Issue: #7 August/2008
Greetings!

Homecoming is October 4th, as the MSU Spartans take on the Iowa Hawkeyes.  If you are able to visit campus please visit the Briggs tailgate tent.  We will not be in the College of Natural Science tent this year, but will have our tent located in the same general area (Jenison Field House).  You will find us by looking for the LBC flag.  Stop by and receive a free souvenir version of the flag.  More homecoming information

We are proud to have 2 LBC students on this year's Homecoming Court, Jessica Odgen and Stephanie Dawes.  Stephanie, a current Bailey Scholar, is also one of MSU's nominees for both Rhodes and Marshall Scholarships!  Go Briggsies!

Announcing A Fund Drive To Name a Biology Lab in Honor of Dr. Howard Hagerman & Dr. Mimi Sayed
For over 30 years, Drs. Hagerman and Sayed dedicated themselves to connecting Briggs students to success. Now, an effort is underway to thank them by naming a biology lab (Room C-3) in their honor.

Dr, Howard HagermanDr. Howard Hagerman is one of the pioneer faculty members.  He established the biology program in a nurturing setting that provided a unique combination of formal and informal learning opportunities that have come to characterize the Briggs experience. Dr. Hagerman's students remember him for the cooperative atmosphere that provided them with a stimulating educational experience.  Dr. & Mrs. Hagerman live in the Lansing Area and continue to visit the College.

Dr. Mimi SayedAlthough Dr. Mimi Sayed did not begin her career at Briggs until 1973, as a woman scientist and first female faculty member, she is a pioneer in her own right. Dr. Sayed worked closely with many Teaching Assistants in the biology labs. She found that the laboratories were the perfect avenue for maintaining close relations with students and supporting an interactive community living experience.  She promoted women's issues in science through her work in the American Association for Women in Science and other organizations.  Dr. Sayed continues to stay active in civic and professional activities and lives in the Metropolitan Detroit Area.

An Invitation to Support A New Scholarship Fund In Honor Of Dr. Frederic Dutton
DuttonScholarships!  They are important to students and critical to the success of Lyman Briggs College.  Whether they are used to assist students with financial need, or as a way of recruiting academically talented students, scholarships are  important.

With a goal of $100,000, gifts to this fund will create an endowment that will perpetually award a scholarship of $5,000 per year (depending on rate of return).  Gifts can be paid over a 5-year period.  Scholarship awards will begin when the endowment reaches a minimum funding of $30,000 and will increase as the endowment becomes fully funded. A plaque recognizing donors will be placed in the College. Donors will also receive a yearly correspondence from scholarship recipients.

This is an affordable way to do something Big for Briggs and help students in need.
