President's Message
As the seasons change, so does Portlandia Club. Your board of directors has been working many hours on your behalf, to improve the look, feel and function of the club. I feel very fortunate that they are so dedicated to our purpose. There is an expression that "busy people get things done", and this BOD is an example of that statement in action! I'd like to take this opportunity to catch you up on the changes and encourage you to thank these women when you see them. Several months ago, Christine Green and Edrie Bizak created a new newsletter, with an easier to read format. It takes about ten days to write, edit and implement it into the new template. We would love to have any of you submit articles, as long as they are received by Edrie on the 5th of the month. The newsletter will soon be available on our new website, with a place for archived ones, as well. In February, Susan Ferguson began the process of comparing bids from several web designers to build our new site. In March, she began working with Yappa Designs. Each week, Susan spends 1-2 hours going over our needs and wants and negotiating for us in the often confusing world of technology. We are very close to launching the new site and I think you will be very pleased with what we will be able to do there. Oh, by the way, when Susan volunteered for this job, it was suppose to take 4 weeks to complete. Make sure you acknowledge her for her tremendous efforts. Kay Herr and Virginia Rubin are co-chairing the summer fundraiser for the Mentoring Program, called Scoops for Scholarships (thanks, Cheryl Vick), June 20 through 22. Julie Stoltz coordinated this for us last year and it was a big success and lots of fun. All they had to do was follow the plan, right? Well, not quite. The ice cream company that helped us out last year, with a freezer and ice cream, was not available this year. Many phone calls later and lots of persistence, yielded the needed items. Nothing left to do but get volunteers! We are percolating a new idea for the Annual Fundraiser in October, which raises monies for the Mentorship Program scholarships. Pam Mason and Kathie England will have more on this later. We are all very excited with what we've heard so far! The board understands that although our membership is highly supportive of the Mentorship Program, not everyone can be involved as a mentor. We also know that you are generous women who want to give back to your community. With that in mind, we are creating a new charitable program, with a two year commitment, that everyone can be involved in. Linnea Osterberg will be the point person and we will update you as the details get worked out. I could go on, but I think I'm running out of space and I'll save the rest for next month. I hope you will remember to thank all of your board members and committee chairs for all that they do. They don't expect it, but I bet they'd appreciate it!
Sincerely,
Judi Jones |

Mentor Moment
Can You Help One of These Women Boost Their Career Track? Two more women from the Dress for Success Professional Women's Group would like to have the help and guidance of a mentor. Carisa would like help finding a new part-time job. The 48-year-old mother of three has held management positions with software companies in the past. She has a master's degree in computer science and is looking for a job in research and statistics. Pamela has a background in customer service, sales and purchasing and is looking for work. The 56-year-old would like someone who can help her explore career options, work with difficult people and improve her speaking and listening skills. If you would like to become a mentor to either of these women, please contact Kathie England to learn more: Kathie@TimeForSuccess.net.

Bring Your Business Cards
We have a new business card holder on the way! Please bring 20+ of your business cards to the next luncheon meeting to leave in the new holder. This will allow our members to view all members in one place and grab each other's cards when they'd see a member they'd like to connect with - or for giving to someone as a referral. Please see Edrie Bizak, Membership Committee Chair, with any questions.

Where Does Our Money Go?
Portlandia Club has had a twenty-year tradition of community service, with an emphasis on helping women and children. The Mentorship Program usually has one big fundraiser a year and several smaller, on-going ones. Recently, funds raised in 2007, were distributed to several worthy causes. We thought you'd like to know how you are helping to change lives with your generous contributions of time and money. Dress For Success Oregon was awarded $2000 to be used for scholarships, administered by Pam Mason and Kathie England, through an application process. DFSO also received $1250 for their general fund, to cover items for their clients that need to be purchased, such as undergarments. $2000 was given to Oregon Tradeswomen's Barbara Walters Scholarship Fund and $2500 was donated to PCC's Project Independence, which trains women from welfare to work. We are excited to tell you that we have also decided to adopt an agency for a two-year commitment, with the hopes that subsequent boards will continue this practice. Our first agency will be Community Transitional School. They serve those children who fall through the cracks due to homelessness. Many of these children move with their families as many as 27 times in a year. CTS provides a place for them to go to school, get supplies for free, and have some normalcy in their lives. The needs of this agency are great and varied. Linnea Osterberg is the liason with the school administrators and our club will get a chance to donate clothing, back-packs, school supplies and whatever they have a need for. Linnea will be meeting with CTS soon and coordinating a plan for us. We'll keep you posted! We would like to thank you again for your generous spirits and your continued support.

Each year the Portland Business Journal selects the top 8 women wealth advisors in the city. The criteria is tough and the competition is all top notch. We are proud to announce that long time Portlandia member, Jane Drew, was on that coveted list! Jane is a wealth manager for Smith Barney, in the downtown Portland office. We are so proud of her accomplishments!
