Greetings!
Start your year right! Bring a friend & join us for our first luncheon of 2011 on January 6, featuring speaker Kate Haslach, author of Fat Chicks Float Well.

| Kate's book is a frank and inspiring chronicle of personal experience and personal growth, offering comfort, encouragement and perspective to fellow travelers on their own journey toward acceptance, fulfillment, and joy. |
On Swimming, Self-Image and Self-Acceptance - January Speaker Tells All
"I'm accepting the journey called life with open arms and an open heart. That's the ultimate gift of buoyancy."
So writes, Kate Haslach, author of Fat Chicks Float Well, who is our January speaker.
Her book is a story of a girl who grew up in an affluent Portland neighborhood, but in dysfunctional surroundings and a dysfunctional self image.
Things started to change when she moved to San Francisco to pursue her dream of swimming the English Cannel. As she worked on her goal, a transformation took place in her psyche. She began to view her weight not as a burden as a gift of buoyancy.
As one reviewer wrote, "Kate's book is a frank and inspiring chronicle of personal experience and personal growth, offering comfort, encouragement and perspective to fellow travelers on their own journey toward acceptance, fulfillment, and joy."
Register here before December 29 to secure your seat! ($25 for members / $35 for guests)

President's Letter December 2010
It's hard to believe this is the last letter I'm writing for the newsletter, but I'm ready to turn the baton over to Marilyn and enjoy the reading vs. the writing. It has been tricky for me to come up with words some months!
The holiday season is for sharing time with family and friends but also giving time and resources to complete strangers who otherwise would feel very lonely. This is my favorite part of the season; knowing a child will get a toy or a homeless person some warm gloves and a coat. To me, this is the spirit of the season and a way to give back to the less fortunate in our community.
When my parents divorced, I was fourteen. My mother went back to teaching but could only get work as a substitute teacher, so we really struggled financially. I remember our first Christmas without my dad or his financial support. We ate whatever the Food Bank gave us, which made for some interesting meals. There were no presents expected, but the members of our church made sure my three sisters and I didn't go without some.
The generosity of people we didn't know very well made a profound impression on me and it was the spark to the start of my annual tradition of giving to strangers. I will be spending time with family in Washington this year, and I'm sure we'll have lots of laughter and fun. But the smile I'll be wearing will be more from the elf work I did to charities.
My hope is for you all to have a wonderful holiday season with your friends and family. How about sharing some of your time or resources too?
Edrie Bizak
President 2010
