Boalt Hall Celebrates Second Best Fundraising Year!
Thanks to the generosity and loyalty of the law school community, Boalt Hall celebrated the close of fiscal year 2009 with its second best fundraising year. The $3.8 million pledge by Campaign Cabinet Chair Elizabeth Cabraser '78 to the Boalt Hall Fund helped the dean's discretionary fund reach its highest earnings yet. Among other notable gifts, the law firm of Coblentz, Patch, Duffy & Bass made a $500,000 gift, the largest law firm gift to Boalt, in honor of one of its partners, to establish the Coblentz Civil Rights Endowment Fund. Also, a $1.7 million gift from the estate of John B. Hall established the John B. Hall Public Interest Endowed Scholarship Fund. Support from more than 40 foundations and corporations and cy-pres awards played a significant role in keeping Campaign fundraising on pace, despite the economic slowdown. Boalt Hall will celebrate the philanthropy of its alumni and donors in its annual report, to be published in the fall.
Coming Soon - 2010 Boalt Hall Alumni Directory
Plans are underway for a printed Boalt Hall Alumni
Directory to be published in January 2010. The directory will
contain listings of Boalt Hall graduates and the business and personal
information they elect to provide. Beginning later this month, alumni
will be contacted for their participation. For questions about the
project, please contact Megan Smith, director of Alumni Relations, at
510.642.0612 or mlsmith@law.berkeley.edu. The book will be a valuable tool for finding lost friends, identifying
graduates in various law specialties or locales to whom you want to refer
clients, and just keeping in touch with Boalt.
Expanding Career Services for Alumni and Students

Please note that in order to be considered, candidates must apply online via the above links to the UC Berkeley jobs site. However, in addition to submitting a resume and cover online, please also email your application materials directly to Terrence J. Galligan, assistant dean for career development, at tgalligan@law.berkeley.edu.
Earn CLE! Web
coverage of SCOTUS Environmental Law Decisions
This has been a blockbuster year in the U.S.
Supreme Court for environmental law and policy.
In the term that concluded June 2009, the justices decided five
major environmental cases involving many of the nation's most important
environmental laws. The Center for Law,
Energy & the Environment (CLEE) invites you to watch its webcast assessing the
impact of these recent rulings and the dissonance between the high court and
the Ninth Circuit on environmental law and policy. The webcast and CLE

Remembering Paul Mishkin, Emanuel S. Heller Professor
of Law, Emeritus
Beloved professor Paul Mishkin passed away June 24 of kidney failure. Paul joined Boalt Hall in
1973 and was an expert on the role of the federal courts. In 1996,
Professor Mishkin received Boalt's Rutter Award for Teaching Distinction and
continued to teach a federal courts course at Boalt long after his
retirement. In 2006 dozens of the country's leading scholars and
practitioners of constitutional and federal courts law gathered to honor
Professor Mishkin at a conference devoted to examining his ideas and life's
work. The California Law Review published a symposium issue dedicated to
Professor Mishkin's scholarship. 95 CLR 1193 (2007)

John Burris '73 is the subject of California Lawyer magazine's July cover story. Burris has worked for
over 30 years on police misconduct and civil rights cases, including the 1994 jury award for Los Angeles
police-beating victim Rodney King. He is currently representing the family of Oscar
Grant, who was fatally shot by a BART police officer on New Year's Eve. See the
magazine's full story on Burris here.
John Derrick '02 has been certified as a Specialist in Appellate
Law by The State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization. He is one
of about 240 lawyers in the state with that certification. For the past four
years, he has had a statewide solo practice specializing in appeals. He mostly
handles civil cases, but does some criminal ones, too. His Web site is www.californiaappeals.com. His
wife, Lisa, now flies Citation jets for an aircraft management company. Emily,
14, is starting in high cchool. Michael, 5, is starting in kindergarten.
Michael Posner '75 has been
nominated for Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and
Labor, Department of State. Posner
currently serves as the president of Human Rights First (formerly the Lawyers
Committee for Human Rights) and has been at the forefront of the international
human rights movement for more than 30 years. He has worked to support
human rights defenders in countries as diverse as Russia,
Zimbabwe, Iran, Cuba,
China, Uganda, Haiti,
the Philippines, El Salvador and Egypt. He also has been actively
involved in promoting the rights of refugees and displaced people, and has
taken a leading role in promoting stronger industry standards to ensure fair
labor conditions in global manufacturing supply chains. Before joining Human
Rights First, Posner was a lawyer with Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal in Chicago.
Kim Sayers-Fay '99 writes: In Dec. 2007, my family and I left
California and joined the U.S. Attorney's
Office in Anchorage, Alaska, where my husband and I have long
wanted to live. Happily, it has turned out to be both personally and
professionally rewarding. In October 2008, I won the John Marshall Award for
Trial of Litigation, which is the Department of Justice's highest honor for
trial attorneys. The award was recognition for the successful prostitution of a
violent sex trafficker who had victimized over a dozen women and girls in Anchorage over a several
year period. Since then, my colleague and I obtained the largest restitution
award ever entered against a sex trafficker: over $3 million. Needless to say,
I'm having a ball trying criminal cases in the last frontier.
