President's Letter
I am so excited about our new cookbook fundraiser and the two international organizations we'll be able to support with the proceeds - Itafari and World Pulse! As a child, I lived on the island of Guam and had the privilege of trying very unique foods. There isn't a food I don't like (well, eggplant) and I love cooking, especially native Guamanian, Filipino, Thai and Hawaiian dishes. I've already entered one of my Filipino recipes in our cookbook called Chicken Adobo, and I will be entering lots more! And, if you're attending the members only picnic this coming weekend at Oaks Park, you'll have a chance to try out the Chicken Adobo. I know so many of you are also great cooks and I'm excited to have your recipes to try. If you haven't had a chance to enter some recipes yet, go to www.typensave.com Enter your name under Contributor - the Group Login is Portlandia and the password is fundraiser. It's super easy to enter your recipes, but the deadline is September 20th! We would love to see as many international recipes as possible, especially since we'll be supporting Itafari and World Pulse. For those that missed Victoria Trabosh, founder of Itafari, speak at our February luncheon, or Jensine Larson speak at our July luncheon, you will be amazed by the work they do supporting women internationally. Itafari helps Rwandan women rebuild their lives following horrific genocide, one brick at a time. World Pulse gives women a voice in all parts of the world, through mass media, telecom and the web. Together, yet separately, these two organizations are giving hope and a way to be heard for millions of women that have never had either. I am so delighted to be a part in support of their missions. Please start getting the recipes you'd like to share together - and get them entered! Let's Connect, Collaborate, Contribute - and Cook!

Luncheon Speaker
In My Fair Lady, Henry Higgins asks, "Why can't a woman be more like a man?" In 21st Century America, we are asking, "How can women be a more successful business owners?" Our September speaker, Monique Hayward, explains that women do business differently than men. Her book, Divas Doing Business: What the guidebooks don't tell you about being a women entrepreneur gives you the female spin how to make it - and thrive --in your own business. Hayward arms you with the tools and the inspiration to tackle the obstacles that trip up entrepreneurs as they try to build their dream businesses. She has first-hand experience, as past CEO of Dessert Noir Café and Bar and senior marketing manager at Intel Corp. in Hillsboro. She will join us with her wisdom - and books to buy - on September 2.

At long last, Portlandia will be publishing it's first cookbook! The purpose is to raise money for our annual Charitable Giving Fund. We plan to add two international charities, serving women & children, to our list of recipients: Itafari Foundation & World Pulse.
We ask that you go to www.typensave.com, login: portlandia, password: fundraiser and use the easy template to insert your favorite recipes. We will have the books available for purchase by our Nov 4th luncheon, in time for your holiday giving!
Itafari's founder is our own Portlandia member, Victoria Trabosh. World Pulse's founder & publisher is Jensine Larsen, our July luncheon speaker. To learn more about these organizations, go to www.itafari.com & www.worldpulse.com
