Two Briggs Faculty Members Honored by MSU with Teaching Awards |

Professor Aaron McCright has received MSU's Teacher-Scholar Award - presented to those who have earned the respect of students and colleagues for their devotion and skill in teaching. He was cited for his dedication to helping natural science students appreciate the social context of their chosen disciplines and his nationally recognized scholarship on the sociology of science. The award provides recognition to the best teachers who have served at MSU for seven years or less. Dr. McCright is the sixth LBC faculty member to receive this award since it was first given in 1969, and the fifth LBC faculty member since 2000. View full text of award >>

Professor Jim Smith's Research on Evolution Gains International Attention |
|
As the world celebrates the bicentennial of the birth of Charles Darwin, Professor Jim Smith is using his research with fruit flies to further the understanding of the impact evolution has on Speciation Cascades. Students know Professor Jim Smith's long research fascination with fruit flies. Smith is a member of a group of researchers who have found that biodiversity feeds on itself - evolving animals open riches for other new species. As Smith and his colleagues have reported, "A new species of fruit fly has evolved after changing its mating behavior to favor laying eggs on apples instead of its characteristic hawthorn tree fruit host. As these flies became genetically different from the parent hawthorn fly, so did the parasitic wasps that prey on the flies' larvae."
The research team led by principal investigator Jeff Feder is published as a part of the cover story in the Feb. 6 issue of Science magazine, a top industry publication published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The study has received national attention and publication.

Meet Megan Fidler: A LBC Learning Assistant Who Discovered a Passion for Teaching Science |
|

Science wasn't always a passion for even an interest for Megan Fidler, a MSU senior from West Bloomfield, Michigan. That is until she became an undergraduate Learning Assistant at Lyman Briggs College. It was at Briggs that Megan discovered a love for science and teaching that has provided her with a feeling of accomplishment that she always strives for. That's because Briggs provides undergraduate students with the unique opportunity to become Learning Assistants (LA).
Megan explains, "One of my Learning Assistants from LBC 144, Organismal Biology, encouraged me to apply for an LA position. Working for Lyman Briggs as an LA has been a very unique and valuable experience for me."
