Greetings!

Welcome to the first edition of the Lyman Briggs College newsletter.  We hope that you will enjoy reading these periodic updates about Briggs alumni, College news and special events.

This newsletter is a creation of the new office of Development & Alumni Relations and is a part of our commitment to building our Briggs community.

Your active participation is encouraged. We love hearing from our alumni and friends.  Send your comments, stories, news and pictures to mckean@msu.edu. We would also appreciate your help in finding other alumni and friends of Briggs - those who lived in Holmes Hall, or were Briggs students that did not graduate from Briggs.

LBC Professor Honored with
Teacher-Scholar Award
Gerd KortemeyerProfessor Gerd Kortemeyer received the Teacher-Scholar Award from President Lou Anna K. Simon at the president's State of the University address.  Professor Kortemeyer was honored for his deep commitment to supporting his students' learning and to creating technologies that will help all students learn more effectively.  Dr. Kortemeyer integrates his teaching with this research on the effectiveness of online learning tools through his work on the Learning Online Network with Computer-Assisted Personalized Approach, better know as LON-CAPA.  Dr. Kortemeyer's students have been known to undertake informal evening experiments in the Holmes Hall elevator to resolve questions about gravity and acceleration that were deliberately left open at the end of the lecture.

Spotlight on LBC Students
LBC boatBriyana Domjahn (junior, biology) is also co-chair of a student-run, social action theater group called Every 3 Minutes.  Members of this organization use skits to get the message out to campus groups about the prevention of rape and sexual assault.  The skits provide answers to questions and resources to help students learn about how to deal with the issue of rape.

Stephanie Dawes (junior, biology) has been selected as a finalist for a Truman Scholarship.  After completing her studies at MSU, Stephanie plans to pursue a MD and specialize in providing medical care to under served and impoverished communities.  A resident of Cincinnati Ohio, she is a Bailey Scholar, founder of the FUSE Foundation - Kenyan Student Sponsorship, captain of the MSU's Ultimate Frisbee Club, member of Student Sustainability Coalition, volunteer for homeless shelters and low-income health centers.
