Greetings!
Mystery Writer Gleans from Fertile Ground
When Chelsea Cain was a little girl she dreamed that someday she would grow up to be - you guessed it - a firedog. That's right. A Dalmatian racing off to burning houses on the back of a firetruck. If you think that is a strange beginning for a New York Times best-selling author, think again. It reveals something about how her imagination was nurtured. Her parents were commune hippies who wouldn't think of quashing a young girl's dreams by telling her she could not grow up to be a dog. And we won't even go into her tenure as the neighborhood pet undertaker. But fast-forward a couple of decades or so and the woman once known in the hippie commune as Snowbird, authored a debut novel that was voted by National Public Radio listeners as one of the top 100 thriller novels of all time. Chelsea Cain is now the author of nine books and gets reviewers to say things like this: "Popular entertainment - the kind that mixes crime, horror, and even a little comedy - just doesn't get much better than this." She is our luncheon speaker on October 6.
October Luncheon
Thurs., October 1
11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Portland City Grill 111 SW 5th Ave. 30th Floor/Jefferson Room

Register here before October 3 to secure your seat! (Lunch, $25 Members, $35 Guests; Beverage Service Only, $10 Members, $15 Guests) After October 3, only Beverage Service is available, first come first serve.

President's Letter September 2011
I have a small group of business owners and entrepreneurs I meet with each week on Thursday mornings. We began as a book club several years ago. We planned to read books we thought would help our strengthen our business skills. The group has called ourselves WhyB for quite some time (stands for What's Holding You Back). WhyB has changed over the years both in membership and in focus. Each of us has an opportunity to bring issues or concerns to the table and ask for ideas or assistance from the other members, we utilize what we have learned over time through our reading to check in each week, and we provide accountability for each other as well as being a sounding board.
One action we have carried through from the beginning is a shared reading experience; we have read many very good professional and inspirational books over the years. Currently we are reading Drive by Daniel Pink. What an excellent book it has been to share with each other! I have so appreciated the documentation and research he provides for each individual's need for Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose in our work and lives. You can follow this link and find an excellent TED talk by Daniel Pink: Dan Pink on the surprising science of motivation.
I would encourage each of you to consider finding a circle of like-minded entrepreneurs or business people with whom to share your thoughts, challenges, and ideas. I have found reading this thought provoking book with my WhyB colleagues has sparked a lot of creativity in both my business and my personal life.
I hope each of you has the support and accountability you need for a successful and creative fall season in your life and in your work.

Portlandia Really
Does Make
a Difference!
I recently received the following plea for help from a newly employed client of Dress for Success:
"I have a question. Is there any place that could help me?
I need to take my final exam for the State of Oregon, Insurance Dept. before I can actually start employment. The company has already hired me; I just need to take the test for my insurance license.
I have already passed the pre-requisite tests. The cost for that test is $45.00. And then I will also need to be fingerprinted. I don't have a penny to my name. Do you know or any organization that might be able to help?"
I was happy to be able to say, "Yes, I know someone who can help." Portlandia paid for Debbie's insurance exam -- she passed her test on September 8 -- and for her fingerprinting. She is now all ready to start her job. She will attend her first Professional Women's Group meeting at Dress for Success Oregon on September 24.
Thank you to everyone who supports our monthly raffle, either by providing gifts or buying raffle tickets. Your participation helps disadvantaged women move toward self-sufficiency.

Meaningful Mentorship
At Portlandia's June 23 mentor/mentee workshop the attendees completed a survey about their mentorship experience.
Below are a few of the comments. I appreciate my mentee the most for her: · perspective on life · willingness to do whatever it takes to keep picking herself up · openness · willingness to learn · her ability to laugh and smile no matter what For more information about the mentorship program, contact Pamela Mason at pamela.mason@comcast.net.
