President's Message
It's April and I'm still cold! I keep the heat turned up in the house and add a sweater too. My head tells me to go outside when it's not raining and plant something or clean out my pots. My body tells me to stay inside where it's warm. I walk on a treadmill instead of in the neighborhood. It might rain. Or hail! I feel guilty about being lazy - then I have a talk with myself.
Women need to be more like men. They never feel guilty about spending 4 hours sitting in front of the TV watching a football game. They don't apologize for a whole day spent at the golf course. Not many guys would call home in the middle of a card game, just to see if the kids are OK.
Modern women bring home the bacon and fry it up in the pan! We can keep ten plates spinning in the air, put on our lipstick, all while driving the car. (Don't try this.) What we can't seem to do well is take a break or give ourselves a break. Last month I suggested that we try to be kind to each other and more forgiving. This month, let's try it on ourselves.
Many of us joined Portlandia so that we could meet other like-minded women. I hope that you have. Let's try to play more this year. Call someone you only see at monthly luncheons and invite them to join you at something. Reserve your room for the annual Portlandia beach trip. Don't feel guilty - the sky won't fall.
We have a unique opportunity to expand ourselves through the friendships we make here. Oprah Winfrey said," Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher." There are so many to choose from! So put on a heavy sweater and go meet someone for a hot drink. You won't regret it.
Sincerely,
Judi Jones |

May Luncheon
In keeping with our leadership theme for this year we are pleased to announce that on May 1st our guest speaker will be Karrine Granato from The Howells Group, Inc.
Karrine's presentation is entitled "Cultivating a Powerful Leadership Presence." In the time she has with us, Karrine will work with the group (and some volunteers!) on directly connecting with your authentic speaking voice. The work Karrine does is designed to assist women in presenting themselves confidently, competently and effectively in meetings and large group presentations. Karrine comes to us from The Howells Group, Inc. which works with organizations such as Intel, Tektronix, Nike, and Nordstrom in developing their organizational and individual potentials.
For more information on Karrine or The Howells Group, please see their website at www.thehowellsgroup.com

Mentor Moment A Word of Inspiration for Mentors
What you do is making a big difference, even if your efforts are not immediately apparent.
I'd like to suggest that in everything you do, you keep in mind the miracle of the Chinese bamboo tree. After the seed of this amazing tree is planted, you see nothing, absolutely nothing, for four years except for a tiny shoot coming out of a bulb. During those four years, all the growth is underground in a massive, fibrous root structure that spreads deep and wide in the earth. But then in the fifth year the Chinese bamboo tree grows up to eighty feet!
Many things in life are like the Chinese bamboo tree. You work and you nvest time and effort and you do everything you can possibly do to nurture growth. Sometimes you don't see anything for weeks, months, or even years. But if you're patient and keep working and nurturing, that "fifth year" will come, and you will be astonished at the growth and change you see taking place.
So, to paraphrase one of the greatest leaders of the 20th Century, Winston Churchill, we must "never, never, NEVER give up!"
