President's Message

FlowerNetworking is like gardening. If you have patience, attention and a little tender loving care, you will receive a bountiful harvest. I've been in several organizations over the past few years and I always found it interesting when members left because they weren't getting what they wanted. I often wondered if they had actually made their request known to the leadership or the other members. Or did they just silently slip away only to find the same limitations in the next organization.

Networking takes patience. You never know when someone you meet today is going to call tomorrow, next week or next year. You never know when someone passes on your business card to a friend when that friend will get around to calling. But they do. When you least expect it.

Networking takes paying attention. It is beneficial to pay attention and remember details. Someone needing a referral for a new dentist, great restaurant or a super bargain is going to remember you for a long time if you connect them with what they are looking for. Acknowledging a birthday or anniversary is a great way to pay attention and stay connected. (Email me for a chance to win a Borders gift card!)

Networking takes persistence. It takes a willingness to show up again and again. Name recognition is good but meeting people in the flesh goes a long way to building relationships.

Networking starts with planting a seed, nurturing it, and giving it TLC and brings wonderful rewards. Happy Harvesting!

Warm regards,

Christine Green
Portlandia President

October Speaker

The Plot Thickens:  Hollywood Screenwriter Tells Her Story

Cynthia Whitcomb plotted her way into a Hollywood writing career from a most improbable background.  But why spoil the story here. She'll tell all at the Portlandia luncheon on Thursday, October 1.

The Portland writer has sold more than 70 film and TV screenplays, some 30 of which have been produced on primetime national television.  She has been nominated for the Emmy, Cable, Ace, Writers Guild of American and Edgar Allan Poe awards.  She has written for stars such as Ellen Burstyn, Kevin Spacey, Angelica Huston, Jason Robards and Martin Sheen.

She has written plays for Portland Center Stage, as well as two books on writing and selling screenplays and teaches screenwriting classes.  She is currently president of Willamette Writers and is on the Oregon film board.

Mentors and mentees have raved about two workshops called Building More Satisfying Relationships by Barbara MacKay, founder and owner of North Star Facilitators. Everyone who attended wanted MORE TIME.  Barbara is back to present a longer workshop to help us hone our skills.

This workshop is open to Portlandia mentors, mentees, and members (you don't have to be a current mentor to attend).

The workshop is Saturday, Oct. 24, 1:30 - 5 p.m. at Dress for Success Oregon, 1532 NE 37th, Portland, OR 97232.

The room seats only 40. So it's important that you reserve your place in the workshop by October 15 with Kathie@timeforsuccess.net or phone Kathie England at 503-531-9466.

You Can Change a Woman's Life

What if just nine of us took nine minutes a week to change the lives of nine women?

Nine.  That's how many eager women from the Dress for Success Professional Women's Group raised their hands asking for a mentor at a recent mentee orientation session.

As those who participate in the Better Together mentor program have discovered, you can have a significant impact on a mentee's life by simply having a monthly phone conversation with her for, say, 36 minutes.  Can you spare the time?  Think of how easy it can be to build confidence, self-esteem and success in another woman.  Contact Kathie England: Kathie@TimeForSuccess.net

                       Are You LinkedIn?

One way to stay connected with other Portlandia members is through the social media site, LinkedIn.  Portlandia Club has a group there.  Once you have created a profile for yourself on LinkedIn ( free), you can join the Portlandia Club's group.
