others, and of course, continue to bleed green through and through. There is a quote by Thomas Edison that I would like to share with my fellow graduates. He once said: I have not failed, I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. This will be important when we embark on our journeys into the constantly changing field of science. We must never say that we have failed, even if we have tried 10,000 times. We must keep in mind that we are that much closer to achieving our goals. Congratulations LBC Class of 2009, it has been a pleasure. Go Green!" Full Text of Imari Patel's Student Address >>> |
Nobel Physics Laureate to Speak at Free Seminar: Science & Liberal Education, on the 50th Anniversary of C.P. Snow's Lecture |
|
Date: May 28 - 30, 2009
Place: Kellogg Center, MSU
Nobel Prize in Physics laureate, Leon Lederman is one of many speakers to participate at a seminar hosted by the International Center for the Advancement of Scientific Literacy (ICASL). In May 1959, C.P. Snow delivered his famous Rede Lecture at Cambridge University lamenting the cultural divide between the sciences and the humanities. On the 50th anniversary of that seminal lecture, scientists and scholars, including LBC's own Professor Robert Pennock, will gather to consider the state of their mutual relations. How far have we come towards the promise of a third culture? What remains to be done?
Lyman Briggs College is proud to be a sponsor for this event. You can visit the conference web site at: Snow Conference |
