President's Message
As I look through my calendar, I realize that the year is more than half over. If you are like me, that means that there are things I thought I'd have accomplished by now, but haven't and things I am reminded to do before the year is out! This year many of those things revolve around Portlandia. For those of you who don't know, I came to be president by default. The rightful successor had to resign the club due to health issues. I didn't exactly volunteer and I wasn't exactly forced into the job, either. However, it has been one of the most enjoyable experiences I've ever had. I didn't have the opportunity to work my way into this role, so have had to call on all of my accumulated experience and talents, as well as those around me! One of them is knowing which people to put in which seat on the bus. By that I mean running any group or organization takes teamwork. I was extremely lucky having inherited board members and committee chairs who knew what they were doing and to have added a few more. As president, my job has been relatively painless and filled with fun because, I believe, the right people are on the bus. I am bringing this up for two reasons. It is my wish as your president, to leave my office in January, with a complete and capable board. It is also my intention to have committee chairs in place, who are really excited to participate in this way. Secondly, I want to assure all of who might be considering a role, the commitment is small and the fun is huge! It can stretch you in ways you never dreamed possible. I can also tell you that "acquaintances" will become friendships, of the long lasting variety. Portlandia is much more than a place to have lunch once a month. It is really the heartbeat and energy force of powerful women coming together. It takes all of us to make special things happen. Please consider combining your talents with others, to make 2009 our best year ever! Sincerely,
Judi Jones

Mentor Moment
Workshop for Mentors/Mentees Aims to Build Strong Relationships
Would you like to communicate more powerfully in difficult situations? How about learning to treat yourself more compassionately? Could you do a better job setting boundaries and saying "no" respectfully? Would you like to motivate others without using fear, guilt or shame? If you answered yes to any of the questions above, a special workshop for present and past mentors and mentees is just for you. It's called "Building more Satisfying Relationships through Non-violent Communication." Non-violent communication is a term used to describe the process pioneered by international peacemaker, Marshall Rosenberg, Ph.D. The interactive workshop will be taught by Barbara MacKay, founder and owner of North Star Facilitators. MacKay has received extensive training in non-violent communication from Rosenberg. Her firm specializes in facilitation, training and motivational speaking. She is the mother of two teenagers and is passionate about compassionate, respectful communication. The workshop is Saturday, October 11 from 1 - 5 p.m. at Dress for Success Oregon, 1532 N.E. 37th Ave., Portland It's important that you reserve your place in the workshop right now. It's Almost Time for the Beach Trip!
Yoohooo..? Dawdlers..? The annual Portlandia, members only beach trip is September 19-21.
Jo-Anna Dirk and Linda Sirianni have secured a beautiful Victorian style house for us this year that boasts custom amenities and a beachfront location! This Lincoln City jewel sleeps 16, in lovely bedrooms (no hide-a-beds!), with three spacious bathrooms. The weekend starts with appetizers and libations at sunset, followed by girl-talk around the fire. Saturday morning you can sleep in, take a walk on the beach or go shopping in Lincoln City. Saturday evening you will be treated to a gourmet dinner created by Francine Read. That alone would be worth the price of admission! And if that wasn't enough, after your burn-it-off walk on the beach, enjoy a soak in the hot tub before joining a rousing game with some very competitive Portlandians! Or not. Sunday morning includes a breakfast fit for a queen, before you head home with your "oh my gosh, I never knew that about her" stories. The purpose of all of the above is to get to know your fellow members on a more personal level, enjoy some time away from your usual routine and take a deep breath. The alternative, of course, is to miss it. And that would be a shame. To RSVP, call Jo-Anna at 503-522-1921.

Successful New Member Reception!
It has been a regular part of Portlandia to welcome new members to the club with a quarterly party. This quarter, 13 members gathered at the beautiful home of Joan Riley which is located in the heart of Oregon's wine country. More specifically - Newberg! We welcomed our newest member, Beth Freeman, along with newer member's Jean Silver and Kaya Singer. Joan arranged to have neighboring Chehalem Winery host a wine tasting for us. We sampled two reds and two whites, while learning what made them different. We also learned the importance of the correct wine glass shape, as it relates to the enjoyment of each wine. Who knew? We moved from this, to a sumptuous array of hearty appetizers, prepared for us by Cheryl Vick. Cheryl is known for her culinary skills and also for sticking to her commitments. As it turned out, Cheryl had spent several days in extreme discomfort and sleeplessness but still prepared all of the food, as she had promised. (We don't recommend that she or anyone else, take their responsibilities this far!) I am happy to tell you that Cheryl is now on the mend, after being a short-term guest on St. Vincent's surgical floor. Kudos to you, Cheryl! Get well soon! The evening ended with a Round Robin exchange of our "who, what, why's", pertaining to Portlandia. We laughed until we held our sides. The wine helped. I think that I can speak for everyone there, when I say, a good time was had by all! Thanks, Joan! Note: The next NMR will be Tuesday, Oct 28th at Jo-Anna Dirk's.
