President's Message
I'm sure I'm not the only one who had out -of -town guests this summer but I may be the only one who had 11 cousins from Italy! Six of them stayed at my house, five at my aunt's house close by. As you would expect, plans had been percolating for months to lodge, feed, transport and entertain them. Fortunately, I have a large family in Portland and we worked out a schedule so that the responsibilities would be shared. A dinner was hosted every night, for 12 days, by a different relative. In attendance were anywhere from 26-68 people. Nobody wanted to miss any of the fun! Did I mention that only one of them speaks English? Things went well, despite the fact that the weather was freakish and one cousin was lost on a neighborhood walk the first day. Don't worry, she was taken in by a kindly neighbor, whose step-son just happened to speak a little Italian. Whew! Anyway, the whole visit was full of great life lessons - some that I'd like to share: 1. Communication can include much more than language skills and hand gestures. A certain look or a hand squeeze means the same thing in any language. 2. Plan for every contingency and don't expect anything to go as planned. 3. When it's raining and there's nothing to do, eat. When it's warm & sunny, pick a sightseeing destination that includes a great place to eat. When you're too tired to do one more thing, eat. 4. An afternoon espresso, with the right amount of "crema" is good for your digestion. 5. Your experience will be as good as the attitude you brought to it. 6. Everything is easier (and more fun!) when you have helping hands. I hope that all of you were able to enjoy at least part of your summer with people you care about. I look forward to seeing each of you soon! Sincerely,
Judi Jones |

October Luncheon
Our guest speaker for our October 2nd Luncheon is Gretchen Schauffler. Gretchen was an ordinary woman, stay-at-home suburban mother of two, stepmother to two more, wife to one. However, her approach to a problem that she encountered while working as a color consultant has transformed her in a few years from a suburban housewife to a business woman whose products have national reach. Gretchen is the founder and owner of the high-end Devine Color brand of interior paints that launched in March 2001. Please join us at our luncheon on Thursday, October 2, 2008.
The menu for October's meeting is Spinach salad, Curry Chicken Stanley and dessert.
Check out our new website!!
We are happy to announce the near completion of our new website! Susan Ferguson has been working alongside Yapa Design to work out the kinks. We encourage you to give it a try, especially to RSVP for the monthly luncheon. You can now pay by credit card on this secure site. Yipppeee! We would like to know if you have any trouble navigating, so send us your feedback. Thank you for your patience--we know it took longer than we had first thought it would to get our new site launched.

Mentor Moment
Affiliate Achievement Award
Dress for Success Oregon received some exciting news in July. Each year at the Success Summit, the annual leadership conference for Professional Women's Group (PWG) coordinators and delegates, Dress for Success Worldwide presents the Affiliate Achievement Award. This year, the recipient was Dress for Success Oregon.
This award is presented to a PWG that has provided women with new job retention information, provided leadership opportunities to PWG members, and increased PWG membership. As the winner, DFSO received a $1500 cash gift from Robert Half International.
One of the major reasons DFSO received the award was the success of their mentoring partnership with Portlandia. Being able to pair PWG members with mentors is key in their movement toward self-sufficiency. DFSO is grateful to Portlandia for training and providing mentors and for their on-going support of PWG members who are seeking employment, or working on life skills. PWG members consistently report that having a professional woman as mentor makes a huge difference as they work to reach their goals.
Thank you, Portlandia, for assisting Dress for Success Oregon in receiving the Affiliate Achievement Award. |

Kimberly earned her BS in Business, with an emphasis in Accounting from Portland State University. She's a member of PHRMA, Confrerie and Tasters Guild. Extraordinary Women Wanted!
We currently have 13 committees that account for everything from operations to our social events. Each of them has at least two members or co-chairs and most have small time commitments. As we plan for 2009, there are several positions still open. One is for a new group called "Big Sister". Verena Lewandowski, founding member, is the chair and she would like assistance in pairing new members with long-time members. Our intention is to make new members feel more welcome and to have a special "big sister" to interface with. If you are interested in being an active member of the club, please contact Christine Green at revgreen@sacredheartministries.org She can provide you a complete list of available positions and their descriptions.
