Save the Date!

May 19 - New Member Reception
Greetings!

I hope you will join us for our luncheon on February 5 to hear writer and business consultant, Janna Mock-Lopez. Our business luncheon is a great way to network and connect with other dynamic women in business. See you there!

President's Message

I was first introduced to Portlandia when I attended as the luncheon speaker about three years ago. I was delighted to present to such a dynamic group of women and immediately felt a connection.  I showed up the next month with my registration form in hand. Soon after I became a mentor, then joined the membership team and last year I served on the board as Vice President.

Relationships are often a casualty of living in a fast-paced society.  I am grateful that Portlandia offers not only a place to network, but also a venue to build supportive relationships and to contribute to the community.

I am honored to serve this year as the President of this amazing organization. We have an awesome board of directors and an exciting year ahead. I invite you to participate. Our relationships are not limited to lunch on the first Thursday of the month. Invite a member out to coffee. Visit a member's place of business. Attend the board meeting. Join a committee.  Share your ideas for making this organization a stellar one in the community. Whatever we give out comes back multiplied. Your participation will reap abundant rewards.

This is the year of amazing possibilities. I am thrilled to spend it with you.

Warm regards,

Rev. Christine Green

Please join us on Thursday, February 5 to hear Janna's life journey and lessons.

Mentor Moment

Mentorship Program Retools for the New Year

The New Year will usher in some improvements to the Better Together Mentorship program, which pairs Portlandia members with participants in the Dress for Success Professional Women's Group.

The first-ever orientation program for mentees is scheduled for January.  The interactive group session was developed by mentorship co-chairs Kathie England and Pam Mason.

"The orientation aims to introduce the prospective mentees to the concept of mentoring and help them decide if they would like a mentor and what benefit that relationship could be to them," said Kathie.       "We also ask them to think about what their responsibilities are in that relationship so that they have realistic expectations of how they need to participate in the process in order for it to be successful."

After the orientation is completed, the mentees then decide whether or not they want to fill out an application.

Another change the mentorship committee will consider at its first-quarter meeting in January is developing a "Mentor Resource Bank".  This would simply be a list of resources and expertise members can provide to mentors.  Say, for instance, a mentee needs help with practicing job interviews, her mentor could turn to the Resource Bank to see which Portlandia members would be willing to coach and do mock interviews with her.

Any ideas or feedback to the committee are welcome.

Scholarship Recipient Provides
 February Mentor Moment

Scholarship-winning mentee Cynthia Wellman will provide the mentor moment at the February Portlandia luncheon.

Cynthia says the $500 scholarship to the Oregon College of Art and Craft has given her new hope and inspiration.  She will present three pieces from her "Mud and Crud" class -- works on canvas using clay, paint and organic and man-made "crud." She received an A in the class and has a new career goal.

New Member Welcome!

Sheila Mason joined the Portlandia Club in January, after learning more about the Club from member Pam Mason.  (Although, as Sheila said, "We're both saucy redheads, but aren't related".)  Sheila has been informally mentoring women in the Dress for Success program and would now like to commit further in a formal mentorship program.

Sheila works at Intel as an Engineering Manager in the sort/test area of Intel R&D, where she's been for 11 years now.  She graduated from Colorado State University with her BS in Electrical Engineering.  In her spare time, Sheila enjoys hiking, camping, running, shopping, sewing, crafts and home projects.  Sheila also participates in a Book Club.

Welcome to Portlandia, Sheila!

Member Spotlight
Kathie England

The impetus for starting my business as a professional organizer and time management coach was being laid off from a software company in August 2001, just a few weeks before September 11th.  My biggest obstacle was taking the risk to start my own business and overcoming my self-doubts about being successful.  A serendipitous connection via Portlandia introduced me to professional organizing and I discovered that's what I love.  I am able to combine my skills as a teacher, a speech/language pathologist, and help people discover their own answers to create lasting changes in their lives.

Community Transitional School

It was wonderful to meet Marcia Harris from the Community Transitional School and learn about the amazing job they are doing providing educational needs for the children of homeless families in the Portland metro area.

We are so excited to partner with the school as one of this year's outreach projects.
