The end of the semester is just around the corner. Graduation is almost upon us and our seniors are preparing to leave East Lansing for careers and/or continuing education. This has been an exceptional year for Briggs students as evidenced by the many articles in this newsletter and on the LBC Alumni Online Community.
LBC 2009 Spring Commencements will be our first celebration as a new college. Our commencement speaker will be Captain Kenneth Earhart, a 1983 LBS, Biology graduate and Commander of the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3) in Cairo, Egypt. View the press release on Capt. Earhart >>

Meet Caitlin Brecklin: She's Animated About Science |

Caitlin Brecklin is a freshman studying astrophysics in Lyman Briggs College at Michigan State University. While in calculus class she met Ariel Silverstein, a MSU freshman in Media Arts and Technology, and together they are learning about how the integration of their two disciplines can animate their learning and strengthen their passion as women in science. They both discovered that computer animation is giving new life to their understanding of how culture and science merge.

LBC zoology junior Julia Smith, was awarded a scholarship from the Michigan Environmental Laboratory Association. Smith received the Bryce McHale Memorial Scholarship award that was established in honor of a former MELA member. This annual scholarship benefits an outstanding undergraduate student at MSU who is entering his/her junior or senior year, with a concentration in science and a demonstrated interest in a field of study that would benefit MELA member industries. more >>> |
LBC Awarded $600,000 in NSF Scholarships |

 LBC Professor Ryan Sweeder announced that LBC has been awarded a $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Scholarships for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Program. Briggs will work with the MSU Office of Financial Aid to administer 3 year scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $9,000 to LBC majors. Recipients will also be required to participate in regularly scheduled activities providing a wide-ranging introduction to opportunities in science. These will include the participation of Briggs alumni through seminars, mentoring and internship opportunities. Since 2000, Michigan researchers brought more than $1.3 billion in NSF Funding into the state. MSUToday Story >>> |
Evan Pratt Awarded Research Fellowship |

 Evan Pratt, a LBC Biochemistry senior has won grant funding from the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) 2009 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program. The goal of the SURF program is to provide opportunities for students to pursue meaningful research in plant biology early in their college years. The program targets students who have just completed the sophomore year of their undergraduate studies. Pratt won for the project entitled Characterization of Novel Chloroplast Transporter in the C4 Plant Maize. The SURF award includes $3,000 undergraduate student summer research funds, a one-year student membership to ASPB, and $575 for student travel to Plant Biology 2010 in Montreal, Canada. A $500 mentor stipend is also awarded. All SURF mentors must be members of ASPB. Pratt will be mentored by Susanne Hoffman-Benning (Michigan State University) during his SURF research project. In a nationwide initiative to grow our Go Green Spirit, the MSU Alumni Association has announced the "We Dare You" campaign.
A MSUAA membership is one of the best ways for Spartans to demonstrate their spirit and pride. It is also a unique opportunity for Briggsies to show support for Lyman Briggs College and the Lyman Briggs Alumni Association (LBAA). The return of college status makes it simpler for you to designate Lyman Briggs as your constituent college.
A portion of your MSUAA dues goes to the LBAA to support Briggs programs and activities.
