Chamber Raves
Rich Stompanato of ARDS, Services, Inc. a Lisle Area Chamber member has assisted District 203, in refurbishing the computers that the district no longer uses. Once the computers are collected supervisors and about a dozen student volunteers spend several weeks sorting, testing, cleaning and refurshbishing. Those computers are then given to families that cannot afford a computer at home for as long as the student remains in the district. Excess computers are sold to the public to raise money for the Naperville Education Foundation. To date, the program has allowed the less fortunate students to receive computers, and has raised $163,000 for the foundation. Organizers estimate another 200 computers will be distributed and $20,000 more will be raised this year. Richard Stompanato owner of ARDS, Services heads the effort with the district and staff members to collect about 750 laptop and desktop computers from 22 buildings. "Logistically it's a huge undertaking, but I'm a small business owner and I believe in giving back to the community" he said. "And being in the technology business, I've seen what technology can do for kids, without working technology in today's world, the ability of our children to succeed is hampered." The remaining units will be sold September 10th, at Mill Street Elementary School, 1300 N. Mill Street. Naperville. The sale runs from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and preorders are being taken online.

President's Corner - Tom Althoff
We are pleased to report that the Lisle Chamber had a very successful summer of activities. Our golf outing had increased numbers and this was followed by our member appreciation picnic on August 11th. We had over 100 attendees at each of these events. There was a lot of interchanging of ideas and referrals. Cruise Nights in downtown Lisle have proved to be very popular and our downtown businesses are reporting good results. We added eight new members during the month of July and ten new members in August. The Navistar coupon distribution has proven to be very beneficial to those of you who participated. We have heard from many members that they are doing business with the new Navistar employees. Our luncheon group, Lisle Executive Network Group, has been growing and attendance has been strong. Thanks goes to Carolyn Wheeler of Prospect Equities for doing a great job in bringing the members together for these networking luncheons. I am hearing some positive stories from some of our members regarding their performance this year. These are all very encouraging signs for the year ahead. You continue to be very supportive of this organization and we truly appreciate your assistance. Thank you to Dick Pond Athletics and Jerry Sellars for a very informative Business After Hours with some great refreshments and special offers. Our two ribbon-cuttings for Contempo Dance and FruitFlowers were well attended. These new members appreciate your welcome to what we hope is a very friendly Chamber that will assist them in marketing their business.
As we move into the fall excitement surrounds our upcoming luncheon and Business Expo which is combined with the Woodridge Chamber. It will be held at the Marriott Hickory Ridge Conference Center a new venue for the Expo which we think will provide for a very pleasant and prosperous event. Please get your applications in soon because space is limited to 60 booths. We continue to work with other Chambers to maximize your exposure to other businesses. In the next few months we hope to have another joint program with the Naperville Chamber as part of this effort. Thank you for your support of the coupon program for Navistar and best wishes for September and have a Happy Labor Day! |

Chairman's Message
If you were one of the over 100 who attended the membership appreciation picnic on August 11 I think you'll agree this was a terrific event! The only noted problem, and what a great problem it is to have, was there were not enough seats. Thanks to all who braved the 80 degree temperature & sunny skies and also to all who helped make this event a complete success. With 14 chamber members providing food, drink, condiments, preparation, cooking and everything else, this was truly a membership appreciation event and we're all grateful for your continued enthusiastic support! We look to providing more of the same in the coming months.
A quick snapshot of upcoming events includes the Women in Business multi-chamber progressive networking event at Seven Bridges on September 15th from 11:30 to 1:30. Young Professionals Network (YPN) is meeting on September 20th at the Lisle/Naperville Hilton from 5:30 to 7:00 pm, the final Cruise Night in Downtown Lisle is scheduled for September 24th, and B Gunther will be hosting an After Hours on September 28th from 5-7 pm. If this isn't enough, many of you are aware of the Lisle Executive Networking Group (LENG) group. Coordinated by Carolyn Wheeler, this group meets the first and third Tuesday for lunch at a different Chamber member's establishments. The forum is very casual and fun, yet it continues to provide invaluable networking opportunities for those who can make it. I want to extend a hearty thank you to Carolyn for doing such a great job coordinating these low pressure high yield lunches! Anyone interested in being included in the communication of the when's and where's, please contact the Chamber office.
Lastly, be sure to reserve your spot for this year's Business Expo scheduled for September 29th at the Marriott Hickory Ridge. We've teamed up with the Woodridge Chamber to double the interest, double the exposure and double the opportunities for your business. This is sure to be another great business opportunity you don't want to miss.
Encouraging you to get the most out of your membership and wishing you a prosperous month.
Dan Garvy
Chairman

Ambassador Spotlight

A new member and an ambassador as of this year, Jason Fair of Merrill Lynch enjoys his role as ambassador for the Chamber because it allows him to connect with the business members of the community while also making him more aware of the great people that are around him. As a Wealth Management Advisor at Merrill Lynch, Jason's 14 years of experience come in hand as the senior member of his team. Jason's primary responsibility is to assist clients in achieving their financial dreams through comprehensive financial planning and investment management.
Jason currently resides in Elburn with his wife and three daughters. In his free time he enjoys bicycling and being active in his church. Last but certainly not least, Jason leaves us with a parting thought: Think about how much time we spend planning a vacation every year. Yet most people spend only a fraction of that time planning for the financial goals that are important to them. With the current volatility in the market, it is time for a second opinion on your portfolio.

Legislative/Government Affairs Update
by KeithTice
Toll Hike Effective January 1, 2012. The increase means tolls will jump from between 35 and 45 cents at a majority of plazas, while most ramp costs will spike anywhere from 15 to 45 cents. The new rates have been put in place to pay for a $12 billion roads program, which includes roughly $8 billion for maintenance and improvement of the 286-mile system and $4 billion for new projects
The extra cash will allow the agency to borrow billions to repave existing roads over the next 15 years and approach some significant new construction. That includes: extending the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway east to the airport and building a western bypass around O'Hare connecting with I-90 and the Tri-State; constructing an interchange at I-57 and the Tri-State; and widening I-90 between Rockford and O'Hare.
Illinois Corporate Income Tax Rate Comparison. Did you know that the current 9.5% corporate rate gives Illinois the 4th highest rate in the United States? And according to the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, corporate income tax rates in the five border states are as follows: Indiana-8.5% (rate is being reduced by 0.5% per year, and will be 6.5% in 2015); Iowa-6% 1st $25,000, 8% next $75,000, 10% next $150,000, 12% over $250,000; Kentucky-4% 1st $50,000, 5% next $50,000, 6% over $100,000; Missouri-6.25%; and Wisconsin-7.9%.
Redistricting Lawsuits. First, it was the Illinois Republicans who filed a federal lawsuit challenging the validity of the state and federal legislative redistricting process overseen by Gov. Pat Quinn and legislative Democrats.
Now it's the League of Women Voters of Illinois who are challenging the Democrats' redistricting on constitutional grounds.
The right to draft gerrymandered political maps is viewed in Illinois as one of the spoils of victory. Democrats hold legislative majorities in the Illinois House and Senate and, historically, that status has given them the legal right to draft state and federal district boundary lines in a way guaranteed to elect the most Democrats.
It'll be a big surprise if either lawsuit enjoys any success. A politicized map-drawing process has been approved by the federal courts, despite numerous challenges. Only in the most egregious circumstances have the federal courts intervened. Some states, most notably Iowa, have a nonpartisan map-drawing process that ensures legislative district lines are drawn without political bias.
This column will keep you informed on further details as they unfold. For any further information that we have available, please e-mail Keith Tice at Envirmark@aol.com
