Feb 19- After Hours
May 19 - New Member Reception
Greetings!

I hope you will join us for our luncheon on March 5. We will be mixing it up with our annual Networking Derby!  It's a lot of fun, so please bring a friend and lots of business cards!
President's Message

February is the Love Month. Advertisers bombard us with ways to express romance, love and affection through giving cards, flowers, clothes, jewelry-all ways to say I Love You.

I read an article that suggested that we look beyond romantic love and extend the loving behavior to others around us. The author suggested making February the month to "Practice Random Acts of Kindness." What a great idea to use the month as an opportunity to perform acts of kindness for others: run an errand, take someone to coffee, deliver dinner, call someone you've been thinking about, offer a ride, babysit, pet-sit, the list is endless!

I invite you to extend the practice to our Portlandia family. What a great way to get to know each other better. Meet someone new and take them to coffee. Bring a guest to the next luncheon. Call someone you haven't seen in a while to check in. Ask how you can support someone in their business.

In our current economic challenge (I am weary of calling it a crisis!), your random act could be a significant boost to a tired-out business professional and a life-line to an overworked woman-on-the-go. Join me this month in sharing the love!

Sincerely,
Rev. Christine Green

March Luncheon/Networking Derby

Get ready for a fast and fun afternoon of speed networking!  The premise is similar to speed dating, but without the angst.  You will have an opportunity to talk about your business and hear from those at your table.  When the buzzer goes off, you will switch tables and have a new audience!

Invite your friends & colleagues and bring plenty of business cards.

A lunch buffet will be served prior to the Derby.  Open networking begins at 11:30 am.
RSVP at www.portlandia.org before 3/2/09.

We greatly appreciate those who can  pay through our secure site. Members must log-in. Contact Jo-Anna for website help: dirking@comcast.net

Mentor Moment

Mentee Orientation Gets Positive Response

Nine women who are interested in being paired with a Portlandia mentor attended the first-ever mentee orientation on Saturday, January 24.

The hour-long, interactive session challenged them to explore how a mentor could impact their lives and what they saw as their responsibilities in a mentor/mentee relationship.

"The mentorship committee thought it was important for potential mentees to approach the relationship knowing that they need to be an active partner.  The orientation was designed to get them involved and thinking about their role," said Kathie England, who taught the session. Kathie said the women were enthusiastic and enjoyed sharing their views with each other.

Two of the questions elicited some interesting responses:

What do you think a mentor is?
Someone in your corner
Someone who assists with your goals
Like a coach
A positive role model
A professional for someone who is just starting out
Someone who will help you figure out who you want to be "when you grow up"
Someone who challenges you in a positive way
Someone for ideas about work issues

What do you think a mentor is NOT?
Someone who spews advice
Your mother or your boss or your spouse
Someone who will resolve all your issues
A counselor or a psychologist
Someone who needs to know ALL your private issues
Someone who will do it for you
Someone who will pay your bills
A shoulder to cry on
A burden to talk with
A know-it-all
A lecturer

Kathie and Mentee coordinator Pam Mason developed the orientation.  The next session is scheduled for March.  Four new mentors are needed to fill our current demand.

Your Expertise is Needed

Do you have a knack for networking?  Maybe you know all the dos and don'ts about job interviewing.  Or maybe you've spent your life pouring over books on nutrition and exercise.
We all have our passions and areas of expertise.
The mentoring committee would like you to share what you know.  The committee has been brainstorming ways to make mentors even more effective than they are now.  Members thought one way to help mentors was for provide them with a resource bank so that they could draw on the expertise of others in the club.
Please be thinking of what areas of interest and expertise you'd like to share.

Mentor Committee Chair Kathie England will be collecting your lists at
