President's Message

Gardening is my favorite activity this time of year. I find joy in carefully putting seeds into the ground and nurturing the soil and the seedlings as they emerge.  It's often a test of my patience as I watch the new plants blossom and grow. It's a process that can't be rushed. I know that as I feed the soil and take care of the seedlings they will produce abundant results.

The same is true of relationships. Like the flowers in my garden, they have to be fed, nurtured and cared for. The aspect I love about Portlandia is the opportunity we have to nurture our relationships and watch them grow. The fact that some of our founding members from 1987 continue to renew their memberships speaks highly for this organization.

We have a great social committee that has incorporated member's suggestions into our social calendar and has scheduled some exciting activities for us this year.  We will meet for a relaxing evening of wine, dinner and conversation at Marakesh restaurant later this month. A fun night of bowling is scheduled in   July and September is our martini social. September is also the weekend of our awesome beach retreat-a great time to connect, relax and enjoy each other's company.

I invite you to take advantage of the many opportunities Portlandia offers to nurture and foster wonderful connections with other dynamic women. Happy Blossoming!

Warm regards,
Christine Green
Portlandia President

Mentor Moment

Change a Life In 30 Minutes A Week
- Yours And Someone Else's

You can reduce your carbon footprint and help a mentee take a step forward. And it won't take much of your time.

The Better Together Mentor Program invites you to our first monthly Mentor Phone Forum for present, past, and future mentors.  It's a facilitated phone conversation to introduce mentors to the benefits of mentoring by telephone.

Several mentors have already been using the phone as their primary "meeting place" with their mentees.  They are enthusiastic about this effective and efficient way to communicate.

"I'm a big advocate of face-to-face contact, so I was a bit skeptical when my new mentee suggested meeting by phone.  After one phone meeting, I was sold. We accomplished so much in 20 minutes, I was astounded," said Janis Collins.

Mentee Kathie Fullmer says she has benefited from her nearly 3-year relationship with her mentor Kathie England - almost entirely by phone. Through that relationship she says she has gained self-confidence and lost more than 80 pounds. "Having a mentor has been a great blessing to me in my life. It has given me a friend who is willing to listen, assist, and hold me accountable to the changes I want to make in my life."

The Phone Forum will be facilitated by Kathie England, Mentor Co-Chair, Professional Organizer and Coach on May 15 12:15 - 1:00 p.m.

To participate, email Kathie for the dial-in code:

Membership Multiplication

The Portlandia Board Of Directors has specified 2009 as the year to double our membership.  The PR committee, lead by Joan Riley & Kim Megorden, will be representing Portlandia at the ewomensNetwork event, May 12th, at the Govenor Hotel. If you know women who will be attending but are not yet members, please tell them to drop by our booth!

The Friendliest Club In Town!

 Greeters Needed

Making members and guests feel welcome is important in any organization and Portlandia Club gets high marks in this area!  Many thanks to Donna Milne, Pam Mason, Marilyn Mays and all the Board members who step up at each meeting to do this important task!

As chair of the Greeters committee, I'd love to have 3 more women who would be open to helping with this.  My ultimate goal is to have enough women so that each person only needs to do this several times a year.  This is a great way to be involved in your club without needing to do lots of prep or come to extra meetings!  And, it's fun!!

If you want additional info or can help, please email Gloria Nussbaum at  real2reel@teleport.com    See you at the Club!

Scoops for Scholarships...A Walk in the Park

Calling all scoopers, come join the fun at
George Rogers Park on June 26th, 27th and 28th.
We'll have our ice cream booth at the Lake Oswego
Festival of the Arts for all three days, Friday through Sunday.
All proceeds go to our scholarship funds.

There's art, crafts,
music, food, drink and, hopefully, a whole lot of
sunshine.  This is the most fun you can have
while still working and making a difference!
Scoops for Scholarships is fast becoming a
Portlandia tradition.
Sign-up to work a shift in the booth and help us
make this the best year, so far.  Friends and
family are welcome to work too. So, we
encourage you to bring your own team of
scoopers, cashiers, hawkers with you and
make a working party of it.
There'll be a sign-up sheet at the May and June
luncheons or you can contact Kay Herr at
kay@baskets-extra.com.
