President's Message
As a life-long Oregonian, I'm well aware that summer officially begins on July 5th. I am also aware that it marks the speed-up of summer. Zoom, blink--it's over! We're staying pretty close to home this season, only venturing as far as Seattle. I don't have any big projects planned around the house either. I think this will be a hang around, kick-back kind of summer. Whatever you may have planned to do or not do, I hope that it will involve your friends and family. I hope that you will be safe, wear lots of sunscreen and always carry your camera and a bottle of water. Eat whatever you want because you can cover any extra weight with layers of clothing in October. Go ahead and play softball or water-ski, even if you haven't done so in 20 years. Yes, you'll hurt like heck the next day but you'll feel younger while you're doing it! I hope that many of you will plan to attend the August luncheon. By then, you may need some routine back in your life. And we will want to compare tan lines. Sincerely,
Judi Jones

August Luncheon
We are very excited to have Dianne Stefani Ruff, past executive director of the Portland Farmers Market at our luncheon on August 7.
For nine years, first as market manager and more recently as executive director, she's pitched tents at 5:30 a.m. on Saturdays, wangled support from city officials, and played den mother to a large and ranging group of farmers who show up rain or shine to sell food.
Don't miss this opportunity to meet Dianne and hear about her leadership and organizational experiences!

Mentor Moment
Workshop for Mentors/Mentees Aims to Build Strong Relationships
Would you like to communicate more powerfully in difficult situations? How about learning to treat yourself more compassionately? Could you do a better job setting boundaries and saying "no" respectfully? Would you like to motivate others without using fear, guilt or shame? If you answered yes to any of the questions above, a special workshop for present and past mentors and mentees is just for you. It's called "Building more Satisfying Relationships through Non-violent Communication." Non-violent communication is a term used to describe the process pioneered by international peacemaker, Marshall Rosenberg, Ph.D. The interactive workshop will be taught by Barbara MacKay, founder and owner of North Star Facilitators. MacKay has received extensive training in non-violent communication from Rosenberg. Her firm specializes in facilitation, training and motivational speaking. She is the mother of two teenagers and is passionate about compassionate, respectful communication. The workshop is Saturday, October 11 from 1 - 5 p.m. at Dress for Success Oregon, 1532 N.E. 37th Ave., Portland It's important that you reserve your place in the workshop right now. The room seats only 40. RSVP today to Kathie England, Mentor Coordinator: Kathie@TimeForSuccess.net.

July New Member Reception
The third quarter NMR will be Tues, July 29th, from 6pm - 8:30 pm, at the home of Joan Riley. Joan lives in Newberg, surrounded by some of the best Oregon wineries. She is hoping to have a wine tasting for us by one of her well known neighbors, along with delicious, hearty appetizers.
This popular event is a way for longtime members to connect with newer members. The format is casual and the object is to meet, greet and share our stories. If you would like to be part of this fun filled evening in the wine country, RSVP to Edrie Bizak at edrie@tristarsearch.com by July 24th.

Scoops for Scholarships a Huge Success!
It was three days of sunshine, merriment, scooping ice cream and raising money for our scholarship funds. Cheryl Vick brought her husband and band of friends. Marilyn Arthur and Judi Jones brought their husbands. Kathie England brought her partner and JoAnna Dirk brought her daughter. Loads of other Club members showed up to help. We were joined by 12 fabulous volunteers from our mentee community.
Richard Vitaliano (Cheryl's hubbie) and Claudia Knauer did such a terrific job out front, engaging people and reeling them in for a cone, that we sold out of ice cream by 4 pm on Sunday.
The team scooped 57 gallons of ice cream over the 3 days, netting more than $1300 that goes directly to our charitable funds. And, I think it's safe to say everyone had a blast.
A big thank you to the entire volunteer team that came out and worked their buns off.
We're already scheming on how to make this an even bigger success next year. What's certain is you won't want to miss the fun!

Our longtime member, Barbara Harkins, is owner of the AlphaGraphics on SW Market street. For many years they have been Portlandia's printer of choice. Not only do they provide us with printing (often without much notice) but they also have done some beautiful graphic design for us. Most recently, they created a beautiful new brochure for the Club. Barb is also very generous. In April she donated the first 200 brochures! In fact, they were so popular, that we went through most of them by June. We placed our second order recently, fully expecting to pay for them. This time, Barb provided 500, free of charge!
Let's applaud this exceptional member for her generosity and remember to consider her services for your printing needs.

Beach Trip Deadline! We have a beautiful Victorian-style house rented for our annual girl's beach weekend, Sept 19th - Sept 21. It has room for 16 to each have a comfortable bed and - there are plenty of bathrooms, too! There are 6 places left and the deadline for securing a spot is August 15th. That is when we have to pay the rental balance, so there isn't any wiggle room. If you are planning to go (and you shouldn't miss it!) Jo-Anna Dirk needs to have your $100 check in her hands soon!
