President's Message
As we approach the last few months of the year, most of us are finding ourselves with more questions than answers. Who will I vote for? How will I pay for the necessities of life? Will I lose my job? We may have more fears now than ever before, but I think there is also an upside to all of this. No one on the planet is immune to the financial crisis we face. In a sense, it is the "great equalizer". As women, we juggle too many things in our day to waste time wringing our hands, feeling sorry for ourselves. We just don't have that luxury. We are "doers". Being a business owner and sole proprietor, I joined Portlandia Club in 2003, to get myself out of my home office and brainstorm with other women. I think that is more important now, than ever before. I have compiled a list of things that we can do to take advantage of our membership and save some money too. 1. Car pool to club functions.
2. Call a member in a similar business and share your concerns. Share books.
3. Remind each other to vote!
4. Share economical recipes.
5. Donate your unused business clothing to Dress for Success.
6. Shop at consignment stores.
7. Include a single person into your holiday plans.
8. Take your mind off of yourself--volunteer.
9. Vote, conserve, share, and volunteer.
Together we can affect change in the world.
Sincerely,
Judi Jones |

November Luncheon
On November 6th, Portlandia will have it's annual, members only luncheon meeting. This is when we hold elections for incoming board positions, celebrate our accomplishments and acknowledge those who have been exceptional members in 2008. This is a free event, so when you RSVP, you won't need to go any further. The board of directors has been very busy this past year. Programs have been re-tooled, according to the feed back we received from the online survey early in the year. Several new committees have been added and the BOD is very excited to roll them out for you! Each Portlandia member will receive an email ballot. They must be returned to us before Nov 6th. You may also choose to vote in person, at the luncheon, during the check-in. We look forward to you joining us in this annual celebration! Please go to http://www.portlandia.org
to RSVP.
The menu for November's meeting is Caesar Salad and Beef Tips with Mushrooms and Onions..

Mentor Moment
Scholarship Winner Aces Art Class, Turns a Corner
Cynthia Wellman had obviously turned a corner in her life. There was a new spark I hadn't seen before. We'd been in our mentor/mentee partnership for a couple of years and never had I seen her this energized. She had just completed her first piece in an Oregon School of Art and Craft class "Mud and Crud," a course that required students to create works on canvas using clay, paint and organic and man-made "crud." Her instructor had been effusive in her praise of her first-ever attempt at this medium. "She loved the tone and the way the eye flows throughout the whole composition," Cynthia said. Cynthia was taking the class, thanks to winning a $500 Portlandia scholarship.
As she stated in her scholarship application, "I have a plan to obtain a BFA Degree and own my own photography/fine arts studio." Her goal is to combine photography with mixed media. That's why she took the class for credit, a move that required her to complete three pieces with a thematic connection.
Cynthia spent most of her free time during the term conceiving and perfecting the other two pieces, working and reworking them. At the end of the term, she received an A in the class and high praises from her instructor. "I can't turn back and settle for a mediocre life anymore. I want to strive to be the best person I can be. It's time to make my own story, my own dream. I thank Portlandia for giving me this opportunity," says Cynthia.
Stay tuned. Cynthia and her three pieces of "Mud and Crud" will be at the Portlandia meeting in November. Janis Collins

New Member Reception
One of the most popular events each quarter is our New Member Reception. The last one of 2008 will be held on October 28th, 6 pm-8 pm, at the home of Judi Jones. All members are encouraged to join in an informal evening of food and friendship, as we get to know our newest members.
If you are able to attend, please either RSVP on our new website, (using your first name, last initial and the password, Portlandia) or email membership chair, Edrie Bizak at Edrie@TriStarSearch.com . Edrie will confirm your RSVP, along with the address and directions to the event. We look forward to seeing you!

Mastermind Groups Forming
Would you like to join a mastermind group with a group of other wonderful and interesting women? Many women have expressed an interest and I have volunteered to facilitate this process. If you are not sure what a mastermind group is or if you want to join, please take a minute to read this short article I wrote on this topic. It will answer most of your questions.
If you read it and are ready to go, please send me an e-mail by October 6. I will send you back a short questionaire to get the process moving. Feel free to call me if you have any questions. Kaya Singer kaya@awakeningbusiness.com 503-493-1199

Extraordinary Women Wanted!
We currently have 13 committees that account for everything from operations to our social events. Each of them has at least two members or co-chairs and most have small time commitments. As we plan for 2009, there are several positions still open. One is for a new group called "Big Sister". Verena Lewandowski, founding member, is the chair and she would like assistance in pairing new members with long-time members. Our intention is to make new members feel more welcome and to have a special "big sister" to interface with. If you are interested in being an active member of the club, please contact Christine Green at revgreen@sacredheartministries.org She can provide you a complete list of available positions and their descriptions.
