President's Message

In addition to providing a forum to get to know other amazing women and helping each other build our businesses, Portlandia is dedicated to being a philanthropic organization. Derived from the Ancient Greek, meaning "to love people," philanthropy is the act of contributing money, goods, services and time to support a socially beneficial cause.

Each year we make contributions to several organizations that are in alignment with benefiting women and children and also those that provide educational opportunities. In February, Portlandia contributed $1250 to the Dress for Success Oregon for their general fund.  Dress for Success is dedicated to assisting disadvantaged women in preparing for job interviews, with help writing resumes, interview training and  providing professional business attire.

At the April luncheon we presented Dress for Success with a check for $2500 for their scholarship fund to assist women in achieving their educational goals. At our May luncheon we will present scholarship checks to both Portland Community College and Oregon Tradeswomen.

What an awesome opportunity to offer assistance to women who have an educational goal that will support them in taking care of themselves and their children. These scholarships are just one way that Portlandia gives back to the community. Thanks for being part of this dynamic outreach!

Warm regards,
Christine Green
President

May Speaker Promises to be Inspirational
**Special Luncheon for Mentees

Mentors, please invite your mentee to be our luncheon guest to hear a dynamic and inspirational woman, Jean Meeks, on Thursday, May 7, 11:30 a.m. at the Multnomah Athletic Club.  When her husband passed away, she found herself struggling to raise her five children and run a business on her own.

Jean succeeded in a male-dominated consulting business while parenting her children and obtaining graduate degrees.  She is now a part-time professor at the University of Oregon and runs a full-time consulting business, positive eye consulting.  Two of her current clients are NASA and OHSU.  The core of her success is helping businesses make a profit by remembering that people are the essence of their organization.

**Mentees must RSVP to Pam Mason at pamela.mason@comcast.net by Friday, May 1.

Luncheon menu: Thai Chicken Salad with Napa cabbage, fresh mint, peapods, carrots, cucumber, red bell peppers, fresh basil, cardamon, ginger vinegarette & grilled chicken breast.  Dessert: Key Lime tart w/berry sauce!

Mentor Moment

Join the Resource Team and Help the Mentorship Program

I know.  You'd love to become a mentor, but you really don't have time right now.  We understand.  But you can still make the program stronger.

What you lack in time, you have in experience, expertise and passion.

The mentoring committee would like you to share what you know.  The committee has been brainstorming ways to make mentors even more effective than they are now.  Members thought one way to help mentors was to provide them with a resource team so that they could draw on the expertise of others in the club.  You can participate as time allows.  It may just be a quick phone call or email from a mentor with a need for a tip or a reference.  It may be a discussion with a mentee.  It's all up to you.

Please be thinking of what areas of interest and expertise you'd like to share.

Mentor Committee Chair Kathie England will be collecting your lists at Kathie@TimeForSuccess.net
